Congrats to everyone that raced.. just reading through all of it.

I AM SOOOOOOO PUMPED RIGHT NOW. After having almost 3 months off for my injury and really just starting running pain free again 2 weeks ago. I just PR'd my 5K race time

Previous PR in the fall was 33:13 and today I ran 5K in 29:16. I had no intention of it at all but I got out and caught up in the race enviroment and it all felt good.. no pain in the knee. I checked my pace and backed off a few times making sure I could maintain.. GREAT race... Lots of fun... Also showed me that cross training, spinning, swimming without running can still keep helping you improve. 6 weeks ago I wasn't sure I would run another race....

I know compared to all you AWESOME people it is a small win for me. But reading about everyone here just keeps inspiring me.

AWESOME JOB BRO!!!  and maybe the best part is no knee pain!

thanks John... Not a hint of it.. Not a single sign in the last two weeks. Since my Chiro got my pelvis back in place. It was causing my tracking issues and a VERY weak core on my left side.

Oh and that cobb seat is working well now that I am getting out on rides. I ordered a new one to put on my tri bike and this one is going to my friend that is just getting into triathlons. Thank you soooooo much for introducing me to them. huge Differance on rides.

I always forget to ask...Marla what is "I'm bleeding?Where??"

Just the most frequent conversational exchange that my husband & I have when I come home after a few hours of [something physical]. Goes something like this:

Steve: "Why are you bleeding?"

Me:"I'm bleeding? Where??"

Spanky - I'm thinking I'm going to take a page out of your book.  Trying to stay positive about it all!  You really are an inspiration, so don't sell yourself short!  Getting through an injury is not easy!

So, that being said, I'm backing off running again, and I'm going to make another doctor's appointment (even though it'll have to wait until after exams at this point).  I will ask him specifically again about a PT and possibly even about a chiropractor.  Spanky, I will likely be coming to you for advice along the way!  Playing soccer my entire life has taught me how NOT to stop when I feel pain.  How do you do that, anyway!?

Ryan keeps pushing me to try for the HIM because he thinks my workouts will improve and I'll regret giving it up.  But, I think I'm pretty set on going for the sprint the day before and finding an Oly in August to have fun with.  My workouts the last couple weeks have been awful, and I have to figure out why.  I can't go into a HIM undertrained, and even if I can finish it, I don't want to "just" finish it.  A HIM will wait for a couple years, and then an IM will definitely be put off longer, but that's okay because we don't want kids anyway! (Right, Sam?Plus, hopefully by then we'll be living in Portland, so I can do CdA or Canada!  Those courses are supposed to be awesome!

I do want to apologize to everyone for being such a downer lately (again, I'm going to ask the doctor about this, too.  It's really unusual for me).  My resolution is to try to be MUCH more positive, in the hopes that turns my workouts around, too!  I'm trying!

Also Tara Costa from season 7 of the biggest loser raced and placed 3rd overall for female. We started speaking while looking at the results and I was explaining to her how to read it. I then told her she looked familiar as I thought it was her but didnt want to say anything. She was like "yea I was on a TV show before" I said "yea I remember now, Tara right?" I didnt want to say "hey werent you on the biggest loser?!" especially when she just said "Tv show" lol. I asked her what other races she had planned and she is doing a couple half irons then a full. She is doing KONA!!!! I am happy for her as she has been able to keep the weight off since 2008 and is very active, a lot of the former contestants revert back somewhat but she kept going

Hi,

Just got back from Hervey Bay so haven't had a chance to catch up with everyone else's races yet.

My first Oly went great!!!

The weather was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky and a flat calm ocean swim.

I got a bit lost on the swim, the buoy's seemed very spread out and my navigation wasn't good but I had a good swim and came out feeling fine.

I nearly had a disaster getting on the bike, my tri shorts snagged on the back of the saddle and I'd already got one foot in my shoe when I realised! I came close to falling off but managed a spectacular recovery....

My bike leg started well and I was averaging 36 km/hr on the flat but after a rough section and a steep short hill I lost momentum and never really got back into rhythm.

The run was good, I felt strong and never got passed and had a good run into the finish.

My overall time was 2hrs 51mins which was a bit slower than I was hoping for but I felt good in all 3 sections and got lots of experience.

The winner was a guy called Courtney Atkinson, he's won quite a few ITU races and is a bit of a superstar in the Australian triathlon world; He lapped me just as I was starting the second 20km cycle and I watched him start his run, his pace was unbelievable!!! I think he ran the 10k in 32mins.

Anyway, first Oly completed and I feel I can definitely cut a few minutes off all the legsCool

Congratulations to all the racers this past weekend, it is awesome to see first time Olys and PR's.

I did run a local 5k this weekend, my goal was to beat my PR and get under an 8 min pace and I am happy to report that I did 23:15 = 7:29 pace..... time for a new goal - sub 23 min?  I was thinking about this post when I ran so it did help motivate me to get there....race report in my log.

It was beautiful day to run- I had my eye on a guy in front of me that had lots of tattoos and he was my rabbit. ....we ran past each other a few times....but in the end he ended up a few seconds in front of me.

Everybody have a great week.....

thanks John... Not a hint of it.. Not a single sign in the last two weeks. Since my Chiro got my pelvis back in place. It was causing my tracking issues and a VERY weak core on my left side.

that's encouraging to read, bc my PT's finding the same thing contributing to my recent hip injury. Any particular exercises you've been doing on your own to strengthen your core other than the usual planks & varieties of crunches?

RR is written, in my logs.

My T1 was a bit of a drama! You had to run with the bike up a wet grassy slope to get on the mount area on the road and I put my right foot on top of my shoe and leaped up but couldn't get on the bike, after a few seconds I realised my gusset area on the tri shorts was snagged round the back of the saddle. Somehow I'd already slipped my right foot into my shoe so I had to quickly swing my other leg back round and do some wierd hopping while trying to unhook my shorts.

Gave the officials a laugh!!!

As I finished my bike leg I slipped my feet out of my shoes and put them on top but one shoe jammed into the road due to the camber, any suggestions on avoiding this?Embarassed

No, no, you have to do a real RR so we can all comment : )

And as for your shoes, do you mean while you were pushing your bike or while your feet were on top?

It was tough. I had a hard time when a girl I helped learn to run in the fall signed up for the 10K clinic my work out buddy's sister was going to run. I realized I couldn't do it with her (she is my wife's friend and we run the same pace) That was pretty sad at the time. That was when I was cleared to run but every time I went out I would have a tracking problem with my Patella and would have to shut down my run. Sometimes only 500 meters into the run.

You have to make wise decisions for long term Success. Only a year ago Success for me was doing some scuba diving and eating a bag of nachos at night while watching TV and weighing 279lbs. I DON'T want to revert back to that guy ever again. EVER. The fear of that drove me the most. But also worried me the most. I was confused how a 279lb guy could start running and not have an issue but at 212lbs I couldn't even go 500 meters. It was tough... But I knew any sign of pain was a sign to STOP. I went from mid Jan until 2 weeks ago without doing a non stop run of any kind. I had one day I did 4km walking running.

You have to think Long term and Safety first. You also have to know you CAN keep up your cardio and keep building base and improving through other methods.  I had a lot of great tips and workout ideas from people in this Mentor Group. A lot of Wisdom here to make use of. THANKS TO ALL THAT DID.

To break it down for me

1. PT appointments and inflamation reduction with Ultrasound

2. PT appointments to work on my weakness CORE and breathing to engage my core.

3. Doing my PT workouts and my CORE exercises 3-4 times a week

4. Swimming and spinning. Making sure I hit swimming twice a week for masters. IT only made me a better swimmer too. Finally hit some 2800-3000 meter nights. Learned how to pace myself better in swimming and stroke count went down. (FYI our coach sucks, My friend is teaching me on the side while we are in there, it is just swim time for me) I moved up a lane in swimming too.

5. Having Friends and Family Support me and really put up with me as the weather started to get better and seeing people out running made me frustrated. I also got on my mountain bike and did some rides with my friend building base for her HM in two weeks (was supposed to be my first HM) Oh well I will get it in another time. I also rode the bike on the group runs we orginized in our town. Our town is slow, lazy with high cardiac issues. I also knew we were starting another learn to run clinic and had a goal and an ability to get back running slowly with the group. And really seeing our largest group yet 26 people learning to run 80% of them WAY out of shape and me being able to inspire them on Monday nights... AMAZING SO AMAZING. I never thought I could be an inspiration to people. But it turns out I am. Because I have lost the weight and dedicated myself to a new lifestyle.

So trust me. maybe your race has to wait. But you know what..... It is not going anywhere. IF you can't do it this time around do it next. If you have enough base to complete your HIM without injury and you choose to do it that is up to you. Just to finish would be an amazing thing to me...Your doing more then most people I know do. Keep up the Cross training and don't do anything that will provoke your injury. IF IT HURTS STOP. Do something else.

But don't let me kid you.. I had boardline insane days. And I am sure my family found it hard to deal with. They find my new lifestyle hard to deal with. They would rather go get fast food and talk about how stupid I am then actually do anything to help their health.
