Pre-race routine:

Pre race

I picked up my packet at the race site the day before around 5:30PM and then meet up with some fellow Brooklyn Tri Club members and we headed off to the hotel that we were staying at. After we checked in we met up with some more club members for the pre race dinner. We ate at a pizza place that had the hugest slices I have ever seen so I had to get one!! It was great. After we mad a stop at Rite aid for some last minute supplies (wipes, water, bug repellent, allergy meds) and headed back to the hotel.

Race morning

I had a cliff bar and some water pre race and we loaded up and headed to the race site. We got to the transition area around 5:50 and I started to set up. One of my club members put on my bike stickers since I didn’t know where they went. After setting up my transition area I was about to start putting on my wetsuit and I realized I didn’t put on the body marking tattoos and I didn’t pick up my timing chip. This was about 10 mins before the race start so I ran over to the registration desk and got my chip and had them hand mark my body. When I was leaving the hand marking station I realized I didn’t have my timing chip on me and I started to freak out because I couldn’t see it!! I was like OMG what am I going to do, my heart started racing but after about 30 secs the body marking lady found it and I was ok. Before the swim I had a bottle of accelerade and put on my wet suit and made my way over to the start.

Event warmup:

Foam rolled the night before
Swim
  • 13m 31s
  • 563 meters
  • 02m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was divided into 3 waves men 39 and under, men 40 and over, and then female. I was in wave 1 and the water was actually warmer than the air outside so that was good. Before the race started the race director said they have good lifeguards and that if they feel you are struggling they will take you out the water no matter what you say. I started at the back of my wave since I know I am not a strong swimmer, for the 1st 50 or so yards I was ok then it all went down hill after that! My technique went out the window, I stopped putting my head in the water it was just horrible. I then started to panic when the faster people in the 2nd and 3rd waves caught and passed me. The waves started a minute apart from each other, with the other waves passing me I started to wonder if the lifeguards would take me out the water and I was praying they didn’t. I kind of cheated in the swim because most parts of the lake you can stand up so I stood up a few times with the water about neck high. I finally completed the swim (dead last in my wave) and headed to the transition
What would you do differently?:

Next race I will definitely concentrate more on maintaining my technique through out the swim
Transition 1
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

I had the wetsuit down to my waste before I got to T1, took it off then dried my feet a lil and brushed off some sand. I then threw on socks and my bikes shoes then a shirt. Put on my sunglasses and helmet and ran the bike out of transition. This time included about a 30 second run to the bike start
What would you do differently?:

Just try to be overall faster
Bike
  • 37m 14s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt really good on the bike, made up some ground. My heart rate was in the high 170s initially but it went down to the 160s by the end of the bike. I averaged 18mph for the 12-mile bike and was feeling good. I may have been able to push more but I didn’t know how my body would react yet as I am still learning my limits. At the dismount area I unclipped and I thought I had slowed down enough but ended up slamming my brakes and brought the rear wheel waaaaaay in the air, just glad I didn’t flip over.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

I ran the bike into transition, racked it and took off my helmet. While running with the bike to transition I played with the settings on my watch to turn on the footpod sensor for my run so I could know my pace and distance. In transition I took off my bike shoes and put on my running shoes. I turned on the footpod and tied my laces. I am ordering a lacing system so I can save those seconds tying my shoes. I then took a swig of my accelerade that I had on my bag grabbed my race belt and exited transition.
What would you do differently?:

Xtenex laces so I wont have to tie my shoes and a Garmin later on so I wont have to worry about turning on my footpod on my shoes and watch
Run
  • 22m 25s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I was a little confused at the exit from transition to the run and got a lil off track that cost me maybe 5 to 10 seconds. When I got my bearings together I realize I felt really good coming off the bike but I didn’t want to take off to fast so I settled into a 7:30-7:45 min mile pace for the 1st half of the run. I passed a few people here but not that many. At the turn around I decided to drop the hammer and go all out till for the last half of the run I picked it up to a 6:10-6:15 minute mile pace and started passing plenty of people. This is where most my ground was made up. When I crossed the finish line I had an in between feeling because I felt like I could have ran longer but yet I was spent as soon as I stopped moving.
What would you do differently?:

I would drop the hammer earlier maybe a mile into the race instead of 1.5 miles in 2 people ahead of me in my AG finished withen 35 seconds of my time and I feel I could have mad that up if I pushed the run earlier
Post race
Warm down:

Just relaxed and talked to some of the other competitors Tara from the biggest loser was in this race and she did very good. 3rd overall female and won here AG.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swimming experience.

Event comments:

All in all it was a great race for me. This was my second triathlon and even though the swim was about 250m shorter than my 1st I still beat my time by about 30 mins finishing at 1:18:31. I also achieved my goals of competing the whole time, not coming in last (even though I was 17/20 in my AG), look good out there racing, and be the 1st black guy to cross the finish line (I think I was I saw either 2 or 3 others at the race start and I know I passed one guy on the bike and one on the run maybe I was 2nd lol)

I would like to thank My fellow Brooklyn Tri Club members and the members of the SWBKRUN mentor group on BT for helping me complete this race with all the advice and information.

Andre, what a great race you had!  So happy for you, even with a shorter swim, 30 minutes is a crazy amount of improvement at any distance but especially a sprint!  Way to go!

Andre--what a rockin' bike and run you had.  Simply awesome....and you achieved your goal of NOT being last out of the swim.  Given your dedication you'll nail that swim next time!
