fattyfatfat - 2009-12-30 6:56 PM What's up crew!  I busted out something I never ever dreamed I could do!  After looking at my logs, running "a few" numbers and finally talking to my coach this afternoon, I got the go ahead to drop the hammer on a 1600 this afteroon.  So, for the last full mile of my biggest month (100 miles) of my biggest year (755 miles) ever........... I ran a sub 7 minute mile!  6:51

more details in my log if you're bored.   thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!  Geat job, John.  I guess there's hope for us big guys.

I have to ask though, what numbers did you run before getting permission to run fast?

heck yeah there's hope for us.   times and distances.  time was pretty straight forward but man i was all over the pace calculator today. lol!   distances so i knew how much farther i had to go.  the closest track is to far from the house so i have all kinds of distances mapped from the house.  but i figured i'd need as few distraction's as possible (man was i right about that)  for this so i looked for a mile crossing as few streets as possible that was straight as i could find.  tough to do in suburbia right.  but i had a good idea of where it was going to be and it ended up only crossing on secondary street. once i mapped the route i started picking off landmarks from some imagery i have.  i knew form, or what pathetic form i have, needed to stay together and looking at my watch wasn't going to help.  so this helped, for example, when i hit the end of the lake i knew i was 700m in.  thats pretty much it.

i'm still really pumped, haha can you tell!  so i'm making this out to be more than it really is... but i'm freakin'n pumped man.  what a great day all around!

btw suzy,  arm swing really makes a difference doesnt it.

Took me a while, but here are my 2010 goals:

Qualitative

1. Trust the plan and its author
2. Get the body healthy and keep it that way.  Don't ignore pain for the sake of the workout.
3. Embrace the chaos of OWS.  Stand your ground.

Quantitative
1. Finish IM WI. Have the guts to sign up again.
2. Break 2:00/100 yards in swimming
3. Finish a HIM in less than 5:45

SSMinnow - 2009-12-30 6:22 PM Hi Glenn

I used to run and then do my swim immediately following for the same reason you do.  For me, it was a mistake.  I don't think my swim was as productive.  Sometimes my legs cramped and I just wasn't as focused as I felt I should be as a new swimmer.  Now I either bike or run first thing in the morning and do my swim around lunch time.  I have a very flexible work schedule so it makes it pretty easy for me to do things that way. I know Kim often does back to back run/swims so she will probably be able to provide a different POV.

Suzy

gdctex - 2009-12-30 6:57 PM Hey, I have been watching all the threads from the sidelines the last few days, absorbing all I can, especially those about swimming. I do have a question. Being on the plan from this site, I have days where I am supposed to run and swim. It is not called out as bricks, but I usually do them sequentially, running then swimming (which is probably considered backwards, but works better for me logistically). Are there any rules of thumb or advice as to whether this is a good idea or does it matter? I like to get all my workouts done in the morning before starting my day, but could split the run and swim to different times of the day as my schedule allows. Reading all the goals everyone has for 2010 is inspiring. I intend to make some of them my own as I am working on the list today and tomorrow. Thanks to all for sharing your experiences (tri related and not so much). It has made this thread such that I want to check it every time I get on my laptop.

Lol, Glen, I was just thinking about how to respond to your post because I am notorious for doing swim/run or run/bike or occasionally swim/bike back to back.  I also love to get all of my workouts "over with" in the morning.  I used the BT 16 week oly plan in 2008 and the 20 week HIM plan this past summer.  I found that I could swim first, then run or bike, but running or biking before swimming really made my legs too tired and my core could not engage as well (hence my balance in the water was less effective) if I swam after run or bike.  I feel okay running or biking after the swim, but only if it is a short day...for instance this morning a 45 minute swim followed by a 45 minute fartlek run went fine.  If I have a hard swim, then I would definitely need a break, which means our dog Ripley gets her walk in between.

I think it depends on how strong you are in that discipline. For me, I am not a very strong swimmer and need every ounce of energy, focus and core strength to keep my body position in a good place.  I am a stronger runner so doing a swim/run is not too tough.  Not so strong of a cyclist, I am really trying to split those days up into morning and afternoon, my coach recommends a 3 hour break if doing a longer or harder bike effort, which I try to do on my days off.

It is going to become very challenging as I get into the "build" stage and these 2 hour bikes and 2500 yd swims on the same day, but I think I will attempt to swim one night after work/week to try to get it all done.  Some creative calender juggling on the horizon for me, too!

Hi:

I am going  to be bold here and maybe a bit humble simultaneously.  Can anyone mentor me on message for just a little bit?  I have a hard time keeping up (especially during holidays) and just looked at the beginner half ironman plan.  I feel a bit intimidated.  I do not know what the terms even mean.  Like RPE....

I am trying to buy a garmin (finally) and a trainer because it's freezing as heck outside.  And really  need to start cycling indoors. If anyone is willing to help, please let me know.  (Hope that is okay to ask. Please forgive me if it isn't.)

I am about to ride oc the CT for an hour, but tomorrow is a first for me. I am running with my coach tomorrow (that is not the first), and we are doing the following:

20min easy
MS:
6 x 2min moderate-hard (Z3-4), 2min easy (Z1-2)

Cool Down:
10 min easy

This 2 minute intervals are going to hurt. I ran 3+ miles yesterday and I was still hurting from the 13.61 miles last Sunday. I am hoping I fell ok befoire the run because I will most likely feel lousy afterwards.

Wish me good luck.

I see many here have computrainers, those that do, do you also have a PowerTap?

If so can you give us a comparison of the two for indoor training?

As an alternative to CT, look at a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine, they have the power output graph that can relate speed to power output while riding on the trainer and what it generally equates to on the road.  They also sell a unit (wired is good enough while on the trianer) for about 80 bucks that will display power while riding on the trainer.  For someone like me in Minnesota where it winter 6 months out of the year, that would not be a bad alternative.

You'll be fine Doug, and remember the first one is the hardest, but you've run 10k's right?  2 min at 10k pace, no problem  I did a similar workout this morning and I just locked into it, pretended I was running a 10k during those hard intervals and then with a few nice jogging  breaks, makes it seem...well...kind of easy, when all is said and done   Report due at the end of class..er...end of the run!

Thanks a lot master and fattyfatfat (I always like your nick).  :-)

I need to get a HRM ASAP.  And I was in the store looking at the trainers yesterday.  Thinking of getting this: http://www.amazon.com/CycleOps-Indoor-Trainer-Training-Climbing/dp/... />
Although I really want Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll. :-)

I looked at the 1/2 iron plan - I would be on week 16.  Race early May.  I am now scared and my first thought is, "I can't do this."  And I have friends discouraging me saying things like - you are going to spend too much time doing it and neglect everything else.  While I am thinking that if I can do 5-7 a.m. at the gym, I'm kewl.  (And trainer on the weekends.)  But, I also am prone to injury so I cannot overtrain/act crazy.  And I definitely need to keep up my alternating between the three.  I also need a swim coach but they haven't answered me yet about a coach on the New York board.  I really want to do it, but receive so much discouragement and just learned what an RPE is and haven't gotten a HRM yet and am prone to injury so t hen I get seriously discouraged and think - well I really can't.

I am supposed to be running 90 minutes next week on the plan and I can only run 60 right now (I was training for only olympics last year.)  So then I feel behind and like 'well I really can't do this."  And no I do not want to change races.  This one is with my team and one I have been wanting to do all year.  I feel down and didn't sleep well last night thinking and pondering and worrying..  :-

Sigh.

Danett, do what you can, run slower if you have to. Your 90min pace should be different than your 60 min but at the end of the day do what you can and if you can't run all of it walk. On the gear side of things, if I can find my old Polar watch/hr monitor (200sd) you can have it. It only needs a new wristband. On the trainer note if you're interested I'll sell you mine. I'm picking-up my Christmas present this weekend and as a result don't need mine. It's the Cycleops Fluid Trainer 2. I used it for winter training last yr. I think 150 is fair based on what I see older units selling for on ebay. BTW I would recommend my old swim coaches but they're both not reliable in terms of time. They were constantly late or didn't show up. But they were very helpful correcting my stroke when they did. PM me if you want their info or any of the gear.

Good luck though I don't think you need it. If you can run on a dreadmill for 2 hrs, you have the mental discipline to do the 6x2.

Oooo I love goals!

Here are mine:

1.  Finish a HIM (planning two this year so don't want to put a time down yet)
2.  Run a marathon under 4:15 (planning 2)
3.  Swim a mile under 35 minutes (I am SLOW!)
4. Become more confident on the bike (including not falling over due to my clipless pedals-stop laughing!)
5.  Add in weight training more regularly

Wow looks like I will be busy!

Hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year!!!!

Not totally sure I can answer this question, without a little more information.  I know you are doing Oly's and the first is 5+months away, but how do those hours break into specific workouts?  For me, it isn't enough to sit on the trainer for a LOOOONG time, it is the specificity of the workout.  Because I am training for a longer event and cannot run, I usually have an LT ride, a VO2 rides, a Z2 ride, a technique ride (which I hate) and a long endurance effort of 2-2:30.  How are you thinking of breaking up the time?

It would also be great to have Ryan or Birdy weigh in if they are around.

AF_SGT - 2009-12-30 7:37 PM

So, since my poor ride today I was wondering, when confined to the trainer, what type of weekly volume do you try to do?  FWIW, I will be riding 4x/wk, and times will vary from week to week as I try to meet my required training volume IAW the TTB.  In January my weekly goals are as follows (h:mm):

Week 1: 3:30

Week 2: 4:15 (start of Base 1)

Week 3: 5:15

Week 4: 6:30

There are a couple of straggling days at the beginning & end of the month that take my monthly bike time to roughly 22 hrs on the bike/trainer.

I just finished registering for my first Triathlon in May!

*squuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllls*

I wish I could go out for a nice run today...but alas, it's snowing in East coast. I so cannot wait to get back to Las Vegas and get a start on swim training as well.
