I guess that's why you're the mentor and I'm the mentee. evondo - 2010-01-20 10:40 AM Guess I should give some insight to the thought process huh? A. To soon post race to be running that far, your legs need recovery. B. Easy exercise helps speed up recovery post race better than nothing C. Switch days means you'll do that long distance sometime soon and you need recovery evondo - 2010-01-20 10:32 AM D: short 2-3mi EASY run today Houstonrider - 2010-01-20 10:27 AM I have a question for the group.......... Since the half marathon my left leg/knee has been sore. Every day it has gotten better and it is similar to what I had experienced in the past. The pain is a dull tightness. I can do squats and lunges with out any increase in discomfort, but the soreness is still there. After my spin yesterday I felt better, so the question is..... I have 65 minute easy run scheduled today (part of a recovery week in HIM training), should I: A: Go for the easy run and just see how it feels B: Just rest, no run C: Switch days and swim today |

Master 1623![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!Congrats on the weight loss! Keep up the good work! loeber - 2010-01-20 10:36 AMSo my planned ride did not happen, I had some family stuff to deal with and by the time I would have been able to go it was below freezing and dark out, I did not want to be out on a first ride 5km from a road in the dark, on icy pathways. I went for my best run to date instead. Felt great and I could have gone longer but the gym was closing. Body weight this AM was 302!!!(Three hundred and two) I'm sooo skinny!! LOL. This is legitimatley smaller than I have been in almost 20 years without being sick and dehydrated. Realistically I should be under 3 bills by the weekend. |

I think it's just a cold, felt awful last night. This morning I feel a lot better but I'm losing my voice and my throat hurts. So I'm officially taking some time off training and resting/writing a 12 page paper due in 8 days (gotta love college!!!) Bummer. Rest up and eat right and you'll kick the sickness before you know it. |

Thanks. I know there are plenty of sprints but the point wasn't to just fill my schedule but to work towards a longer distance. There isn't another Oly until August. I find it difficult to train for something so far away. I just don't see myself training for 8 months with no payoff/gratification. Keri, I hear you about motivation and training with no payoff. That is tough. What about a destination race??? There has to be an oly or half-mary (no bike logistics) close enough via a long drive or short flight that also offers a bit of non-race fun. I know it would be complicated with leaving the kids, but you've been so focused on others lately why not one weekend for you? |

I don't want to be Debbie downer but I've just promised my kids I won't go away for a long time. Not to mention cost, transportation and the let down of doing a race with nobdy cherring for me and no husband to hug me at the finish. I am the first to admit I don't think I am seeing clearly right now. Having said that the problem is I had high hopes for this season. This is the only spring Oly in Houston. The next one is in August. I am not sure I want to do my first Oly when it's going to be 100 degrees. If I had Lonestar under my belt I would know I could do the distance. Obviously heat would be an issue but I would have the confidence of a previous Oly distance. A far off unlikely but still on the horizon goal was a HIM in November. Without an Oly between now and then it is even less likely. The Houston Half was going to show me I could do 13.1, the Lonestar was going to show me I could swim a longer distance in a wetsuit and build my bike speed/distance. I was hanging a lot on Lonestar not to mention every single tri person I know is going to be there, it is THE Texas race. So now it looks like my first Oly will be April 2011 and I don't see much point in a second season of sprints. I don't like training. I train so I can race. I feel like a year just slipped out from under me. |

Master 1318![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!I personally wouldn't recommend trying a new distance fresh out of off-season but tack it onto the end of your season. Race sprints through the back half of the year and prepare for the Houston Tri which is an Olympic. It's end of September so the weather should be slightly cooling down and you might even get lucky with a freak cold front ![]() KeriKadi - 2010-01-20 2:06 PM kcarroll - 2010-01-20 1:58 PM KeriKadi - 2010-01-20 11:06 AM evondo - 2010-01-20 7:22 AM Well that stinks but there are plenty of other races to fill your schedule with! Veteran 104![]() | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!Keri,That's a big bummer, but consider this: you've done a bunch of sprints, so you have a good idea what triathlon is about. Do you really need a qualifying race to prove that you can ride a bike 55 miles or run a half-marathon? You'd be going those distances in your training anyway, right? So skip the oly. It's not going to tell you anything you don't already know. You're already fit. Plan for the HIM in November and train with that in mind--you have LOTS of time! You said yourself that you train because you like to race, so do every 5k, 10k, time trial, and sprint tri in your area between now and then. You can make this a great season and end it on a high note in November. An added benefit is that you won't feel like you lost this year. You'll have trained hard and you'll be in shape to plan for a full IM in 2011 if you feel like that's your next step. Compounding the problem, though, is that we're trying to sell our house and buy a new one, so my wife has been using this strange word I've never heard before: frugality. On the other hand, my wife is an athlete and also into cool gear, so I may eventually win this one.
