Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by Asalzwed There is Red Rock on one side of town and the other there is a nice place. If I recall its Painted Desert. Both could have fun trail runs for you. There is plenty to do in Vegas other than listen to the sounds on the casino floor. Originally posted by 4agoodlife Went to Saguaro National Park today. Aptly named! Not sure I've ever seen so many of them in one area. Literally, a forest of cacti...minus any shade. Whew! It was really, really warm. I was pouring water into and over the kids to keep them cooled. We hiked up a river bed and climbed dry waterfalls. Ok, the kids wanted to climb everything. Saguaros can live 200 years, but they grow very slowly. This baby (pic) I found was only 1-2" tall, which makes it around 10 years old. Rad pics! Ahhh your desert is so different from ours. I can't wait to do some exploration in an area like this. My sis is having her bday in Vegas (which I HATE) but I think I am going to capitalize on an opportunity to explore red rock |

It's just not much fun since my team got booted out. Anymore, though, I'm starting to get disenchanted with all the injuries and the way players get used up and thrown away. I know they get lots of money and everything, but the physical cost is so huge, both in the pros and on the road there. Every time I hear about or see somebody getting injured, I think about how much pressure there is, physically and financially, for him to get back out on the field. I guess it's the same in every pro sport, but still. Yeah, cycling's brutal but it doesn't glorify the brutality. Okay, I'm done with my philosophizing. Carry on. |

Went to Ireland for 7's international finals spectating about a billion years ago when I was myself a rugger (wing forward - one of the most FUN positions ever, in any sport!). A most civilized affair (off the field, at least!) - except for the Aussie team that did not acquit itself well. Aaaaahhhh.... good times. Good times, indeed. Aside: interesting to me how I've gone from taking three very quick steps (and popping someone) to going fairly slowly, in a fairly straight line for a fairly long time. Matt |

Golfie—thinking of your poor pup! Yeah. No idea how moms of 2-leggers do it. AAAAAH HI STEEEEEPHEEEEE! |

No we are not gracious losers, I think it stems from our national identity being very closely linked to our sporting success. We also set very high expectations on our national teams, especially with regards to swimming, cricket and netball, and when they don't win the judgements and condemnation comes thick and fast in the media. |

To be fair , I meant actually the specific game, I'#ve been around enough americans to at least understand how it works, even if I can't understand how it takes forever. |

I do love the aussies though. Not many other countrys where you call your friends words that cannot be repeated on this forum and where you call your enemies "mate" I'd love to get out to aus to watch an ashes series one day... I was actually at work during that match, but we had a naff old black and white tv showing the game. Looking forward to the UK hosting the Rugby World cup this year though. Half way through the week, come on Friday, you can't get here soon enough. Unfortunately it means my weekend will be finished before yours. But Monday is a holiday for Australia Day - think forth July with the beach and BBQs and fire works and lots of beer (for most people) because we Aussies now how to party ![]() Oh and just so you know with Australians in general the more polite and nice they are to you the more they dislike you. It's a bit like your "bless your heart" expression, which now gets used a fair bit by myself and my PA (who is also a good friend). Our boss's boss heard us last week and burst out laughing - he grew up in America and knew exactly what we were meaning, and thankfully agreed with us. Edited by StaceyK 2015-01-21 9:45 AM |

![]() | ![]() Originally posted by Asalzwed Oh yeah, now that I have regained control of my emotions... who watched that Hawks game???? I'm generally not much of a football fan and we only sporadically watched the game until the last quarter, but we tuned in at the right time for all the excitement! I tend to root for the 'Hawks (on a casual level) because one of my good friends likes them, so I was very enthused to see the hard to believe I was really seeing it outcome! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can all you people who know anything about bikes give me your thoughts on this. I have been thinking about a new bike for at least 6 months. My current bike is a poverty pack special, think sora components and buying before you know anything. It is also uncomfortable as it is too short in the top tube for me, it is a small and really I need a medium. I had decided that I will wait until late this year and buy myself this for my birthday before next summer http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-bikes/liv/wa/cannington/envie... But I can't sleep tonight so I have been internet browsing (dangerous I know) and I came across this. They have been advertising it for a few weeks so I am thinking that I might be able to negotiate on the price a bit. http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-bikes/giant/wa/cottesloe/envi... To me with my very limited knowledge it looks like the specs on the 2015 have been upgraded a bit but I could be wrong about this so please feel free to point out to me if I am. I like giant bikes from experience they are solid and you seem to get better componentry for your $$$ at least here in Australia. No doubt the 2015 model of this bike is 1/2 the price for you over there. At this point I don't really see myself doing more than Olys (I know never say never) so I don't really feel like I can justify spending more than about $2,500 on a bike. What do you think? Is the 2015 bike so much better that I should just wait (I can) and get that before the start of next season? Or should I save some $$$ and go with the 2014? What do you think is a reasonable price for the 2014 bike - 50% off original retail? |

Well, and I wasn't necessarily targeting Aussies...I don't know that any sports culture are exactly gracious when they lose. At least the ones who are truly passionate. |

Still hard for me not to see her as elite, even is she's not so named for the race - I think once you set a world record, you kind of own that title! Glad that she's continuing to mentor and develop others in the sport (and compete in a way that makes sense for her). Good stuff... Matt |

That means potentially I have 10 more years to work on my elite status! I'll bet that was really challenging to officially "hang up the spikes." Even if she is going to be a runner forever. At least there is a ton of opportunity to keep setting masters records of all distances. So it's not really over.... |
