Can I just take a moment to tip my hat to those of the MG who run marathons regularly, and even those who have run just one marathon?  26.2 miles is a REALLY long way to run.  And those of you who finish in less than 4 hours, let alone BQ are amazing.

Just sayin'

why do you hate me, trevor and tony?

Nothin' but love, my man.  Maybe even a little man-crush, but I wouldn't admit it publicly.  Instead, I would just give you a chest-bump and leave it at that.

Really great mojo here on the MG!

A personal observation:

As 2011 has porgressed I have been slowly ramping up my swims. It is the beginning of May and I have already reached 2/3 of my swim total for all of last year. Reviewing the year today I noticed a few things:

1. Regular recovery is critical. You can only measure your progress after you allow yourself to recover.

2. You are capable of more than you know. The ditances I cover now semed only a distance dream a few months ago.

3. Training is like climbing a long flight of steps. Each step moves you foward, but you need the landings along the way to rest and recover.

4. Once you have developed a base you can really believe in the saying "trust in your training" on race day. All the work has been done by then and it is easier to have confidence.

GREAT POST!!! Love numbers 2 and 3!

I have an old (1980's) Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike for riding around the city (to and from work when i don't care if my hair is a mess)...no one wants to steal it, and it's nice and heavy so I get a good workout bombing down the hills. (not so fun going uphill!)

No kids, but Kathy has a fold up bike that only has 8 speeds and we can ride together which is fun.  And we're both big kids anyways so I guess it counts.

I only have one bike that I use for everything. My granddaughter has just learned how to ride without training wheels. Now I guess I'll have to take them off my bike too

I ride the road bike...only one I had until last month!  I'm PAST the kids riding with me stage, unfortunately.  Daughter won't ride, older son won't ride unless he's racing, younger one will only ride outside of a race if it's going to be a short one with no hills.....and there aren't many of these around here!!

My bum bike is an old mountain bike from about 20 yrs. ago. Like Kim said, it is heavy, solid, no one wants it, and it provides a good workout when we ride on the C & O canal towpath. That is a lot of fun, we just get pretty dirty and eat a few bugs : )

Same... old beater mtn. bike. It does have clipless pedals, though!! (I still have the old pedals too.) But this is the one I ride to the grocery store and with the kids if we ride together. Some of our trails are gravel, so this is perfect. I did have it tuned up a couple of years ago, as it had been neglected for about 12 years and was in sad, sad shape.

I've got an old MTB that I bought when the kids got too fast on their little bikes for me to keep up with them - I used to run along beside them and then one day my 4 year old disappeared down a cycle path and I could hardly catch him!

I have a Trek hardtail mountain bike I use to pull the bike trailer around.  We will be getting a trail-a-bike for the older one soon.  I put some less-knobby tires on it to reduce the rolling resistance a bit.  I don't do much bumming around on the bike without the kids.  It's either with them or a ride on my road bike.  If I commute, I usually use my road bike.

What tyres do people use on their road bike??

Mine seem ok on very smooth roads but very slow and bumpy on rough road surfaces... probably just my poor cycling

Serious Question Ahead:  Who's racing this weekend? we want details!

For the rest of us....destination races are in the cards for many of us.  Let's talk about the little things you pack that make a difference come race weekend/race day....especially helpful for our soon to be IM!!!!

My TT bike with disc cover, powertap, tri-spoke, wearing my skin-suit and aero-helmet. I drop that little PITA early in the ride and make him cry for his mommy.

good luck racing peeps!  nada here.

little things to bring... as dumb as they look, compression socks are freakin' awesome.  i've found that when i start beating up the legs as much as i have i can pretty much wear them anytime, not just for recovery, and they help.

What are you using now and what tire pressure are you using in them.  The tire itself won't provide much comfort one way or another, the tire pressure you use will.  http://www.michelinbicycletire.com/michelinbicycle/index.cfm?event=airpressure.view is a decent reference for a starting point.  I normally pump my road bike tires to 100psi.

LOL my cross bike I try to get away with as little air as possible to where they don't roll off the rim.

I've used Michelin Pro Race 3's in the past and I thought they were good all around tires.

Now I pretty much stick with whatever is near the top of Al Morrison's tire list, he's a guy that performs tests on tires and rates them based on their rolling speed.  I try to buy the faster tires.  So right now I'm using Bontrager R4 aero tires for racing.

I have a 5K in Kalamazoo, MI this Sunday.  I'm still recovering from the adventure race I did with my husband last weekend.  I SERIOUSLY couldn't walk down a set of stairs or sit down without holding on to something for three days!   Invested in a foam roller and started working on some of the sore areas.  Have a massage tomorrow night.  Hopefully, after that I'll be as good as new.  Smile  I'm still a beginning runner, and considering how rough last weekend was, I'm not expecting to have a great race.  That said, I would be thrilled if I could get under a 10min/mile pace.  That would be a new PR.

Actually our son is just starting to get old enough to ride with.  We're going to REI to pick out a new bike for him tonight so he has one for the summer.  He has his first tri of the year at the end of the month, big time now, he has to swim 50M, bike 1.8 miles and run a mile I think.  He hasn't ever had to swim 2 laps before now.

I would probably just ride my road bike or cross bike with him when we do ride together.  (I'll still drop him like 3rd period french though...) ; )

I was going to race on Sunday but thought better of the repercussions of racing on Mothers day : )

We usually do at least one destination tri a year, they're a lot of fun.

It's not something I bring that makes a difference (though I agree with john, I have compression sleeves and tights, they're awesome) it's the list I make ahead of time, and I double, triple check before we leave.

Maxxis Detonator for training.  i don't switch the rear when going from the trainer to the road.  just lazy.

Continental GP 4000's for racing.   Not that that helps me any ;-).

here is the latest revision of al morrison's list tony mentioned above.
