Question of the day: Since I experienced an hour delayed start for the first time ever, it threw off my pre race nutrition as I burned most of it off by shivering all morning. Has anyone experienced a race daley before? What do you do while you wait around? I just stood around and talked and do not think that is the best approach.

First off... congrats on what sounds like a great race!  (i am one that also hates it when swims are cancelled)

On what to do with delays?  I had a 1.5hr one at silverman a few years ago as my first experience.  since the full had already gone off, they wouldn't let us back into transition or to our gear bags...  so, my thought... Relax!  Don't get caught up in the worrying etc. and accept that the nutrition is a bit off (for oly and up, but moreso for HIM/IM dist.) and start formulating the plan for the nutrition on the bike and think if there is anything different that you will do in T1 and in the first 30-1:00 of the bike.  (Catching up on nutrition rarely works by the way! concentrating on staying consistent is likely the better decision  Laughing)

Not really. An Olympic/Sprint is too short in duration to have your nutrition get screwed up.

When there is a delay, I just try to relax.  Maybe sip on some water or sports drink.

Unless you are delayed for hours, there's really no way to meaningfully mess up your nutrition so just stick with what you had planned.

Hi everyone, finally got to do a race!  Here's the race report.

If you don't feel like reading I had an insignificant swim, great bike, and worse run than last year.  Placed 3 out of 28 in my AG.  Looking forward to working out the kinks in two weeks at my next race, an Oly.

Cheers.

Fred Doucette - 2011-06-13 6:50 AM Morning. Did my best effort yesterday but did not have it and came up short on MY expectations. Humbled and disappointed but I accept the day and will make my best attempt to adjust accordingly. Actually proud of my run despite coming up short as I took in essentially zero fluids as was too nauseous. Own your failures and make objective assessments and adjustments. If this comes across as being 'too hard on myself' then you simply don't know me, because in relative terms I am being quite kind on myself. Have a great day.

You have some seriously high expectations! Something tells me you'll be nailing the next race.

"I don't accept 'pretty good' when I know 'much better' could have been achieved."

I think this is my new favorite statement.  I may have to steal it for my blog.

I was tracking several triathletes during Eagleman yesterday. Another very accomplished triathlete (tri coach, Kona qualifier etc) had a really rough day. She reported on facebook that she was puking from mile 50 on the bike on. So my question is how do you know you can keep pushing on and not really hurt yourself? I mean where is the line between HTFU to finish the race and making sure you don't end up in the hospital?

By the way, I need to stop looking at the weather. The forecast shows a high of 95 on Sunday......

Fred, good job in some tough conditions out there.  I appreciate your honesty in the evaluation of your race though.  I'm sure you'll learn from the experience and it will make you stronger/wiser in the future.

Short RR of my team time trial yesterday

also saw the results of the Hawaii resident lottery for Kona spots.  I wasn't chosen, but I know 2 who were.  Awesome for them as they already have IM distance experience.

Couple of quick equipment questions:

1. I have Garmin Edge 305 and Forerunner 405 that both came each with their own HR monitor. I have found that each monitor works seperately with each device and one monitor can not work on both computer's. Is this correct or should each monitor work for both computers? If not can I buy a universal HR monitor from Garmin?

2. I need to set up a bottle cage inbetween my aerobars and was wondering what works best for everyone here. I plan to ziptie the cage to my bars so what is the preferred cage for everyone?

Each strap has it's own code.  The reason both your watches won't work with either strap is because they are currently coded to different straps.  So in order to use the same strap, you need to take the strap you want to use, then take the watch that currently does not work with it and "re-pair" them so that the watch now uses that coded strap to aquire HR.  The reason each strap has it's own code is so that you don't pick up on someone else's HRM strap if you're running/riding next to them.  Instructions on pairing your watch to HRM strap should be in the manual or can likely be found online.

There are specific setups that can be bought.  I think profile design makes one that's around $15 and X-lab makes a carbon one that sells for $40+.

I just used zip ties.  Zip tie the top part of the cage to the aero bars, and zip tie the bottom portion under my stem.  I also put some thin rubber between the bottom of the cage and my stem so it wouldn't "rattle" or scratch my stem.

I think I use this one:

Got in a good short run at lunch.  Group riding after work.

I'm officially signed up for Cycle to the Sun as of Sunday...and my training specific to it begins today.  Goal is to crack 4 hours.  Chris Lieto has done the race a couple of times in 2007 (2nd place 2:48:00) and 2008 (1st place 2:51:46).

This sounds like an epic ride and a lot of run. I wish I had the money to travel all do all these races. Wisconsin has some decent climbs, here to in La Crosse, but man 10,000 feet over 36 miles?!

Saw an interesting thred on Slowtwitch that I thought I would bring over here on the issue of overdistance training. I see Bryan already chimed in, how did you recover over those 8 hour rides, and what was done the day before, after?

Thread talked about biking over the distance of the ironman leg for training. How about biking over the distance of HIM training? I am putting in between 50-80 mile rides, and I am hoping to get some runs of 12-16 miles of this summer for training? Obviously the bike won't kill the body as much, but what about running if your not doing IM?

That looks like nasty fun.  Good luck with that.

I was hoping to get in my first OWS of the season (in WI) this morning.  I get out to the lake at 5am to meet the group and the minute I pull up, a nice crack of lightning lights up the sky and it starts pouring.  We decided it best to cancel and instead went to the local greasy spoon where I ordered the cardiac special along with 3 cups of coffee.

Didn't run across it, but did propose to my wife on it on 7/14/2001.  I'm sure a run would be memorable/enjoyable event as well!

Biking that far just makes me tired, beyond that there's no DOMS or other issues which would adversely effect other training in the days following. It was an experiment of sorts. I think maybe doing it once would have been sufficient and then a do a long bike with more intensity as a compliment. It was as close to simulating an actual Ironamn in terms of the fatigue that I have ever come oin a training session, especially the mental fatigue. I even had to hit the Coke around 6 1/2 hours just to survive it, just like I would do in a race towrds the back side of the run. I routinely ride more than 56 miles for Half training, I think going over on the bike is a great way to be aerobic for the same time as amost the entire duration of a Half.
