The weather promises to be stellar and so does the company. I picked up some crazy food poisoning last night and have been attempting to work through it most of last night and today. It's still a work in progress, but I am hoping that by the time I wake up tomorrow, it'll be a distant memory. Haven't changed my plans or goals. Ready to hit the start line. Next time you hear from me, it'll be post marathon! So, food poisoning as pre-race nutrition results in a marathon PR. The possibilities are endless Congrats on your races, Suzy, Kim & Linda. |

Expert 847 Brevard, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed ashort33 - 2013-03-23 5:57 PM good luck to our runners tomorrow! Weather got in the way today.... 5 min into the swim, they put us on lightening delay. 30 minutes later, they canceled the swim portion, but we were still on rain delay. An hour later they scrapped the bike due to standing water on the course (multiple u-turns on the course and they thought it would be unsafe). We ended up doing a 5k a half hour after that... Good news is that I ran it in 27:39 only 30sec slower than my fastest 5k ever back before I injured myself a year and half ago! Final kick was at 6:20/mi pace..... I'm sure it was a frustrating day and it looks like you used that frustration to lay down a great run. Way to go!! |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed What a day!!! Very happy to have BQ'ed again and even happier to have beaten my '07 PR. Landed a podium spot to boot. Linda and Kim live in the land of hills that is for sure. While I wasn't sure how my gut would hold up after food poisoning, I lined up with the 3:30 pacer, hung with him for the first 8m and then had to let him go. My HR was at threshold during the early hills from 4-8m and I knew sticking there was a mistake. I was feeling great, taking in nutrition on schedule through the half before hitting a few rough spots. I kept telling myself they would pass and they did right up until the dreaded 20m. I had some back tightness when I woke up this morning and it started causing me some problems just as I started feeling a little light on calories (wonder if that had something to do with keeping no food in me yesterday? pushing too hard so early?). I suffered greatly from that point on with the last 3m being a complete sufferfest. I knew I was losing time and kept doing the PR math in my head. I figured I would come in around 3:35 and landed at 3:37:53, a 2" PR on a much tougher course, but slower than I believe I was capable of. I did walk a little through every H20 stop to get water down and I had to walk a few more times to avoid losing it. The walking through water stops was the right thing to do, I need a little more grit when I hit the depths of the pain cave. More to work on, but I couldn't be happier. I am very sore, very tired, but looking forward to seeing Kim and Kathy and Linda and Jeff for dinner tonight. Much to celebrate. Great races for us all and great friendship too. Awesome. So glad I decided to make this trip. Edited by SSMinnow 2013-03-24 6:25 PM |

Master 2621 Almaden Valley, San Jose, California | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed WHAT A WEEKEND! Drove up to Oakland (always sketchy!) picked up my race packet and Kim's, took a picture of the mayor, and met Suzy! Finally!! Had a yummy carb-load meal with Suzy & Paul (purple risotto- looked funky, tasted GREAT) and called it an early night (see Suzy's post about WHY!) Early on Sunday, Kim & Kathy made the trek over the bridge, and did their final bib-pinning, backpack loading and sunscreening in my room. Leisurely, because we weren't sure where we were going, walk to the start, where we met Paul - Suzy was LONG gone. The Raiderettes were there, however, so I got a few photos for Jeff. Kim and I ran the first 7 feet together, and then she was LONG gone!! she looked strong, fast and awesome! I figured as soon as she saw a disney character, I'd catch her. Apparently, Oakland didn't invite Minnie. So much for THAT plan. didn't see Kim again! Happy with my race for the most part. Haven't trained worth beans, this was my longest run since October's RNR 1/2, but I was fine. More hills than I anticipated, despite what Kim says, they were HILLS. Got a few blisters, which isn't common for me. Tripped on a pothole, which IS common for me. My best HM is 1:47:57. Had a secret goal to beat it, but knew it wasn't realistic with the training (not) I've done. My Garmin says I finished with a 1:49:12. Oakland has no result for me, which I'm REALLY hoping they fix, because I think I got 10th in my AG. Not in Kim's (5th!) or Suzy's (3rd!) arena, but good enough for me!! Leisurely stroll back to the hotel (since Suzy's car died) an ice bath and a shower, then a fast drive home. Jeff and I dropped Kid #2 the the airport, and made the long drive back up to SF for dinner with Kim, Kathy, Suzy & Paul. Awesome food, amazing company, wonderful night. If I could a) walk b) have results c) walk I'd be a happy camper! |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Sadly our trip is coming to a close. Like Linda said, we had a great time. It's as if we've been friends for years. Well, technically I guess we have been friends for years, but now we actually have all seen each other! Paul and I had a fantastic Dim Sum lunch hosted by Kim and Kathy. Like last night, we ate our brains out, had many laughs and then went to Kim's clinic which was neat to see. I wouldn't change a thing about the weekend. Can't wait to do it somewhere again soon. PS. As far as I know no plans have been made for next year. I will say doing a running race is a whole lot less stressful than a triathlon for me! No swim and no hauling the bike! |

Elite 3072 san francisco | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hey guys! For the person who lives the closest to the race, it took me the longest to post about this great weekend! I rarely am hitting the desktop these days unless I am at work, and the run on of the iPad kind of sucks for the reader...sooooooooo... It was so incredibly wonderful to race with Suzy and Linda on Sunday. It's true...I made poor Linda pick up my race packet, too busy (read. lazy.) to go over and get it myself! Although, Suzy and Paul made it back and forth across that darn bridge at least 4x this weekend. And Linda's gas bill probably hit the century mark for all she drove this weekend! I started off strong, tried to keep a couple of people within sight, but started to fade close to mile 9-10, and I am sure it was those darn HILLS!!!! wait. what? No, it was my lack of training that probably dropped my 7:10-7:20's down to 7:50-8:00's or so. But I am overjoyed that my heel did not hurt during or after the race. That really was my main goal. Oh, and hitting 1:40 was secondary and I managed by less than a minute, TG! The best part of the weekend was seeing Suzy and Linda and their guys. And eating lots and lots of yummy food. And laughing and having common weird stuff that our spouses could commiserate about!!!! Happy Tuesday, everyone! |

Let's talk about between meal eating. Take an inventory around your home or office.....What kid of between meal eating you do? Good morning - happy hump day! This post has my name all over it. First - the D'Alessio family is racing this weekend. We are heading south to the Norfolk area for the time trial. My kids are going to give it a try too. Not sure my daughter (6 yrs. old) can cover the 6 miles but we'll see. It's a closed road so I don't have to worry about that. I am excited to test the legs and see how my training measures up to a solid effort. And it's funny that the question of the week is about food. I had a 30min call this morning with a wellness coach who is also a registered dietician. My company has been on this big wellness kick so we have all of these new (FREE) resources. I thought what the heck do I have to lose. Anyway I explained my issues - mainly unrelenting hungry throughout the day especially as my workouts ramp up. We talked about my current meals and the amount of calories I take in with each. She made some suggestions bumping up my meals by 100-200 calories and more protein to try and curb my hunger. We'll talk again in 2 weeks to see how the changes go. Hopefully more satisfying meals with prevent from eating more calories in the long run and get closer to my happy race weight. If anyone struggles with meal planning especially at dinner time - take a look at thefresh20.com. I love these plans. They have really worked for us at home. 20 ingredients for 5 dinners and all fresh, unprocessed ingredients. I'm able to make fresh dinners quickly each night of the week. |
