gotta run - 2011-01-12 8:52 AM Blizzards and earthquakes and the flu, oh my! Stay safe and get healthy, everyone!

No racing for me this weekend. What I'm doing right: getting myself to the pool and starting to rebuild my swim base. What I need to improve: getting more out of my bike workouts.

how was the movie?
x2john, you are brilliant, THAT should be the next mg meet up...12 of us in a van, 197 miles, three mountains to get over...priceless!Linda-i was sleeping soundly and missed another one. Not the normal time of year for these.I am sorry if this is one big run on, i am on the i touch...

i'd be all over that!   and the minnow could be in charge and we'll call her kazoo!

It's weird hearing about all the bad weather everyone is experiencing. That is normal life up here in the north. Hope everyone is feeling better soon and all the snow melts where it is not supposed to be.

Cancelled school and events because of a forecasted snowfall.  What is the world coming to? Next thing you know Sugar won't want to train in the rain

I hear you Red. Growing up in NY I am used to snow. Down here, however, they do not have the equipment to handle anything heavy or significant ice. The temps move above freezing for part of the day melting stuff and then refreeze as the temperature drops creating lots of ice. Not good. Combine that with people clueless about driving in bad weather and the result is a shut down of almost everything.

velcromom - 2011-01-12 8:26 AM Not racing -b ut officiating at a huge, 2500 swimmer, championship meet this weekend.  Always exhausting!

I'm working on consistency.  Trying to do my own 'peach' challenge. So far, so good, but we're only on day 12!

I'm also trying to eat better, and that's not going so well.  I tend to overdo something everyday, it seems.  Pepsi, wine, cheese, Izze, pellegrino, cheese biscuits, spice drops.  Seems like everything has it's day, and I overindulge on that item.  No self control.  Some items are obviously less healthy (at least I wait until much later in the day if it's wine!), and some are just too expensive to rationalize as I keep my stash from my family!

Within my training plan (which is another problem, because I really don't have one) I'm trying to compete in the USAT NCC,
and this month is bike month.

Funny. I heard the Calgary Flames played Carolina Hurricanes last night. and they werr talking about potentially postpoing the game. The Calgary commentators were baffled about why.

No racing for me I am in week 7 of a 16week program can really feel it this week glad week 8 is a recovery week.

I have been comparing my HRM from data to time My zone 2 is starting at 162 and this past week I have been having a hard time reaching that but my times are gettting faster with less effort. Now they are at about 157 to 159. Should I recalculate it or leave it until the progam is over and push it harder to get to that zone.

No racing for me.

What am I doing right?  Getting back to some level of consistency.  Weekend workouts are pretty sparse for me this time of year (due to skiing and wrestling) so I need to fit it all in Mon-Fri.  Will need to get more swimming and biking in in the future but right now am trying to make sure I stay consistent with the level I am at.

Suzy:  Details!  Kim and I are riding the Tunitas Creek/Old La Honda route.  It's actually part of the Tour de California.  It's got some wicked climbs, and some gorgeous views.  Does a bit on Highway 1 along the coast, and has a little bakery in Pescadero that does amazing artichoke bread.  Can't wait!  You're welcome to join us!!   You should probably leave today to allow for weather delays.

Trevor:  yuk.  Not a peach fan!  'peach' refers to the color on your training log when you log a workout.

BTW, there's also a relay here......from Napa (Calistoga) to the beach.  Crosses the Golden Gate Bridge at midnight or so.  Hubby did it a few years back....I'd love to get a relay team together!!

Off to the pool.....

no racing for me.

Doing right: building my endurance base. I'm really trying to take it easy on my long runs & stay within Z2/Z3.  It's really hard to hold back since my easy pace is so slow, but I sticking to my HRM to tell me to slow down. Also, I'm spending a lot of time working on my swim technique & breathing.  Signed up for masters swim which will start in a few weeks.

Doing wrong:  my diet.  I'm still eating like crap.  I think I'm taking in around 3400 calories a day! This holiday trip isn't helping either.

Ran in one of these relays last year........ it was fun.  Hoping to keep the team together and doing it again for 2011.  The hills on the "Great River" that we did sucked.  Thankfully, I ran one of my 8.3 mile all uphill legs in the middle of the night so you didn't have to see it the whole way up....

didn't read this until I got online today.

You owe me 1 Keyboard and a half a cup of coffee....

NICE ONE... it did make me chuckle. I didn't run unfortunately it was WAY too slippery.

My 50 mile commute home looked like a pinball game with cars and transport trucks off the road and smashed up. This morning it took me 90 mins to get to work with many accidents along the way.

I did shovel several drive ways however. I did mine, logged it then thought I am not sitting still so I shovelled my older neighbors on either side and the one lady just down the road, and I can feel it today.

I have a snow blower but MEH! its not a work out.

My flight to New York was cancelled tonight.  Now stuck in Madison with no gear.  It's all sitting at the airport.  Suppose I could run in jeans, boots, and my santa sweater.

Make the most of it....go to Paisan's and get some Pizza or the Parthenon and get a Gyro.

mighty mom - 2011-01-12 10:19 PM

The snow has been falling all night here.  Daycare is closed and the pool has a delayed opening of noon so no early morning w/o for me today.  I'm hoping I'll finally use this time to get my trainer setup and get in a good bike, maybe fit in my swim later if MH is feeling generous.  Only problem is I still have actual work to do on top of caring for my munchkins.

For this new year, I've been struggling with getting on the bike.  1. I haven't set up my trainer b/c I can't figure out where to put it, and 2. I still need to figure out why my HRM isn't working.

Question for all; I've got a 1/2 mary at the end of Feb for which I'm currently trying to follow Higdon's intermediate 1/2 mary plan but with fitting in (or trying to) the swim and bike into my schedule it leaves me with this..
Mon- skiing; Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sun- run; Wed and Sat- swim and bike. I'm just building for swim and bike but I'm worried that I'm not putting in enough volume for the run for the 1/2 mary.  Is 4 days/ wk enough? I am shooting for sub 2hr.

I did something very similar Christina.  I think 4 days/wk will get you there.  I put together a 10 week program for my 1/2 mary last Dec, which had 4 days of running: 1 long run, 1 tempo run, 1 track run, 1 recovery run.  The other days were swim & bike, which was great because it gave my legs a chance to "rest".  My longest run peaked at 16 miles two weeks prior to race date.  I ran a 1:54:45, which was my first sub 2hr.

I think the Higdon's intermediate 1/2 mary should get you there.  A few observations: 1.) the weekday runs seem a bit short.  My tempo & track runs were usually at least 6 miles (with warm up & cool down).  Only my recovery runs were short (30 mins at very easy pace). 2.) the track intervals are only 400m intervals.  I included longer intervals in my track sessions like 1 x 3200 (1/2 mary pace), 2 x 1600 (10k pace), 4 x 800 (5k pace).  This really helped me with my race pace and knowing how my body feels at these paces.

Hope this helps.

You trail-runner types - tell me about trail shoes.  I am planning on a trail run this year and would like to get a H20-proof pair for running in snow/rain/uckky conditions...  I saw these and they seem good, but how does the fit work?  Is it just like road shoes - neutrual, prontation, etc.

i run in these.   really like em'.

i don't like socks below the ankle on trails, to much crap gets in my normal low cut running socks, balega's.  i tried a pair of wrightsocks on sunday's run...didn't like them.

Always late to the game, but there are a ton of good shoe's out there....

I think that you will find the problem with Salomon is in the arch- Be prepared for a gnarly blister the size of Canada on your arch after a longer run (ASK RP---- We both went through it, and know several others who have gone through it)....

This is the best Goretex shoe all around both in weight, and "breathability"

For a non Goretex built to last an my go-to shoe this is a must shoe to have..... You can find them pretty cheap if you shop around (REI has them on clearance right now...)

I am currently sporting these, and feel ook with them.... Running Out in the snow last night they felt pretty good....
