To the locals and those who have raced IMFL before, what is the typical water temp in early November? I am trying to decide whether a sleeveless wetsuit will do, or if I need to purchase a new full sleeve. Any guidance would be appreciated! low 70s |

Extreme Veteran 483 St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread re - water temp, I heard a rumour that wetsuit legality was being debated for the Clearwater Championships, due to high water temps. Anyone heard this, would tend to suggest higher temps for IMFL also |

Regular 408 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I am curious where people are at on their long bike rides. I did a century last week-end without any break in aero bars about 90% of the time. First solo, non group ride century. Big thing is without any rest stops. Boy did it hurt can't imagine running 26 afterwards. Swimming is not a problem and frequently swim 3 miles. Can't believe I wrote that. I remember, not long ago, not being able to swim 200 yards freestyle. Really proud of my swimming improvement. The run is my biggest problem as I am constantly injured. I did 12 miles last week-end. I will probably only get to 16 miles for my longest run. I feel not bad right now but don't want to jinx it so thinking about mixing in water run and elliptical during the week to supplement run. I tend to ramp up way to quickly and injure myself. Have to show constraint. I am loosely following the 13 weeks to a 13 hour ironman. But I actually started two weeks late. So modified 11 weeks to a 13 hour ironman I have multiple levels of goals. My semi-realistic goal is to break 13 hours. My dream goal is to break 12 hours. But I will be happy if I just complete this first one. Also I am prepared to do some walking on the run. Depending how I am feeling I am looking at doing a walk-run-walk-run etc approach. |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I was supposed to do a 5 hour ride last weekend but I got sick and couldn't. I plan on doing a 5 hour ride this weekend... even though I have IM Syracuse 70.3 the following week. Taper is overrated. ;-) My longest run will be about 2:30 - which might equal about 16 miles in the blazing Texas heat. I'm not risking injury and recovery time trying to run 20+ miles (plus running that much just sucks). I do not operate under the illusion that I will actually be able to run the full 26.2 miles and I don't need practice walking. |

Who says you cannot stop? One thing I learned on the MS 150, is that if you stop at the aide stations, even for 60 seconds, at the end of the day you feel much better. At IMFL '08 I stopped at 30, 60, and 90 miles. Quick pit stop and back on the bike. It does wonders for the legs and rear end. Especially if you've been practicing without the stops. I stopped once on the run at about mile 25 on the run. At that point I just had to get off my feet. This time I think I'll stop every six miles for a minute or two. Maybe that way the last 6 miles won't take two hours. By way of encouragement - we've still got several weeks of peak training. You've just done your first century, but in the next 6 weeks you'll get significantly stronger and have more endurance. Before my first IM I did only a couple centuries, and the bike was fine. It does get easier. Promise. (or as Catwoman says, learn to lie to yourself in training, it will come in handy in the race.) |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm in the peak phase of my plan, so long rides are coming. I've got a 5 hour ride this weekend. I'm doing a full aqua bike 9/25 and then a century ride 10/9. The rest will be 5-6 hour rides so whatever mileage I get in that time. I usually stop once on the long rides to take a potty break and refill my bottles. Long runs will get up to 3 hours, which for me will be 16-18 miles, depending on temps. I've done multiple marathons before, so I know I can cover the distance. It will just be slower after a 2.4 mile swim and 112 bike. I have to trust the plan and hit as many workouts as possible. I figure if I do that and get to the start without injury, then I will cross that finish line at some point before midnight. |

Regular 408 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I want to share that I did not obviously start from scratch two weeks ago. I did a HIM in April and then several sprint races through the summer. Serious IM training started two weeks ago. I did a 1 hour bike 1 hour run brick last night and felt like cr*p. It is really weird that without any rhyme or reason some days I feel great and some days feel terrible. |

Sometimes my long run or ride feels great and then I can barely get through a 30 minute run. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread For the first time this year with all I've been through wondering if I will be able to do IMFL. Since knee scope in June, knee has been consistently improving and it has had little pain just discomfort and slight swelling. After run last night during which I had zero pain, I did my normal stretching routine, then when I stood up couldn't walk normal as i had some significant discomfort. It is mostly annoyed when weight bearing. It's better today but I still can't walk normal without limping. Hope everyone has a great weekend of training! |

I have bad knees too and sometimes they just hurt. Goes away pretty quickly though. My longest ride so far is 130 km (81-82 miles). I've also done two 120 km rides (75 miles) one of which I had a 10 km run right after. Longest run so far was 1 hour bike followed by an 11.25 miles run, although I did some longer stuff earlier this year. I don't know for certain, but I think my coaches plan is for me to do the following distances in the next several weeks: Sept 18/19: 130 km ride, next day 1 hour ride/18 km run Sept 25/26: 100 km ride/12 km run, next day 25 km run Oct 2/3: 150 km bike, next day ride 1 hour/25 km run Oct 9/10 (Canadian T-giving): 130 km ride/12 km run, next day 30 km run Oct 16/17: 180 km ride, next day????? (don't actually have my schedule beyond the 3rd yet, but this is what he had people do that were training for IMLoo and IMC.) So given that schedule looks like I'm going to have a heavier emphasis on long bricks than long rides. Only one over 100 miles and one close to 100 miles, but I will have 3 at 82. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I hope it is just a minor set back Kathy! Like the others said, give it a bit of a break and some ice. As far as long bike I am at about 80 miles. This is a recovery week but I have some 100 plus rides coming in Sept and early Oct. With 2 weekend conferences in September, fitting them in will be a bit of a challenge, but I will manage! |

Your health and preventing further (and possibly permanent) damage should be your primary concern and focus. Do not attempt to race at IMFL if it's going to make things worse. It just isn't worth it. I know that you'll be bummed about it if that is what happens but it sure beats another surgery or worse. Listen to your body! I'm as competitive and Type-A as they come and it took me a long time to see things rationally when it came to my body's limits. I had to forgo the Florida 70.3 this year and it sucked but I was in no shape coming off of the brutal day I had at the Texas 70.3 three weeks earlier. My body was destroyed. I made the smart decision to skip the race... but I still spent the week at Disney with my wife and kid. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Best guess is that I have Pes anserine tendonitis. So doing the RICE to see how things improve. I can swim without pain. Tomorrow I'll try trainer or flat riding and swim. It will be a wait and see type thing. I won't jeopardize my long term health to do the race. I've been thinking if I would want to swim/bike and DNF if I can't run or walk..probably not. I don't want to plan on walking either. I have time to see how it goes and if I can train. Hope this is a temporary set back but relatively is I'm behind on my training for the run so I need to be able to get my run training in to be ready come 11/6. I appreciate the kind words everyone. |

Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Gravesjo- Have a great race today. Let us know how it goes. I started back running and riding the trainer a few days ago. Things are going well. It may be a while before I will be back in the pool or outside on the bike. Once the road rash heals up then I should be good to go. I'm afraid to get back into the pool until everything has scabbed over and closed up. Last thing that I need is an infection. |

Veteran 252 peoria, az | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread A little about my half Ironman day: Poured rain for almost the entire bike leg. Thunder, lighting and everything. Really hilly and when it's raining that hard it's pretty darn scary! When the rain did stop it got hot and humid. Then I had the pleasure of being chased by two BIG dogs. Luckily the local police intercepted the hounds and cut them off before they had me for breakfast. Mentally and physically I was toast coming off the bike. I did cover my shoes with a plastic bag in transition and I'm so glad I did. I had fresh dry socks and shoes for the run. Most people (Jay) poured about a cup of water out of their shoes. The run was more hills, hot and humid. Reminded me a lot of the Memphis in May run X2! So, there was a lot of walking, not so much running. Knee is still an issue. It feels bruised and now looks bruised so I'm not sure what is going on. I have some sort of bleeding going on under my knee cap. I'm glad I finished this race. I think it taught me a lot about mental toughness. I would never ride in the rain before. The only big bike crash I have had was in the rain about 10 years ago so it was something I needed to face. Now, I know I can handle pretty much anything Florida has to offer! Took first place in my age group because I was the only one in my age group. Ha |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Are you guys following IMWI? There is a cool google document folks are updating to see where the BTers are. The IM site didn't update splits on the bike. A few BTers have that myathletelive.com which rocks. You can see where they are and how fast they are moving at all times. It would rock to have that for IMFL. Only thing is is your family has mobile phone the interface isn't as great as what you can get on normal PC. I like to think we are next up...yah that Kona race is in between but that isn't for normal folks. I ran today at the track without knee pain I'm hoping the knee issue was just a one off and will be okay. Back to regular training tomorrow with intensity taken down a little just to be cautious. I think I have 17 hours of training on my plan. Thank goodness I don't work so I can fit training in around shuttling my kids around. J/K as I know most all of you have jobs, families and are training for IM which I don't know how you guys do it all. Hope everyone's long training this weekend went well! |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Kathy, glad to hear your knee is better. Hopefully it was just something weird and it will be fine. I need to look at that spreadsheet for Wisconsin. I'm trying to track someone from BT. The live tracker (which he has) doesn't seem to be working for hm. It only shows him just starting the run while the athlete tracker on Ironman.com shows him through the third checkpoint of the run. If they have those for Florida, I may get one. |
