Rather than a separate wheel, I have a tire I use on the trainer. I always will put a bike on there and leave it for months at a time... right now it's my roadie as I'm not riding outside. If weather gets a bit nicer I might swap out bikes, put the tri bike on the trainer and use the roadie outside while the roads are icky. Anyway, I digress.

For indoor tire-pumping, I ALWAYS use a floor pump. The mini is only for flat-fixing on the road. I don't think I could ever get enough tire pressure in using the mini to ride for a long time -- long enough is all I'm hoping for.

Did you try putting the flatted tube under water to make sure there is no itty bitty slow leak?

It sucks getting up early only to have a ride thwarted by technology. Hate that!!! It's like showing up at 5am to a closed pool or late lifeguards. Suck.

These are the stock tires (on an '09 bike) so I'm guessing they'll need to be replaced soon anyway. Probably should get new training tires and racing ones, yes?

The mini pump was there, my full pump was not and in a freezing garage, and I thought it'd probably be good to use it before getting a flat on the road, just in case.

Good idea. I'll check the tire under water.

Looking for some thoughts/opinions from those a bit more knowledgeable than me.  I am currently training for a  marathon in April. I am up to a 18 mile training run in my plan.  Next week is supposed to be 20 miles. That day I have been invited to run with a group of guys who are training for an ultra.  The run that they are doing is 26.2.  They have said that we will be runing at a conversational pace, so no faster than 4 hours to finish.  I thnk I can handle that without much difficulty.  My question is do you guys think that it's too big a jump in mileage? I really don't want to risk injury and have to scale back training for this race, but on the other hand, I'd really like to run with these guys and pick their brains about running ultra distances as these kinds of races are on my bucket list. So far I've been injury free but have suffered from ITBS in the past.  Thoughts?

This guy is one of the runners.....

One thing about those ultra runners is that they are very good at pacing.  So if they say they are going to go a certain pace then I am sure they will stick to hit.  Now for you... Couple thoughts:  It is a big jump, and may be too big of a jump at this point... HOWEVER it could be great for you mentally, and to learn pacing.  My fear is the recovery time for you.  That could set you back an extra few days.

Is there anyway you guys can plan your route so that it ends at your meeting place around 20 miles and if you are feeling "GREAT" you can continue on with them?

Not exactly, but I could bail out at the 20 mile mark and meet up with another friend who will be very near that location (about a mile away).

fattyfatfat - 2012-01-26 10:24 AM oh, and nice talking to you this morning.  have fun on on the left BEST coast, jerk, you Lucky Dog.

There, fixed that for ya!

Christina, I have the Conti-trainer tire that I used when I had my Kurt Kinetic trainer.  It worked really well, as initially, I would find little bits of rubber all over the wall behind me!  Also, undo the resistance when you are done riding...and check tires before you start...probably good idea for outdoors, too!

Scott- I think the idea of running the first 20 with your friends sounds like an excellent decision...that's a pretty big jump from 18 to 26.2 unless you are doing some planned walking...even at a slower pace, with the injury history, it could set off your ITB, which would suck big time.  I will have to look at my logs but I think when I went from 16.5 to 21 as my long run, it was too much of an increase for me with the heel thing...in retrospect, should have kept it closer to 18-19, because my foot was not happy after that 21. (felt pretty good during...I will add).

Agree, especially if the ultra group will be running on trails and you're used to running on the road (don't know if that's the case). Have fun!

mighty mom - 2012-01-26 8:28 AM

Can you guys help me figure this out?  I went to get on the bike this morning and noticed my rear wheel was flat.  (Ahhh... now I realize why the sudden change in tension 2 minutes from the end of my ride on Sat.)  I tried using my new mini-pump (same as kyla's) with no response so I ended up changing the tube.  ok, fine.  Afterwards, I grabbed the old tube and it now appeared to be ok.  It had air and with a quick inspection (bc I was running late) it didn't appear to have a hole.  Is that possible?  This was at 4:45 am (pre-coffee) and again first time using the mini-pump so its possible I didn't have a good  fit bw the valve and the pump.

Also, any tricks to minimize the amount of flats I get on the trainer?  How do you set your tension?  Been searching the boards and it looks like I might need rim tape (don't remember seeing any).  Is this something I can do, or should I have someone else do it/teach me?

About trainer to tire pressure or tension -- I set mine like this on my CycleOps Fluid 2:
1)  Check air pressure and inflate rear tube as required.

2)  I hold down the trainer by placing a foot on top

3)  I grab the rear wheel just above the trainer and very quickly pull up/jerk up on the wheel, it will slip only about 1 - 2 inches then the trainer grabs the tire and spins with the wheel.

4)  Tighten or loosen the tension to achieve this result.

You can crank the tension down where there is no slip at all -- too tight causing excess tire heat and/or tire wear.
Too much slip, and you will likely feel it while you spin hard intervals.

Edit: I also use a Vittoria trainer specific tire - it doesn't shed rubber or heat up at all.

I have a Conti trainer tire that I put on my powertap wheel at the beginning of November.  My bike will be on the trainer until at least April and possibly May.   My floor pump is nearby and I use before each and every trainer ride to keep the tire pressure consistent (not because I am getting flats).   It is definitely a good idea to make sure you can use that mini-pump, but try it when you have some spare time.

edit: none of my training happens "pre-coffee"

Thanks guys.  Performance bike has that trainer tire for even less and I know someone who probably has an extra wheel I can get set up.  Most years I think just switching out the tire on my current wheel would be fine but this yr the weather here has been crazy.  One day upper 50s and sunny, the next day in the teens with snow.

The various Cobb saddles (not to be confused with Cobb salads) seem to be very popular these days.

I have just started using a Cobb Max Flow saddle on my road bike that is set up on my CT. So far so good. I think I need to tweak the angle a little more and lower the front, but otherwise it has been good for the three rides I have completed on it.

***********equipment question***********

Not that I NEED a new watch, but here's the situation.  I have a Garmin 305 that originally worked great as my bike/run computer.  We have evolved in our equipment accumulation that I am interested in just a running watch.  I mainly track distance and speed.  I want something less bulky than the 305.  Any recommendations?

P.S.  I'm willing to give up the double watch look.

I've been riding the Adamo since I got it from Andy. It took a bit of tweaking but was pretty decent for the 3 years.

Not that I want to mess with success, but man those are expensive to buy new.

This is a can of worms opening... but  Cobb vs Adamo?

I'll be curious to see what the responses are. I am currently looking at the Garmin FR 110 for my husband, who "only" runs.

Simultaneously trying to figure out how I could justify a 910xt, but really, there just isn't a way... yet!!

Nope! Just getting the kids ready for school!!

Sadly, Cougar was not run-worthy this week. With all of the snow we had, then an ice storm, then high winds, it's a slushy mess with tons of downed trees and branches. Maybe we can scramble through it next week, I sure hope so. As steep as the hills are, I miss it when I can't get out there!!!

Fit preference I suppose.  Cobb does have a 90 day return policy (I think it's 90 days) so you could always try it out and return it if you don't like it.

If you liked the Adamo and could do an IM "comfortably" on one I would probably stick with that.
