This is going to be a crazy busy week at work and will require heavy doses of HTFU to get in all my training...

I’ll be getting into the HTFU soon with an increase in intensity.  I can’t wait……

The most I've raced in one season is 4 races...did it in my first two seasons...then only raced 3 times in 2011 and also did a tri relay.

I would like to be able to 1) afford to race more (which includes travel) and 2) not be limited to just a 4-month window where it is feasible to race. Ideally, I would like to be able to try 6-7 races in a season and see if I like racing that much. In my mind, 2 HIM, 2 OLY and 2-3 sprints would be a good schedule.

You bring up a good point.  I would race more if I could afford it.

Back in the 80’ I could race tri’s, runs or cycling for $15-$30 on average.  Longer races like HIM’s I could race for $50-$60.  The other thing I could do several race a week year round all within a 1-1.5hr drive.  It was nice.

Patience

Yeah I know.  Tonights run was a little faster than I wanted.  Um.... I forgot.

I race about 10-12 times per year.  This is starting in February or even January with runs, moving to tris March through August, then swims July - September, then runs Nov - Dec.  Looking at my race log, most I did was 16 in a year, least was 2009 when I got sick and did 4 events.

It's only about 3-4 tris per year though.  I'll also do 4-5 runs 5K to 13.1 as well as a few OW swims.   I try to find all the races I want to do, space them out, then winnow them down as reality sets in and I have to start paying $$$

Obviously with that many, I am training through lots of them.  Many are last minute decisions to do with friends.  Only a couple "A" races.  And I like the odd races like the Alcatraz Challenge, things that are more "experiences" than anything else,  still hoping to do SOS some day

That's great you can do that many races Chris.

A short am run and CT ride in the afternoon for me today.

So my training seems to be going well.  I am looking for some open advice.  I am at a point soon I need to decide if to;  A) Keep my training the same with volume and intensity.  B) Up my intensity to get ready for my 10 miler (Apr 1) and first tri race (Sprint, May 16).  C) Up my volume and intensity to see how it goes, getting ready for all.

Let me know what you think.   Thank you.

Another “Flip Turn” thread struck.  This one is absolutely hysterical.   Elaine will probable pull her hair out..........

It must be the full moon! All of the crazies are out!!!

If you do open turns during a pool tri, I will flip turn and push off of you if you get in my way.

The CF thread actually has some decent content. jimmy3993 is in my other mentor group, and it's pretty fascinating to follow someone who is actually doing endurance (3 weeks out from a marathon!) and crossfit. I'm glad he chimed in. His blog is interesting, too, because he talks about needing to strike the balance between CF and Tri. It's a good read!

He also just messed up his shin doing box jumps and missed his 22 miler this past weekend... That is why I stopped doing anything that could hurt me a like 4-6 weeks out from the marathon!

My early 4-miler is in the books for today. A rare single workout day, so that is nice. Unfortunately, it's basketball game night, so just enough time after work to make a quick dinner before doing the broadcast. Luckily it's an earlier game; hopefully it also means getting home and in bed earlier, too.

Chris, Kim, Bryan- great job on your races this past weekend. Watching you guys race makes me want to do this even more. If I could I'd line up a race every month and have 2 to 3 main races in a calendar year. Since I work in the service industry and most golfers come out on the weekends, it makes it impossible to do many, if any.. a race. Two years ago I think I did 2 sprints and a full. Last year only 1 race??.

James- When Fred told you to be patient, all I kept thinking was how hard it must be to hold back and not let it go; just like holding a greyhound back and not letting go of the leash. More so like not being able to hit my driver but settling for a wedge.

I have a run scbduled for today and might venture out for a ride outdoors as temperatures might hit 50. Have a great day everyone.

I would not up both at the same time. I would consider doing 1-2 higher intensity bike sessions or swim a week, don't raise volume at same time as too much training stress.

Agree.  Raise either volume or intensity but not both at the same time.

Yesterday I left home for work at 6:30 am and got home at 9:00 pm!  Ended up getting a very nice project close to home so happy about that.  I decided to sleep in this morning so going to swim at noon and then hopefully get a 6-8 mile run before I pick up the peanut.  Legs feel almost fully recovered from the weekend shenanigans.

Just got an email they added a new trail race 10K or 10 mile at the end of March just 20 minutes away so I got that on my radar now.  This one will be pretty flat though along a river so it won't blow up my legs like the last one.

Question...

What are some of your favorite healty(ish) meals?

One of the things I have gotten hooked on lately are various types of stuffed baked potatoes.

Last night I did a BBQ baked potato with some shredded BBQ beef and light ranch dressing.

I also do a fajita chicken potato...with some diced fajita chicken topped with tomatoes, cilantro and jalapeno...and a little light ranch dressing.

But my new favorite potato is the pizza potato. I bake a potato, then add 1/4c of marinara, slice of provolone on top of that, then a few slices of lean pepperoni and broil until the cheese is melted. Very easy to prep...and very tasty!

Actually they are. I get them to about 300 calories using leaner meat and other light options. I also like to de-construct items on restaurant menus and make my own health versions when I can. Cuts down on cravings and usually tastes better anyway.

I don't think Bryan was speaking calories when he was staying they were not healthy.  I agree with him that they are not that healthy (but there is way worse to eat).  It could be a good lunch that will sit nice in your stomach if you had a long workout session shortly after maybe.  But there is little nutritional value in the meal itself.

ETA: one of my go to lunches that I eat when I want something healthy, filling, but low in calories is a good old salad.  I use lettuce, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and any other veggie that seems appealing, plus a good quality salad dressing.  One that is not light, cause those are never quality.  But one that uses only ingredients that I would find in one I make at home, and doesn't have water as the main ingredient.  I top it with a nice lean meat like chicken.  No cheese, no croutons.

I keep suppers really simple most times.  BBQ some form of meat, grill some kind of veggie.  Sometimes a sweet potato, sometimes not.  I'll from time to time get more creative, like tomorrow I am making a Thai Chicken Noodle dish, but simple works best for me.

Thanks all, and congrats Kim!!!!

Have a question re aerobar bottle placement.  I bought the frame speedfil then went ahead and bought the A2 aerobar bottle as I had a GC to a tri shop.  I have ski bends so could never really mount the bottle up front until now as I wouldn't be able to get it out of the cage.  The question is where to put the A2.  Originally I thought about a cage zip tied to the stem, but that seems very high up, and is at an angle as my stem slopes back down towards me.  For yesterday's ride I simply reseted it between the aero bars and then secured it with an old chip stap and a velcro strap, valve toward me so the flat end of the bottle was sticking out just at the bottom of the upturned bars.  I am assuming this is not very aero, since the bottle is not behind my arms mounted this way and the flat end is out in the wind.  But being on the stem is seems so high?

Thoughts?  I can post pics later if needed.  I really like the concept and it made drinking much easier for me.  Just need to work out the details

I'd love to be able to have the cool straight bar look and just mount the bottle on top of the aerobar extensions but I tried those bars and they were just too uncomfortable.  Speaking of which, anyone want to buy a barely used Planet X carbon aero bar?

quick bump, thoughts on aerobar bottle setup?

Hey guys! sorry, i've been MIA for a couple of days.  Played floor hockey last night which is great fun and a good sweaty workout.  I got the craziest bruise on my thigh last week after taking a pass on the leg so the team go to see.  I did weenie out on a run. I was tired and didn't pack properly thinking i'd run at lunch and forgot a long sleeve shirt - which even though it was warm out it was not warm enough to head out in short sleeves.

But this morning I was back up and at 'em on the trainer for a nice little sweatfest. Will do some ST tonight.

As for recipes - I LOVE to cook!

In 2010 my hubby had his bad cholesterol creeping up so we did a bunch of nutritional things to see if we could control it since he didn't want to go on pills in his mid-30's.  So, we cut out a lot of cheese and fattier meats.  We will do vegetarian meals a lot.  We also love the not so good for you but try to limit that more.

some of my favourites (both veg and non-veg) are:

- Salad of Roasted vegetables on kale - with a lemon vinaigrette and a little goat cheese

- Grilled pizza - we just moved to a house so we can bbq (grill) and this is by far my favourite one to do! There are a couple of topping combos i got from a cooking magazine that just awesome and really not too terrible

- chipotle sweet potato soup

- chicken meatball soup with gnocchi (as the dumplings)

(If you want links I'd be happy to post them)

It's making me hungry just thinking about them - and i could just go on and on.

I'm actually trying out a service called Relish.

https://www.relishrelish.com/

Every week, they give you new recipes. You pick the ones you want to cook, and it creates a pdf of your shopping list and recipes. At $7 a month, it's pretty cheap. There are sample recipes on the site if you're interested. They seem (mostly) well-balanced.

I'm also a crock pot junkie - and there are LOTS of good options out there. http://crockpot.betterrecipes.com/hearty-sweet-potato-and-french-lentil-stew.html and http://crockpotcooking.tribe.net/thread/b61f6a68-206f-4ead-8210-eb0d3bbaaa64 are favorites.
