One more question... where do we find the DNF% from 2011 to 2012. I'm wondering if this year was harder than last year. |

Extreme Veteran 930 Fort Worth, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Well, back in D/FW after the IM - it was great to be home. I had a great time while down in the Woodlands - we were really blown away with how nice the area surrounding the check-in/finish was - we'll go back when we can play and have a drink. I enjoyed the course. Riding in Fort Worth we encounter constant wind and chip seal roads, so the roads down there felt like glass (especially in Montgomery County). My favorite part was going through the National Forest - it felt like we were riding in Austria, not Texas. The other two portions of the course - swim/run - were about what I thought they'd be. The swim was pretty congested for 90% of my time in the water. I found open water once, but then I looked up and realized why - I was off course a good 40 yards. It took me a little while to angle my way back in, but I was able to do so without having to cut 90 degrees straight back. The canal was interesting. Now I know what salmon swimming upstream feel like - I kept waiting for the bears to snatch a few of us out. Not sure how I feel about the people I saw walking in the canal; I am ok with it if they had to walk to deal with claustrophobia in the tight quarters of the canal, but I am not ok with it if they did it to be easier physically. Nonetheless, I believe that they had the legal right to do so as long as the water was above their knees. On the run - I enjoyed most of the course, but for some unknown reason I hated the section where you left the canal and went through a small trail to the next to last aid station. I have no idea what made me dislike this section, but in my tired thinking I couldn't get excited during that stretch. The volunteers were exceptionally nice there - as on every portion of the entire course. I just seemed to go into a poor mood each time through there. My son found me on mile 24 and then ran alongside me on the last mile until the finish divider came up. Having him run with me at the very end (he's 13) made my entire day. I know if wasn't approved by WTC, but it meant the world to me to know that he will always be there for me at the end. Several people commented on it, so I am proud to know that they saw it for what it was - love. In the end, there was a surge of energy like I've never encountered - I high-five d every hand I could reach going down the chutes. If you've never been down the Ironman finish chutes - well, let me tell you, you need to do it and you need to feel that feeling...not the feeling of "thank God it's over," but the feeling of love and excitement from all of the strangers lining the chutes and holding out there hands and yelling for you...it gives me tears and chills today just thinking about it. It was beautiful. Mike Reilly calling out my name was all I had hoped for - and for those who've wondered about my name on here (Sul Ross) - it is the name of my college/alma mater - and if you saw me finish I am carrying a Sul Ross pennant above my head at the finish line. We are a small university and I wanted to show other grads that we have an Ironman in the family! I would imagine I am not the first one My wife, son and family were great - they helped with everything. My best friend who lives in Houston was there for every step - I will do a half with him in Austin in October. He was aces on support, as was my team mate from Trident Sports in Fort Worth - Jack. The one thing I decided as I was leaving the course was this: I will go back next year to support someone else and to see what it was like from the other side - I want to savor it that way and be one of those crazy excited smiling faces holding out a hand at the finish and high-fiving and cheering on others! For my fellow racers this go-round - great effort - whether you got the finish or didn't - you toed the line and that was what mattered most... |

I'll do another one just to hear thousands of people I don't know cheer for me at the end...WHAT A FEELING! I had a little happy cry for myself in the medical tent about what I was able to do. So incredible. I could care less about my time it was a journey not a destination. I think anyone who got in that water and started that race is a champion in my book!! Congratulations to all who finished!!! |

Well, I reached one goal (sub 11:00), but missed the second (KQ). I am moving and starting a new job in the next few weeks. I am not sure I can train for Louisville how I will want/need to train to KQ. Maybe next year I will be back for number 8 and to reach my goal. Congrats on sub 11! Those girls were FAST if sub 11:00 didn't do it! Of course you know what your coach will say.... use a HR monitor and get a power meter. |

Still here in the Woodlands til morning when I fly back and reality hits HARD but have been pondering the same thing for over 24 hrs. It hasn't hit me yet what to do next. Not sure what direction to head into next. Back home in Michigan it is just coming into tri season but have contemplated going back to running marathons for the rest of the year and get back my run fitness that has dissappeared for the last 6 yrs. I am sure it will hit me soon and the direction will be clear, until then I think it is time for dinner and maybe a few slushy drinks |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread I posted on the watching thread but I DNF'd off the bike at mile 95ish aide station. I didn't drink enough early on the bike and the heat got me fast and furious. The reality is I knew DNF was a real possiblity and it was a training day for IMFL at best for me. Grossly undertrained. My life just got in the way this spring. I have no regrets about pulling out. I am most undertrained on the run and on my best day I am a lousy runner. There is no way I would have pulled it out and I was on the verge of heat stroke (per my doctor BF who deals with this stuff although I am not convinced I was that sick) Congrats to everyone who toed the line!!! Onward and upward to IMFL training!! |

Expert 989 Broomfield, CO | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Red, Not to make excuses but I had a bad day starting with the swim. I didn't have a great day in the saddle and it only got worse for me on the run. At this point I'm happy with the mental toughness to keeping moving forward and finish. I'll do another IM to improve my time. I just didn't have it on Saturday, I never got out of the funk I got into on the swim. I think I sabotaged myself with my nutrition too. My stomach cramped and I puked at mile 80 while riding, not fun. Then I never ate again and only barely managed to keep down coke and water on the run/walk. But I'll say this crossing the finish line was an awesome and emotional experience. Only my marriage, the birth of my children and the love of my parents come close to that feeling I had. Total cry baby afterwards, to be honest if felt good to let the months of training and the race go with a couple of tears :-) |

Expert 1274 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Overall I had a blast of a race even though it was HOT and LONG and NOTHING seemed to really go as planned. Swim was fine, just slower than planned by a good 15 min (1:59). Bike I cramped for the first 60 miles because I swallowed a ton of air while swimming, legs felt great though. Nutrition plan also went completely out the window on the bike! After SN my belly felt better but then I was physically exhausted. I loved the run course even though I ended up walking 85% of the marathon. To me, it was awesome having the crowd support along the canal but then equally as great having some quiet and alone time on the back half of the loop. When I hit the finish shoot I was just glad to finally be done! Crossed the line at 16:36:12 high 5'ing every one in sight! I swore up and down during the marathon that this was the dumbest thing that I had ever decided to do and I would NEVER do one again. I met a guy on the run who was on his 31st IM and he told me to give it 3 weeks before I decided I really never wanted to do another. Well, 3 days later now and I already want to do it again. I will wait at least 5 years though since my wife would probably kill me and tell God I died if I tried to sign up for another any time soon! Congrats to everyone out there wether you finished or not. It was HOT day and it took a lot just to get to the start! |

My friend was vomiting as well. My stomach started feeling queasy at mile 80 on the bike. I had the same thing happen in Kentucky in 2008. So I backed off my nutrition, kept on the water, and made sure I didn't vomit. My run was a completey suck-suffer-fest. MISERABLE. I had MANY moments past mile 13 ish where I wasn't sure I was going to be able to go on. I can't believe I finished! Sounds like you had a nice finish! Congrats! |

I relaxed on the swim and made a decision around mile 70 on the bike to preserve myself for the run. It worked well because I actually ran great(for me). I'll be back for more punishment. I need to find a better way to manage my kids because 2 nights in a hotel with 4 kids under 5 isn't a great way to prep for a race.I was amazed by the support from the crowd and fellow racers. Don't get me wrong I worked for 2 yrs for this race but all my training was shorter then a normal training program. I had to do very intense rides, hilly and hard. I really think my best asset was heat tolerance. Also, I took ginger all day to help with nausea. It's pure magic for me. Other than a brief period out near Richards my stomach was fine. I did however start thinking of a way to make a graceful exit after thinking "I have to run a marathon now?"alove - 2012-05-22 2:50 PMI rolled in at 13:50, my 1st IM.
