I agree on the noise. That ticks me off - we're trying to chill in our own house and someone rides by on a mobile earthquake so loud we can't even hear each other. Why on earth is that allowed?

That's why I wear a helmet.....

Yeah, stats...  What do they REALLY say?  That my odds are more likely to die on a motorcyle than of a heart attack while running.  So?

Stats tell me that I will die in a car more likely than a plane.  But I drive.  Just because something is "more likely" to happen, doesn't mean that it will.

I'm more likely to die riding my MTN bike that sitting on the couch....  So.

There is risk in just about everything we do in life.  Some more than others.  I could drown while swimming, riding a tri bike, ski diving, kayaking, skiing, snowboarding.  I'm as carefull as I can be doing all of these things - as well as riding my motorcycle.

It's my choice to take the risk for the enjoyment, just like anything else in life.  That's it.

chadtower - 2008-06-18 10:35 AM Helmets are good but don't do a whole lot except protect you on minor incidents, frankly. My uncle's helmet saved his head. All that did was enable him to live in agony for a week rather than die instantly. My father's helmet probably did save his life but obviously didn't save his leg.

My buddy lost his leg in a motorcycle crash, too. Still rides with the fake one. It's very unfortunate, but it happens.

My Dad's younger brother was a crazy man when he was young. Everyone in my family rides. There is a picture of him when he was 20 or so. He had just had an acccident (of his own doing, probably) and his leg was in a full cast. There is a picture of him riding his bike with his "gang" and he has his casted leg up on the handlebars. Dumb a$$.

hahahahaha, sheesh. I would ride again if I wrecked, but I'd at LEAST wait til I got my cast off....

Have any of you guys seen the movie On Any Sunday? It's from the 70's, has Steve McQueen in it.  All about riding.  Shows what some of those guys did to keep on the track.  Cutting off casts, bandanas to absorb blood from broken noses.  Racing with open face helmets, jeans, and work gloves.  Seems crazy when you've only seen modern MotoGP.

I LOVE that movie.  Love love love.

Dust to Glory is another awesome one.  About the Baja 1000.

My two cents on motorcycles...

a) most are unnecessarily noisy. i *hate* Harleys. Its noise pollution, plain and simple for the sake of showing off your small wang, IMHO.

b) most people around here that ride motorcycles ride them dangerously and aggressively, so if they end up in the organ donor banks, its probably their own fault.

c) I do see motorcylists that ride defensively and safely, but it seems to be the exception to the rule.

d) there should be enforced standards on motorcycle noise - just as there should be laws enforcing overtly loud car stereos and engines. Its startling and dangerous to traffic. There's no reason for any vehicle to be 'loud' in any manner for the sake of being loud.

I have to agree on the noise. I can't stand it. My little gs500 is about as quiet as motorcycles get. I do ride a bit faster than I should, but I'm drive very defensively. If I get hurt, theres a 99% chance it won't be my fault. Its dangerous, no doubt. But its fun and it doubles my gas milage, so its worth the risk for me.

I don't like the belt driven, really loud Harley's either, but the thing that bothers me is the kid in the SUV with the bass speakers that are so loud that it makes my car vibrate and gives me a concussion headache.  Seriously, how loud is it in that vehicle.  That's just stupid.

Yeah, but you can't hear that kid for a mile in every direction. I can hear the Harleys for a mile before my house to a mile after my house. And he can turn his stereo down when he gets into a residential area. Can't quiet that Harley.

I've been in those vehicles. The hair on your arms stand up, and don't even think about talking to anyone. My first roommate in college had a Grand Cherokee with four 12 inch speakers. So dumb.

Since I ride, I guess I am a little more tolerant.  I have an aftermarke exhaust as well, so it's a little louder than the stock, but not bad at all.  I just think sportbikes are quiter in general than the big V-twins with short pipes and no muffler.

What SCREAMS "look at me" is when leaving a bar I frequent, harley riders need to sit on the bike in front of the patio and rev the bike over and over - they just look at the patio to see who is looking at them, and then scream off.  I'm sorry, in the desert, the bike almost ALWAYS stays warm enough to just start up and idle for maybe a minute and then you can just pull away calmly....

ALSO, if you bike is tuned correctly, you don't need to rev it up and down at every freak'n intersection.  To me that's just showoff, childish, wastes gas, isn't as "green" - well, stupid IMO.

ANYWAY, who else sneaks into movies?  The wife and I did that over the weekend (it's been a while since we did that last).  We just left Zohan, and saw that Kung Fu Panda was starting in 10 minutes.  So we walked in.  It was fun.....

I can't sit for that long. I can hardly make it through one movie at the theaters, theres no way I could get two in. Especially with the quality of movies lately. Although I might have to go see the Zohan movie...

But it's STILL cool (at least in their mind).

I have been disapointed over the last couple years.  Everything that looks promising, is usually a bust.  I even saw most of last years Best Picture nominations and really didn't like all but one/two of them.

Zonhan is good.  Just know what you are getting into - it's Adam Sandler for pete's sake.  but it WAS funny.

I saw Zohan this weekend. That movie needed to be about 40 minutes shorter. It had its moments but way too many "why am I watching this" scenes.

I used to sneak in to every movie released in high school... was good friends with one of the girls that worked at a tiny theater by my house. She let me in every single time.

Yep. There isn't much to tolerate when I'm playing whiffle ball with my kids in the yard and we can't hear each other for a full minute because 5 Harleys are coming down the road.
