One question: Why is the distance of the race in kilometers and the altitude is in feet? 125 km, and 17,000 feet of elevation change. If you are going to take such pride in the metric system then at least use it consistantly! Wink

If we used it consistently how would we screw you up.   Just for you I'll do the conversion. 17,000 feet is about 5181 meters.

Who cares about that.  What is it in MILES!!!!

1600 m = 1 mile. Therefore, 5181 m = 324 miles

I am helping my 12 year old daughter with math and we are doing percentages, fractions and decimals, and you would fail my friend! 3.238 miles! Dont feel bad her teacher messed it up to and she's American! Tell you what to make it up to us Americans in the group  mail us each a six pack of Brador!

Ha! Kim -- there's a great iphone app called Convert (I think). I love it -- use it for all sorts of random things (usually baking). It would come in very handy for you right about now!

SSMinnow - 2011-01-12 12:58 PM All this talk about a relay sounds FUN!  Are there any that are not in season?  the thought of traveling without my bike is highly appealing....of course, the bod needs to cooperate!

Good luck Glen.  Strategy?

This one is not as long as some of the ones already mention but it looks like fun.  Our tri group is talking about doing this and have the support vehicle be a group of bikes (you get extra points for having environmentally friendly transportation between legs).

Glen, have you ever done Musselman?  It has been on my radar for 2 years.

Linda

George, you need to add your name to the bottom of you postings so the rest of the MG can tell us apart.  Smile

This group is fast moving today.....doing real work today (well, paper work anyway) and every time I check in....there are another couple of full pages....geez, how do you all make a living and keep up here????

Anyway, Suzy asked earlier about my strategy for the race on Sunday.  I am keeping it simple as we discussed a couple of weeks ago....go out strong in mid to high Z3 til mile 11 and if all is going well, going all out to the finish.  This the race I have been focused on since finishing my last triathlon in 2010 (in September).

Wow....haven't had one of those in about 30 years.  Glad to see that they're still around.   Back then, the nickname for them was "high test".

By the way, I grew up south of Buffalo (less than an hour drive from Canada).  They would only close the schools based on a forecast if there was already 3 feet of snow on the ground and the lake effect weather system was not moving.

You trail-runner types - tell me about trail shoes.  I am planning on a trail run this year and would like to get a H20-proof pair for running in snow/rain/uckky conditions...  I saw these and they seem good, but how does the fit work?  Is it just like road shoes - neutrual, prontation, etc.

i run in these.   really like em'.

i don't like socks below the ankle on trails, to much crap gets in my normal low cut running socks, balega's.  i tried a pair of wrightsocks on sunday's run...didn't like them.

Always late to the game, but there are a ton of good shoe's out there....

I think that you will find the problem with Salomon is in the arch- Be prepared for a gnarly blister the size of Canada on your arch after a longer run (ASK RP---- We both went through it, and know several others who have gone through it)....

This is the best Goretex shoe all around both in weight, and "breathability"

For a non Goretex built to last an my go-to shoe this is a must shoe to have..... You can find them pretty cheap if you shop around (REI has them on clearance right now...)

I am currently sporting these, and feel ook with them.... Running Out in the snow last night they felt pretty good....

Steve, have you tried those (best Gortex)? They have this lacing system... a friend with whom I do field training has this on his boots and I've always marveled over it and said they should incorporate it into running shoes. And voila! There it is!! Curious why it's not used more often and what you think of it. I've never WORN shoes with this system, but I did poke around with this guy's boots one day because I was so fascinated by it. (What a loser I am, huh? Out in the field with great people and awesome dogs and I'm geeking out on lacing systems!) Ha!!!

specialized has a similar (i think) system on the s-works.  i tried a pair this past sunday and yeah,  they are comfortable because you can dial it in and it seemed very simple to use.  however,  i just could not get over the feeling of the wire or whatever it is not being substantial enough.  also have a hard time with the dials, they just seemed a bit, dunno,  dainty maybe.  clearly the price isn't very good either.

edit.  i haven't tried one the ones steve rec's.  and some people don't break things as well as i do.

That type of lacing system is used on snowboard boots.  You really crank those down tight and I have never seen anyone have a problem with it (I have only used a couple of times).  I don't think durability would be a problem.  Comfort factor might though...especially if the tongue of the shoe moves over a bit and you have that wire digging in...

good luck racers,  nada here.   stuck home again today.

started the new year off with another bike fit.  so far the changes are great.  new saddle coming on the way, a cobb shc170.  a bit thinner up front to hopefully get rid of some chaffing issues going on.

I got one of these last Oct and put it on once I moved my bike inside onto the trainer.  I'm liking it so far.

Back amongst the living sort of. Finally back home.

Brought the Flu back from Disney, woo hoo!  My daughter ended up missing her Bippity Boppity Boo appointment and lunch with Cinderella at the castle since she got it also, my son picked it up last but now we're one happy germy family...

LOL, I was coughing the first full day we were there so I figured it was allergies.  Didn't have a fever or anything so I didn't think anything of it.   We went to dinner and during I started not feeling well, and pretty much was in bed the rest of the trip.

At least we go to Disney every year so not like we won't be back in 7-8 months I guess.

Suzy, yes everyone wears their medals around Disney for a few days after the race.  At dinner that night you saw 1/2, full and goofy medals at most tables.  People wear them to the parks also.  That's what made us want to do it.  A couple of years ago we saw people walking around the parks wearing them right after the race and Sam said she wanted a Goofy medal for her Disney pin lanyard.

http://www.asiorders.com/view_user_event_video.asp?EVENTID=74488&BIB=7100&S=230&PWD=

Here are the pictures from the marathon, they had official photographers at the majority of the characters, but we have even more on our camera.  And yes we were cheesy and held hands crossing the finish line.

Quite a different experience from any other race.  Every other person we talked to that was doing the Goofy challenge was doing the exact same as us, stroll through the half, and then have a great time in the Marathon taking in all the sights.  There was more entertainment every mile than anything else I have seen.  Tons and tons of spectators.  I highly recommend it if you want to have fun.

Only thing is how early you have to be up.  We were staying on resort and still got up at 2:50 and 3:00,  They wanted you in the corrals by 4:30 or something like that, I think it was still dark at about mile 9 or 10 of both races, crazy early.

Off work at least tomorrow, need to see what the contagious(sp?) period is for this, so will try to catch up and get back to my serious posting ways.  I am taking about 2 weeks off to let my body completely heal, Knee issues, Bronchitis, Flu, etc need to all be gone before I get started.

definitely.  or maybe even once that tongue wears down and gets a little thinner.  i'd think you'd put a lot more pressure on the top of your foot snowboarding (turning?) then on the bike.

My Lake shoes have the Boa system, I think Boa must have the patent on it or something, since both Specialized and Lake call it Boa.  It's pretty nice.  I use them as tri-shoes.  easy to spin the dial to tighten while riding, and just pull out on the button and they are ready to take off.

The stock saddle on my bike was a San Marco Ponza.   My butt was really sore after about 30 minutes on the trainer on that saddle.  I'm currently up to about 80 minutes max on the cobb and it has become a lot more comfortable.   It did hurt at 30 minutes for the first few weeks, but seems to have broken in after that.

finally she slowed enough for a decent pic.  congrats on the win sam!

edit. LOVE THE BRAIDS!!!!!

Agree on all accounts, I had to ask her to slow down a few times.

And I like the braids also.

LOVE THE PICS and the braids!  All I saw on the link you sent was the finish line video.

Glad to hear the family is back amongst the living.  Think taking some time off is a great idea.  You'll be healthy and hungry to start training again.

What a novel thing to do, a race just for fun.  I used to do that, maybe I need to try it again

On Sunday it was pretty chilly, I might have been able to take the jacket off about mile 20 but by then it seemed like too much work : )

Heading to bed now but I'll post some pic's from our camera tomorrow.

OK, that race (those races) just look like a buncha fun. Was telling hubs about them the other day... maybe we'll put that on our to-do list.

So what did you do with the kids while you were running?

Welcome home, congratulations, and feel better, Tony!! Awesome job to you, too, Sam! And yeah, love the braids too!!!

Happy food moment today.  Starving at 3pm...looked at the box of fig newtons but remembered I had brought:

Chobani Greek Yogurt strawberry flavor for a snack!  Yay.  Laughing

what other snacks do people bring to work (i know suzy likes her little egg sandwich but not all of us work from home!)
