TSimone - 2012-08-31 4:45 AM Anyone racing this weekend?

Last race of the season for me is a 112 mile road race around Oahu.

On a sad note though, our team's strongest rider (who regularly contends for the overall win) got in a bad accident yesterday.  I don't know all the details, but something like he got run off the road and hit a pole.  A bunch of broken bones and a lacerated lung.  Going to visit him at the hospital after work.

Ride safe everyone.

Have a great race Jason!

That sucks.  Hoping for a full recovery.

Oh no. Let us know how he's doing ... my prayers are with him for a smooth recovery.

As for you ... go gettem Tiger.

He's doing "okay".  About as good as you can be with 6 broken ribs, broken collar bone, and shoulder blade...all while having a tube stuck in your chest to drain blood and fluid.  He should make a full recovery, but you can imagine the discomfort and pain he's in right now.

Turns out that while a car was approaching from behind, it was still his fault (by his own admission) as he looked back he hit a pot hole, lost control into the curb, then went over his handlebars into the light pole.  The driver stopped to provide aid and call 911.

TankBoy - 2012-08-31 6:55 PM Awesome Stavros - good luck - you are going to do great! All eyes will be on you this weekend - hopefully you will be finished up just as those of us in North America are waking up. The Wild Boar sounds like my kind of race: 9:30am start and wetsuit REQUIRED. Must be already getting cool there? I have never done a 4-loop bike - that will sure make it spectator friendly! Have fun - you gotta know we will all be rooting (that's a pun!) for you.

The weather has been really random this year, but it looks like it will start at around 15c and go up to 19c and be fairly overcast all day, which is just the way I like it .

TSimone - 2012-08-31 7:12 PM Good luck Stavros! And yes, we will track you like an ST witch hunt.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is going to be any way to actually track people during this race.

Short run for me this afternoon, too darn windy to go riding though.  I plan on a ride tomorrow once the wind dies down a bit, somewhere in the 1-2 hour range depending on how I feel.

Savageman training time!  6 days post Oly Tri and feeling ok maybe a little fatigue.

Rode 60 miles with 4400ft of climbing and it was 90° out.

whew......that was a tough ride for me today.  The last big climb was brutal and was not good form.  I probable deserved every bit of it with the lack of riding and Tri last weekend.

Sounds about the same as mine. 78km with 5000ish feet climbing. Felt good. But it was nice and cool.

Then did some OWS. Felt good.

I may do a HIM next week.

Fred D - 2012-09-01 12:28 PM Had a brief ride today and then riding longer tomorrow. What's on for training for those not racing?

Taking some time off to hopefully get healthy.  Probably a good time to focus on eating better.  I'm mentally pretty good even just 1 week out from IM.  But I really need to rest up and give the lungs some time off.

I'm tentatively planning a swim heavy offseason, once the chest feels good.

After last week's debacle of a ride where I openly whined about how bad it was, I had the complete opposite today.  80km ride @ ~ 87%.  Power just seemed to come easy today, and really gave me a boost.  I've been feeling tierd and lethargic all week, and even took a 20min nap before the ride, but then it all came together.  Last "long" run tomorrow - thinking 12-13km, this sound about right?

Hope I didn't peak a week early..Laughing

I am home and I am still alive!

Brief run down as I'm about to go out and get fed!!

I had 3 targets for this race:

1. Finish

2. Finish under 6:30

3. Run all of the run.

Seems point 2 was WAY too generous as I finished in 5:27:34, but unfortunately I failed goal 3 as I had to wall a couple of the really steep hills around mile 11.

Really big thanks to you lot for helping me get through this race

I've been really ill again ... just a worse continuation of last week's illness, I think. I finally went to a doc (I don't go until I'm in such bad shape that I CAN barely go, I'm just an idiot that way) and two days later the antibiotics and steroids have kicked in (multiple resp infections) and I do feel much better, but I'm trying to take the wise path and still take it easy for a few days. Still had some fever today, in any case.

Ya. But if I do it, I want to do it differently. I may experiment with a few things.

What experiments?

Mostly nutrition, some pacing

As a diabetic I struggle with my nutrition. I want to try some things that may result in lows so I need to be prepared if this happens.

Also pace differently. I usually swim easy. I am thinking of going out hard.

Bike I usually start hard. I may do 20-30 minutes easier

Smoother run.

Awesome, way to crush your time goal!  I think #3 can be easily forgiven based on that.

Went for my second ride post IM this morning.  Out for about 1.5 hours and my only real plan was to hit one Strava segment hard to see what I could do with it.  It's a 6.1 km stretch of road that is relatively flat, just some gentle rollers but nothing to really kill (or generate) a lot of speed.  I managed to grab the KOM by ~20 seconds (not too many on Strava here) going 283w for just under 9 mins.  Didn't think I would be able to hold that high of wattage for that long after the long IM type of stuff.  I'm hopeful that means I won't have to do a whole lot to get my FTP back where it was at the end of the winter!
