I had a very disappointing ride today, started with rain and high winds with debris all over the roads leading to slow speeds then 3 flats resulting in me having to call to be picked up 40 mins short of my planned 6 hours. The last 2 hours I was battling with a leaking tyre and had to keep pumping it back up before it finally blew! Anyway, I've done 4 rides over 5 hours but not managed to do my near race distance ride. Next weeks a recovery week and my legs feel like they need it but the way today's ride fizzled out left me feeling very frustrated. That ride gave you more than you know. Think of it as building more mental toughness and call upon when you feel like garbage during IM. I had a similar ride last year-heavy rain, wind and cold for the middle of Summer. I hated every minute of it, but in the long run I know it built a little more MOJO. 40' is nothing in the grand scheme of how much you have ridden this Summer. Buck up. You're ready!
Don't sweat it David. I agree with Suzy. I had a similiar experience with my big training run for my 50 miler. I had a set time and distance I wanted to do but after 5 hrs. of rain, sleet and snow, the weather had me calling it quits just short of my goal. However, I knew after that day I could get through anything. You've put in some great training. Now give your body a chance to recovery and be ready for the big day! |

Got a little nudge this evening to stop in. Linda, I am very sorry to hear about what your daughter is going through. I will keep her and your family in my prayers. I needed a bit of a break from BT. I felt I was doing nothing but reading BT and everything I could get my hands on trying to figure out what to do about my injuries. Finally just gave it to the Lord and said triathlon will still be there when the Lord heals me. I will do my part with PT and doc appointments but trying not to drive myself crazy. DH and I got new bikes a week ago! We got matching Cannondale CAAD 10's. We are enjoying them. Well, accept today. lol My chain jumped when I was trying to shift. Fixed that and then promptly got a flat. I was close to home as I have to keep my rides short so I just walked the bike back home. Next week I am going for an in depth running form analysis. Should be good. I hear great stuff about the guy who I am going to see. He also does retul bike fits so I will set up an appointment for that. I am done with PT but my knee isn't 100% yet. It's much better though. Also been having trouble with my hip and back for quite a while. Mild but won't go away. I have a chiro appointment for that but have to wait a few weeks as they were really booked up. I will have to read up on all that I missed here! Have a good night! Good to see you on here Margo - do what you can, but listen to the professionals - they know of what they speak. Don't let the frustration get to you, there will always be another race... middle age has taught me that patience is indeed a virtue - albeit I had to learn that lesson the hard way more than once... |

75lbs??? "hey now" with my best Canadian accent... I wanted to check in re: the strength training question from last Wednesday. I realize crossfit is not traditional strength training and has it's haters, but I am sure it has helped me in coming back from my heel issues last year. The "box" I go to really emphasizes proper technique and form and I really love it! During the half marathon I had no hip soreness, calf tightness or heel pain. After the race, my recovery went smoothly and I was able to move around the next day without my heel bothering me at all. In fact, I think I went to class the next morning before we all went and pigged out at dim sum and left the workout feeling great. As for whether it helped with SBR, I can attest that I needed a bit more endurance for those last 3 miles of the race, my pace dropped and I was getting winded and aggravated that my lungs and stomach could not keep up with my legs. My little experiment tells me, I cannot count on fitness from over 6 months ago and expect not to fatigue! So, back to the 3x/week bike is the plan for HIM training and swimming starts...um...I think, this afternoon!!! I think a 30 minute swim would be a good re-introduction to the pool. No need to be a hero! Have a good Monday everyone and could we get one more re-post of Suzy and Paul's reunion photo??? edited to fix grammatical errors so as not to upset Kyla should she check in from beautiful Kauai! Don't count me amongst the haters.... If you are not a competitive triathlete (and by that I mean one that goes out expecting to be on the podium at the end of every race) then I think appropriate weight training or cross fit can be a part of the healthy lifestyle that we try to embrace. When I say appropriate, I mean that triathletes don't need to be on the bulk up plan and should be reinforcing the fundamental needs of the sport such as leg strength, shoulder/lat strength, core work and general toning... As I have said before, I do feel that I have had functional strength improvements so far this year due to weight training... |

What?dcon - 2013-04-08 5:36 PM Livin' the dream in Kauai, but not eating nearly enough fish tacos. Hiking, boogie-boarding, relaxing, reading, counting blessings. Helicopter ride tomorrow likely followed by Waimea Canyon hike. Thing 1 turns 13 (!!!) tomorrow, too!! Crooked-Arm able to boogie-board today, super fun. Sorry, Suzy, still no rain here. I packed running shoes but, oops, haven't worn them yet. Don't really care, either. Not sure about Vancouver, Trev... Carry on, everyone!!!tdl1972 - 2013-04-08 1:35 PM desertchica - 2013-04-08 12:13 AM Hi, all. It's been a while since I have been around. A quick summary to save your sanity ... Suzy, Kim & Linda N torched Oakland. Suzy BQ'd. Kim front-squatted her body weight + 5lbs ... so like 75 pounds. Julia qualified for nationals in the 500 free. Linda C. picked up first place hardware from a trail marathon. John's off drinking with Mickey. Jayne's been walking barefoot in the mountains. Trevor's been skiiing, but ran a long way this past weekend. The entire D'Alessio clan did a TT and crushed it. Aussie Dave has an IM in less than 30 days. Spanky & Doug dropped by for a brief appearance. It's Masters week here in Georgia. I probably left something out, but those are the highlights off the top of my head.
And Dan is trying to figure out how his bike legs are going to make it through a two day ride covering 180 miles. Not sure if I mentioned that I will be riding in the MS-150 event from Houston to Austin on April 20-21. I have a question for the group, When riding my left hand continually goes numb. I had this problem with my old bike and now the new one. mI was fitted for the new bike. I am doing something wrong? Has this happened to anyone else? what have you done to resolve this issue? |

Has this happened to anyone else? what have you done to resolve this issue? Yes, this has happened to me. Typically it is because you're gripping too hard or putting more weight on that side. try moving your hands to different places on your bike to alleviate the constant pressure. If you wear gloves, they could also be a bit too tight. |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed David, thanks for the summary! That helped quite a bit. Sounds like you all have been busy. Mike, I don't have any advice on the numbness but I can sympathize. I have had wrist pain off and on for months. Not a show stopper but I am still trying to figure out what is causing it. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the bike. Good luck getting yours figured out. So I took some of my hubbies back pills last night (baclofen and ultram). Wow did my hip and back ever feel better! I took some ibuprofen this am and am still feeling pretty good. Not that pills will fix the problem but it is nice to feel good. Anyone here ever do whole30? I am really thinking about trying it. I know some people have done it to help with injury recovery. I have been eating pretty bad lately so it would be a good way to get back to eating better if nothing else. |

Not familiar with whole30 but been trying to be a little bit more paleo over the past year or so. I can part with bread/pasta but I draw the line at rice! Currently reading The Primal Blueprint and it really resonates with me...it's more of a lifestyle thing but it's pretty hard to reconcile with longer distance triathlon training! I like the philosophy of moving slowly but more frequently with some occasional bursts of speed...but when you want to race 70.3, I don't know how that can exactly carry over. But I am trying to make it all work. Eating less grains and processed foods, I feel healthier and have more energy. So, if any of you remember when I went all Goofy in 2012? Well, I am about to get all Dopey in 2014! Happy Tuesday, Gang! |
