Veteran 124 Lake Grove, NY | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge Broke my crap free streak last night. It was my son's birthday and we had pizza and birthday cake. Back on track today! Oh, I took a sip of Diet Coke, you know what? It didn't taste good anymore! Maybe I'm rid of it |

Elite 2515 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge Oh, kids. Thursday was terrible! We were on the road and it was a total clusterfu*k and I thought that the buffalo chicken strips and cheese curds with a Diet Pepsi would taste good. Well, I guess they tasted OK but I felt like dog poo afterward. All that grease hit my gut and it was not pleasant. I haven't had heartburn and indigestion like that for years. No more crap this weekend (except for a piece of wedding cake at my sister-in-law's wedding). Swear. |

Master 2411 Goodyear, AZ | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge I just cant give up coffee. Its not fair to my kids I'm going to try and get by one cup of coffee per, the first cup is always the best anyways. I won't make a full pot anymore, so I'm not tempted to drink it all. My eating has been better except for the last week of school, too many gifts of chocolate, cake & cookies but I left it all there, didnt bring the leftovers home! Keep up the good work guys! |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge I had my cheat meal last night - a cheeseburger and a shake. I felt so sick last night! After not having any grease all week, I really couldn't handle it. Guess it's good encouragement to keep doing it and it'll help me avoid the bad food in the future. I also managed to resist the soda during my cheat meal last night. I don't even really miss it anymore. |

Champion 5850 Michigan | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge I spent the entire runs eating crap. That's more than 11 hours of crap eating. I think after this race I will not want to see anymore crap ever again, or at least for a little while |

Champion 5850 Michigan | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge I'm good. How are you guys? The nutritionist that I work with (read: work along side, he is not my nutritionist) told me to try Ezekiel bread. Seems it's sooper healthy. Comes from sprouted grains so it jam packed full of tasty goodness. Well....goodness anyway. So, today's topic. EZEKIEL bread. Discuss. |

Elite 2515 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge Great, now you've got the song Ezekiel Saw The Wheel in my head. Thanks. I've never eaten Ezekiel bread but I know that my Natural Ovens 100% Whole Grain kicks . Occasionally, I'll get some of the stuff from French Meadow Bakery which is here in Minneapolis and its all healthy and stuff with sprouted whole grainy goodness. They have some with weed in it, too. OK its hemp but its fun to think about eating weed bread. |

Master 2099 Madison, WI | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge Hey I just saw this. Can I join late? Specifically for me, I want to cut out the sugar. I don't eat much in the way of fried food. So, that's not a huge deal. And, we already banned HFCS in my house. Of course, tomorrow and Saturday I'm going to be on the road. So, I really want to start for real on Sunday. (Although I'll try to behave until then.) Oh, and I have recipes for whole wheat/no refined sugar cookies, if anyone wants one. |

Extreme Veteran 370 | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge I just came across this and read all the posts. Congrats to everyone so far! I've been eating pretty clean since late last year (no soda, very little processed food, very little sugar, no soda, etc.) and I can tell each of you how great it feels. It isn't easy but over time your energy levels will shoot up and it will really improve your training! Truly, I feel so much better...I sleep better, I have more energy, I recover better...all in all, it has been great. That being said I slipped off the wagon for a few weeks right around my marathon (I convinced myself that I needed the carbs and sugar to get through training and those darn cliff bars are just too yummy!)...but I'm back on the clean living for the last few days and already feel better! Also, regarding coffee. It really isn't bad for you and actually has some proven health benefits. If you are only drinking a few cups of black coffee a day then you are fine. If you are adding in sugar or cream then you'll need to cut that out. Also, Ezekiel bread is great. It is made from sprouted grain, is all natural and actually tastes pretty good (also has a bunch of protein as well). I use that and the low-carb whole wheat bread that is out there...both of which are yummy and pretty healthy in comparison to the alternatives. Anyway, good luck guys and keep working hard. And if you are looking for some variety, check out the "Eat Clean" diet books by Tosca Reno. Good food that is mostly good for you! --Chris |

Master 2099 Madison, WI | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge I started yesterday. So far, so good. Mostly, for me, it's a sugar dealio. Drank my decaf coffee black this morning. Sort of takes some of the fun out of it. For food I've had kashi go lean cereal with rice milk, and about 1.5 oz of raw power mix (raw almonds, sunflower seeds and raisins). I picked up a copy of "Clean Eating" magazine. It had some good ideas, though how they can really consider cream of crap soup "clean" is beyond me. |

I KNOW this isn't what you want to hear... but, here's the deal. I'm pretty sure that something about Diet Coke is highly addictive. I'm guessing it's the nutrasweet. When I wanted to get pregnant, I kicked all artificial sweeteners & caffeine. Guess which was harder? It was A YEAR before I really felt like I didn't crave Diet Coke. That was scary enough that I've never gone back. Artificial sweeteners are banned from my house and have been for about 6 years. Here's what helped - drink a fizzy water - you know, the carbonated, unsweetened, mineral water, sometimes flavored by some fruit flavoring? Around here we drink Klarbrunn or La Croix. Seems like there are some parts of the states that don't know what you mean when you say mineral water or fizzy water. There's nothing scary in there unless you think C02 is scary. As a side note, has anyone noticed how many supposedly healthy athlete-marketed products have artificial sweeteners? They're in all those "drop this tablet in a bottle" electrolytes, and in lots of the prefab drinks and such. Ick! |

Hey Fred, I'm in the same boat. Seems the options are limited. I have tried seltzer and unsweetened cranberry juice, but it doesn't seem to satisfy my thirst. Lemon Juice in water got old quick too. I blew it Sunday. On the car ride home from a bike tour, I was falling asleep at the wheel..... not good! Wife was out cold and we had been up since 4:30am. I caved and had most of a can of Diet Coke. Woke me up, but wasn't happy about drinking it. Then had pizza, there it is again and some more DC at a family gathering that evening. I'm guessing pizza is not all that bad, if the sugar is kept out of the sauce and dough. |

Veteran 160 Oak Park, IL | Subject: RE: The trixie/matchman CUT THE CRAP challenge I really like La Croix as an option. It seems to help when I'm really craving something other than plain water. I just didn't bring any to work today and all you can get from the vending machines is the "bad" stuff. But, I've stayed strong so far and I think the worst is behind me! Thanks for the other options too! |
