Is it smooth like last year or has it been roughed up over the winter? I went out with a friend today and the bike course is pretty darn smooth. The only concern is a 5-8 mile stretch where they have cut grooves into the road, in preparation for paving. Sure hope the paving is done before the race! It was highly annoying to ride on, and really jarred the bike and your body. Does anyone have any inside info on that section? The bike was really windy today. The Choptank, super choppy. I do not know how windy the bike ride normally is, but it made the ride a bit challenging today. We only saw one other rider out on the course, strangely enough. Are we too far out to see people training on the course? I figured there would be plenty of cyclists. Edited by kalalau 2009-04-19 10:28 PM |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread Wrong side of the bridge for me. I won't see the course until race day (not that I haven't seen it enough over there in the last 3 years ...... plus it is also the same place they used to do the MD time trial championships every year). Not sure I'm going to like the swim course change. May make it an even tougher swim. |

Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread I am going to be back in the DC/Bethesda/Chevy Chase area in two weeks from the wilds of Tennessee and am looking for a training partner for my long/tempo rides and/or bricks, which I usually do on Saturday mornings. I would be riding around the area like on River Road but and flexible to travel and meet up. Any takers? Edited by eyeofthetiger2007 2009-04-22 7:19 AM |

That's pretty close to the race site, good deal. For kids, it depends on how far you want to go. St. Michael's is a wonderful town to visit, shop, and eat crabs on a deck by the water. Tilghman Island is also pretty nice but might be too boring for kids. My thoughts turned to Crisfield, and taking a boat over to Smith Island, but that is 90 minutes away and for that kind of travel you could just as well go to Ocean City. There is also a paved trail at Kent Narrows that they could ride bikes on and such. 50 mins away. If they do go to St. Michael's, they may like taking the Oxford Ferry over. It's one of the oldest ferries in the US. Just look up Oxford on the map. We take the ferry over during bike rides over there and it's pretty fun.

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread So.... how many of you Eagleman peeps will be doing Columbia in a few weeks? I'll be at both, and would love to see some fellow BT-er's! How's everyone's training going? I got a slow start this year.... I had grand plans for a sub-6:00 race when I signed up, but I doubt that's going to be possible for me at this point. How about everyone else? Anyone care to share your goals for the race? |

Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread I am going to be at Columbia, but not competing, simply racing. I am treating it as more of a workout than a race especially since I jumped up an age bracket to 20-24, one of the most competitive brackets, and have no hope of placing. My training has been so-so this year. I have been tied up with Track and Field and therefore have not been able to do as much swimming and biking as I would like. I still have a month to Eagleman, and a lot can happen training wise in a month. I pretty much have set a really good aerobic base in every discipline, now I just have to tie them together. I am hoping to break 4:30. My last ride was encouraging, and I was able to do 53 miles in a solid 2 hours 30 minutes with a few massive hills on the course. We shall see how I do when I get back to MD and can do some training rides in the conditions there, when the wind is less and there are less massive hills than the wilds of TN. If anyone has some good rides that they have mapped out in the DC/Silver Spring/Bethesda area, please post them! |

Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread Is there anyone doing the Dextro Energy Triathlon on June 21st? I am thinking about it since its age group championships, but its only a week after eagleman, which might not be the wisest idea for recovery. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread Doing both Columbia and E-Man. Then following it up with the Tri-To-Win sprint the week after ...... same day as that one you just mentioned. Not really giving much of a hoot about any regimented training, so no expectations other than wanting to race smart this year and within my limits. |

X2 That last long stretch back home always seems to have a stiff wind. It's constantly blowing. It's at a bad spot in the race too. It's a make or break point in the race. If your fitness is lacking on the bike this is most certainly where it will show. |

If you look up last year's timeline, the page actually shows this year's race, so it might be the timeline (no guarantee obviously): http://www.tricolumbia.org/Eagleman/timelines.php |

Master 1420 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread For those of you that have done Eagleman and Columbia in the same year, what where your bike speeds? If you averaged x at Columbia, what did you do at Eagleman? |
2009-05-19 7:14 AM in reply to: #1869406 |
Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread Because the courses are so different, it is hard to compute the speeds. I would guess tack on about 2 mph to your Columbia speed, but with the wind and the increase in distance at Eagleman, that estimate may decrease. |

Pro 4054 yep, | Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread I just wanted to chim in here since I'll be spectating! For the question on what type of speed you'll be doing down in the lovely flat lands here is what I was able to produce while going to school down there. I would avg 20-22ish for a 40 mile ride down in Salisbury and then come ride and avg around 17ish for the Columbia course. Now I think a lot of that had to deal with the fact of my lack of hill training and not being anywhere near conditionally ready for the hills. I'd say if you avg'd 20-21on Columbia then you could maintain 23-26 depending on the conditions with the wind. Always a challenge
ANyone interested in doing a group pace ride down in Cambridge/Salisbury anytime soon?! |
