Bruenor - 2010-05-14 11:09 PM I'm afraid of setting the goal of completing an Ironman and failing at it.  That's why my goal is to complete my first Ironman in 2014.  I'm hoping that four years of training will be enough to get me across the finish line at IMKY in under 17 hours.

My other fear is that, when I complete my Ironman, it won't be what I expect it to be.

Some people had that feeling whether it was certain expectations or because of the venue.

Come to IM WI and feel the spirit - our volunteers are terrific, and it's a celebration as you finish the final 25 yards or so.  But, it's after you finish, and if you don't have family or friends there afterwards, then I can see how one would feel lonely and such.

Growing up in the '70s, we always were hearing about the killer bees moving up from South America, getting closer!!  Last night, we saw the end of the movie The Swarm - just about the cheesiest movie ever!  I'm still not a fan of bees.

Self-pity whinage starting ... here it is ...

I am confronted with my horror/fear all the time, every day.

I have to sleep in my room knowing there are at least several geckos running around in it.

I will have physical contact with one at least weekly.

Any place I go on this island, I will be surrounded by them, inside or out.

There are artistic representations of them everywhere, too.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!

Add me to the not afraid of anyTHING camp as well.  I'm a reptile aficianodo... have had countless as pets in all shapes and kinds.  Spiders too.  Heights are awesome.  Clowns are ridiculous.  Small spaces are cozy.  Sharks are statistically insignificant and fish are cool.

For me, it's much more internal.  I'm afraid of my own propensity for flawed thinking and bad decisionmaking.  I'm afraid of losing control.  I'm afraid of isolation or rejection from things that are important to me.

Back when I was a carpenter, I hated walking the top plates, especially when setting joists.

Ditto.  Heights without support or backup and if I have to balance it will get me.  If I can hold something or am tied in, I am ok and can function, but it's difficult.

Not much really spooks me, but I realized what does.  Logs.

Not just any logs, but specifically logs under the river where alligators live.  I was diving in South Carolina again this weekend, and everytime I came upon a pile of logs, I would start to think about how gators like to hang out or keep their meals there, and start sucking down my air out of the anxiety about the gators that I was CERTAIN were on the other side of the log.  Given that visibility is limited to whatever is right in front of my flashlight, it was easy to creep myself out.

Mine is really, really deep saltwater.  The unknown beneath me gives me the eebie-jeebies.

Oh, and one of my favorite hobbies...off-shore fishing.  Yep.  If I was ever to go overboard while 30 miles off-shore, no one would have to worry about a shark eating me, cuz I'd die of a heart-attack before I hit the water.

For me, not having someone to love or be loved by would be worse. Scary.

Also, those hairy millipede-thingies, and roaches. Spiders are cool, but these two are not. I'm not a huge fan of heights, but I can deal with them.

Interestingly, during my meditation this morning, the thought "There's really nothing to be afraid of, you know" flashed through my mind, there and then gone. Hmm...

I am afraid of a lot of things, but have faced and dealt with them when I have no other way around it.  Ranging from small things like bugs and height to public speaking to making major life decisions.
I found every time I face and go through them the next time I would be a little less afraid.  Although I am still very afraid of bugs.

The dead groundhog that spent the winter at the bottom of my pool. Found him yesterday while I was taking the the cover off.

I suspect that after today, my garbageman's worst fear will be opening the lid to my trash cans.

I had a dream years ago that haunted me and was recurrent. It was way more "real" than an average dream. It involved the classic car accident on a mountain highway. The car teeter totters on the edge...then slowly slides off. The sound of metal on rock was remarkable and horrible. This went on for years. No history of anything to trigger this.

Fast forward to trip to BC...hiking on the edge of a steep mountain and out of the blue, damned if I didn't hear, I mean really HEAR that metal on rock sound. This was accompanied by full out adrenal crunch. It was a beautiful place on a beautiful day. I got pissed off that this was happening. So I forced myself to go over to the very edge of the cliff (>1,000 feet straight down) and sat daggling my feet til calm. The dream never returned. The fear is gone. (I had forgotten about it acutally until reading some of these)

I'm not talking about the past. And yes, there are worse things. But I'm not afraid of them.

Children with dirty / snotty faces.  Nasty human petri dishes!

No, really, what truly frightens/horrifies/disgusts you? What's your bete noir? What makes you wake up in a cold sweat?

For me, it is geckoes. I shudder to even think.

Of course, I moved to a country where they're EVERYWHERE. They make me scream. If one is on the ceiling, I cannot sleep for fear it will fall on me.

Snakes without a doubt.  I'm scared to death of them.  Some people are afraid of spiders, roaches, heights, me it's snakes.

Maybe it's the whole Biblical devil thing.  Nasty

Dying alone. With no kids, no family, no husband, nothing.

If I think about it for any length of time it frightens me so much it makes me cry.
