GMAN 19030 - 2011-08-25 6:47 AM Possibly in the canal portion but not in the lake.  Swimming is faster than standing.

I think I heard this too, but maybe only on the far side of the canal.  Definitely not in the lake.  If you make it to the canal you're almost done anyway, so no point in standing, just finish & get out.

Hey everyone,

Let me intoduce my self. My name is Tony and I am american living in Brazil. I am in for my first IM. I though I would finally get this off my to do list. I missed the IM Brazil. It filled up in 4hrs and 35 min.

Sad thing is I will be doing all my training in Brazil. Problem is I got no real good place to bike. Its to damn dangerous to ride on the streets. Damn near got run down twice. You have to drive about an hour out of the city for a safe place. Really annoying.

Some good info on the thread. Any other suggestions. I am open to it.

I also recommend to not stand in the canal. Not worth the risk of stepping on something sharp and cutting your feet.

Welcome to the group, if possible, get a computrainer and hope they get the course video out soon. Living in Michigan I will have close to 6 months of crap weather to train in so my ct will be my best friend.

after the turn and heading back toward the canal, but still in the main part of the lake, you can definitely stand out several yards from the bulkhead.  many people were doing so.

8 months out, sweet.  How's training going?  I'm enjoying the heat and humidity of this tropical island but looking foward to the day we leave.  Looks like we fly out on January 1st, great way to start a new year.

Stay healthy.

38 weeks to go and counting. Training is good. I struggle with the 4th sport (nutrition). It seems to take more discipline for that then swiming, biking or running.

It is exactly 20 weeks from the first of the year. That bronze training program would fit nicely in that time frame.

Hello All,

My name is Nacho.  I have been registered for Texas since registration opened in May and even though it was meant to be my first IM I couldn't wait that long so I registered for IMLOU '11 a day after TX opened.  I completed IMLOU and can't wait for TX.  Good luck to all!

Not sure if people from out of state realize, but one of the wild fires burnt up some land around the bike course.  It would be the 1488/jackson road portion.  I live about 10 miles from the area so it will be erie for me to see what is left of the area.  I keep the garage windows open to have it a little cooler for early morning trainer rides and this morning my garage was full of smoke,.  I still tried to ride, but I had a head ache and felt I was wasteing my time (more so today than other days).

The wind is really blowing all the smoke this way today.  Glad I did not have a bike ride planned.  My longer rides run down 1486 & 1774 right on the edge of where some of those fires are.  I have one planned for this weekend, but I guess I will have to change that til this gets under control.

Hey Everyone,

My name is Sam and this is going to be my first IM and some people seem to think that I am in a little over my head since my first triathlon ever was last weekend but I like a challenge and I am really excited about it. If you all have any good training/racing tips I would love to hear them.

Welcome to the group Sam, what distance was your first race and how did it go? Tell us about your athletic background. Runner/biker/ or swimmer?

My first race was a sprint distance and I completed it in 1:22:59 and I got 4th in the Novice Men category but now that I have experienced it I am becoming a little obsessed. My next race is an Olympic distance at Giant Acorn in VA.

I am not a runner, biker, or swimmer but rather a rower. I have rowed for the past 6 years of my life and was recruited to row at quite a few universities so I would say that I am in pretty athletic but it is now a matter of conditioning myself to a new sport. This is definitely going to be a challenge but I am really looking forward to it!

Some rowers have gone on to be VERY successful Ironman racers, the first one that comes to the top of my head is Jordan Rapp, 2xwinner at Ironman Canada and 1x at Ironman Arizona!! Sounds like you're on the right path! Just get a plan, stick to it, train hard, and remember the training really is harder than the racing!! Welcome to our IMTX crew!
