JasenGuy - 2012-05-05 2:58 PM You guys keep obsessing about training (or lack there of) and weather and I'll keep obsessing about what we're eating afterwards!!!
I'm more worried about what we are drinking afterwards...

Lots of cold beer.  I've worked so hard and most of the hay is in the barn.  I'm crushing my goal race paces in practice.  I'm ready!! Wish the race was tomorrow.

That is awesome, man!! I think I'm almost there with you. I missed close to a month of running due to injury, but I'm back up to 10 miles and my shorter run have been strong...I'm doing an OLY next Sunday and I'll really know where I'm at.

Although, if the race was tomorrow I probably wouldn't have ride ridden so long today...Smile

So I had a good OWS practice in pretty cold water. Swam about a mile even though my 910xt only said 1280 yards. I looked over the path and it was a bit off and skipped a lap or two on the course that was set up.

The lake was a bit murky, so it got me wondering about what the reservoir water clarity was like... Obviously it isn't going to be Kona clear, but it is also drinking water, so it will probably be a bit better than a murky little fishing lake.

I went for an open water swim yesterday and my zipper blew apart.  I'm going to try and find a repair shop and order a new one just in case.  On a side note I found I can swim about a mile in about 44 minutes with the zipper wide open on my full wetsuit in 60 degree water.  I wouldn't advise that setup, but at least I know I can do it if all else fails.

Any word on getting shuttle tickets out to the Lucky the day of the race.  The race site says they will post the link to buy them before hand, but I have not seen a  link yet.

Pizza sounds good after a race.  Although I'm up for anything as far as food goes.

PeteDin206 - 2012-05-05 4:43 PM 3-3.5 weeks is plenty of time to see some small gains in fitness, but a lot of time to see improvements in some basic fundamentals. Practicing transitions (including setup), walking through race nutrition and even making sure the basics such as trisuit, running shoes and other equipment are ready to race.

Good point... I soaked my wetsuit Sat night, went for 50 mile ride w/ 2000ft gain (longest and hilliest yet this year - and only 2nd ride out on racebike this year), and then ran 9.3 mi today (not my fastest but I was reminded of some nutritional concerns)
I'm also replaying last year's HIM through my head.
I believe for me right now it's more mental gains than physical.

I may not excel (and will be way in the back of the pack), but as my friend of mine points out, I'm so damn obstinate that I shall persevere through my own manner.

As for food... POPEYE's!!!  I grew up on the crap as a kid in South La and we don't have them here in Utah (yet   )   I was even joking yesterday that I just might throw a chicken leg in my Bento box, lol!!!

Did you do Boise last year? If so, did you see my question about the water? I know it will be dark, since we aren't talking Kona here, but how is the clarity? Am I going to have a bunch of crap floating in my face, or is it generally pretty clean?

The water is typical of western washington lakes.  It is not an clear as Lake Chelan if you've been in that but more similar to Lake Washington or Green Lake.  It is pretty clean just not a lot of visibility.

Cool, I figured it would be "dark" so to speak. I've just been swimming in lakes that have a lot of particulate in the water making it more murky which just isn't fun.

It has been an interesting day for me. I went for a 5 mile run (first since April 29th) since I had a sinus infection. The run today wasn't too bad, but before last week my feet were killing me. I've had a morton's neuroma in both feet for almost 10 years that was misdiagnosed. I've been doing cortisone shots once every 6 months for the last 18-24 months. It has actually helped a lot. I decided to drop into my doctor's office and get another round rather than have it flare up right before the race. It means I'm stuck not running for another week but I can bike/swim still. Hopefully the shift to focus on swim and bike and rested feet will help in the long run. I'll start running again next week with some very slow long runs (7-10 miles at about 50% pace) to keep the miles up.

The water is probably close to what you are experiencing. Definitely not like Lake Chelan is.  But it is a reservoir so it might be a touch clearer since water is moving at the damn.  It has been a long time since I have been jetskiing there so hard to really remember.

Anyone know the temps yet? I am looking to be able to get an OWS this week but not quite sure since I don't have anyone to go with here and I am definitely not doing it alone.

Question for the ones that have done the course before: should I bring a disc/808 combo or double 404s? Is it windy? Hilly perhaps? If it is hilly is it rollers or long climbs? Tribike transport will not allow 2 pairs of wheels so I need to decide...

Any help will be much appreciated, thanks!

It was in the upper 40's (about 47) according to a fishing forum. That was the closest thing to a accurate reading I could find.

Never raced the course, but have ridden it several times.  There are four climbs, all quite long, the second of which is the shortest and most challenging.  Indeed, I wouldn't classify any of the course as "flats."  You can expect wind that time of day, usually (but not always, of course) out of the west.  If that's the case, we'll be dealing with crosswinds about 1/3 to 1/2 of the course, I'd say.

I've seen many, many of the better finishers riding 808s with a disc, and plenty of dual 404s, too.  If you're a bit heavier and/or have confidence in your bike handling, I'd go with the former.

I'm riding a set of Firecrest 808's for the race. I have the opportunity to add a disc, but I figure the 808's should be plenty fast for me.

As mentioned, if you are a lighter rider, I'd go with the 404's.

Regarding the wheel choice. I didnt think that Tri Bike Transport allowed disc wheels in the first place. They must have a ratcheting system (like a car bike rack) that goes 'thru'  the wheel and since a disc doesnt allow that Tri Bike doesnt allow the disc. I could be wrong but wanted to point it out.

Havent ridden the course but Ive heard its more of a country road with 'rollers' and not terrible hills.

What to worry about?

Cold water and wind.

Cant control any of it so I just hope for the best!

The climbs aren't too dramatic. Nothing longer than 1.5 miles or so. There are a few rollers, nothing of note, though. The biggest worry would be how windy it is. Last year, it was perfect weather...very light winds and around 80*. But, the year before, it was fierce winds. In your case, one option would be go with your 404 front and the disc. But since you can only bring two wheels, the safest/surest bet would be 404s.

This is kind of what I was thinking.  The weather there can be unpredictable and dramatically different from one day to the next.  If you have to choose I'd go with the 404's to be on the safe side.  The hills there are no big deal and if the conditions were OK the disc would definately be faster.  I ride a 404/808.  If I had a disc, I'd bring it and make a last minute decision based on the wind.

Well it looks like bib numbers are posted... I checked my number and got 489. Normally I would be concerned with the number 4, which symbolizes death in Chinese (my wife is Chinese), as a bad thing. But after searching the number 489 and Chinese numerology in google, it turns out the number 489 symbolizes the Dragon Head and is often used by the "triads" to represent the leader of the organization. Again, not the best to be associated with a gang, but at least it has a cool meaning.

Still no swim waves though.

My wife is number 123 which is kind of a nice number.  I hope she starts training pretty soon though or she will be DNS or DNF.
