'Ave you brought tuffies 'round wiv' you?

Or perhaps a knit tri jersey?

Are you sure we can be part of your gang? Hee hee ...

Darling Allen, we broke you in for road running, we wouldn't think of leaving you out there, cold and damp (which is clearly why you DID bring that knitted trip top, right???) to lose your tri-cherry just with strangers ...

Welcome home! Please introduce yourself to everyone again, we've lots of nice new Manatees, and try not to scare them off. Actually, considering that Salty and I haven't yet, just be yourself.

Being from Michigan, I can hear a Canadian accent a mile away, A.  Not only the 'A' on everything but a-boat for about and pro-cess with a long 'o' for process.  I love my Canadian coworkers and their accents.

Too much family drama tonight so I blew off my 8 mile run to dive into a glass of wine.  The desire and the energy were drained out of me.

Yanti, where and when is the Light at the End of the Tunnel Marathon?  I love the name of it and I may have to do it just because of that.

Looks like we have a great group of new and vintage manatees in the pool this Spring!  Glad to see and meet everyone.  I've been enjoying reading about everyone's journeys.  Remember "just keep swimming"-Finding Nemo.  So profound!!

I don't know! (When was the last time you heard me say that? SHOCKING) ... that's Salty's race.

kgore - 2012-04-05 8:51 PM Hey Erica, nice to meet ya! I'm also an anthro major---though at Cal State Sacramento--I have 1-2 semesters left (depends on whether my job is willing to work with my schedule or not!)

Awesome!  Not too many anthro majors around it seems.  Do you have any plans for after graduating?  I really want to jump into grad school but I need to wait until the kid situation settles down.  We do have a lot of archaeological digs going on in our area (large Native American tribes) so I might go and drop my resume at the research facility.  We'll see.

I got a 35 minute walk in yesterday with our two dogs.  It was a beautiful morning.  Today I am not sure what the plan is.  As it is Good Friday the kids are home from school.  Cole has program in the morning and my daughter has asked to go to the mall.  Shoot me.   I'll squeeze in something this afternoon.

What's everyone else up to?  Plans for the Passover/Easter weekend?  Anyone racing?

Morning all -

My littles are off for Good Friday/Easter Monday but I have to work. They were just off a week ago for spring break - ugh...let's not make this easy for working parents, or anything.

I'm taking today off - iced my knees and rolled yesterday/last night.

I'm supposed to have a long run (8-9) this weekend; I'm going to set out to run/walk it from the get-go and see if my knee will let me through it . The other day I'll probably get a trainer ride in.

Have a good day, all!

Good Morning, or since this is a multi-national group, Good Day! I am looking forward to a good prep for this years race and it seems like this group will be just what I need to keep focused yet not get too serious. I'll add my accent observation in an effort to keep up with the conversation. I've lived on Long Island, NY and in SWFl. 2 parts of America that can't understand each other in a conversation. Mostly mid westerners in SWFl, but with just enough "southerners" thrown in to make it interesting, ya'll.

I have been lax this week, what with the head cold from Hades. I have the bike with me today, so I am in for a headwind filled ride home this afternoon. I heard that there will be 20 mph winds with 25 mph gusts. I believe this is a is what my current manager would call a training "opportunity"

I'll be out of touch this weekend, visiting my daughters in Orlando. I hope to get back on track on Monday morning, 5:00 am run. I have found that I truly enjoy the running in the peace and quiet of the predawn morning.

Enjoy the day!

Tried to make it to the pool yesterday but had a note from my home owners association that I had to mow my weeds... err... grass, guess I'm doing training right if that is falling behind.  By the end my head cold returned with a vengence and this morning I feel it is trying to move into my chest...

Can't have that, must avoid Allen's man-fluSmile, so taking the day off from work and will continue my epic battle of trying to get a trainer tire onto my wheel.

Good to see returning manatees Allen and Keye!!

So does eating chips and gravy (my newest addiction) count as training? I totally blame Australia ... my goodness ... I didn't even know such a thing existed and it's so good, it ought to be a food group on its own (along with Pop Tarts, of course).

Still trying to rest as much as I need to (not just from the big trip and race but from weeks of running on borrowed energy beforehand, so to speak) without feeling guilty. So my other big activities for the day were meeting some nice ladies for Bible study (I make them sound like sweet little church ladies--well, they are, but they're both pretty badazz too) for Good Friday and a serene late afternoon nap with the Furry Family piled in, seeing as they refuse to be peeled off my body since I've been back.

You don't want to know. Don't go down that road. Stop while you still can ...

Okay, it's like poutine without the cottage cheese.

Don't know what poutine is either? RUN ... actually, that's exactly what you have to do after consuming that ... and run a LOT ...

French fries, but the really nice thick-cut potatoey fries, not that fast-food half-flour crap, covered in savory gravy (so not like breakfast sausage gravy) ... SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD NEED MORE NEED MORE NEED MORE except I'm out of fries. DRAT!

Totally off topic/random question but I know Yanti is the dog whisperer so here goes.  Anyone have any advice about what to do with a dog that has major anxiety when riding in the car?  Our (almost) 2 y/o Labradoodle is a mess whenever we have to take a ride.  He has gotten a bit better but he still drools like a mad dog.  It's gross and I feel bad for the pup.

Also, does anyone use an auto harness or other implement while transporting their doggies?  Our cavapoo likes to sit on my lap while I drive but it's drives me nuts.

What's the size of the car? Is it feasible to put dog boxes in the back? There are the collapsible, mesh-sided kind if there's not a lot of room in your car and hard crates would be bulky/awkward. Dogs (thinking of your 'doodle here) often feel more cozy and comfortable in an enclosed surrounding when they're in an unfamiliar environment or one not to their liking. And this would also give your 'poo (ha ha--sorry, you know how juvenile I am) another type of space besides your lap that s/he likes riding in.

By the way, it's super easy to crate train a dog (if they aren't already) unless they've specifically been made crate/box/small-space adverse through abuse.

Collapsible crates are probably the easiest answer. Doggie belts are also a possibility but a) it's harder to get dogs used to them, and b) many of them are best used in conjunction with a doggie seat, so you still have the same space issue you'd have with crates.

KansasMom - 2012-04-05 10:22 PM

Welcome to everyone who joined in the last day or so.

I had a crazy busy day at work today, so in no particular order, here are some of my comments/thoughts about what people have said over the last couple pages.

1) Wet shoes. Yuck. I will have to try the newspaper trick. I don't have to deal with it much here, but things have been a little wet for the past few days.

Newspaper does help wick it out.  The boot dryer is working well for me with both dry and post-wet stink.

2) Gall Bladder -- I had a moment to post that I had mine out as well. I was in so much pain, couldn't eat -- my weight loss actually started with my gall bladder problems. I was hesitant to have it out, but having it out was probably the best thing I ever did. I felt like a new person, at about 6 weeks post op.

Still have mine.  Other parts, not so much.

3) Depression -- been in the deep dark hole. Not fun. I was also on medication (zoloft), and I credit it with saving my life. Literally. My depression was from the break up of my first marraige -- bad, bad situation.

Been there for sure.  Meds.  More meds.  New job.  Exercise -- especially outdoor exercise.

4) Accents. Mine is crazy. I'm from Oregon, lived in Tennessee, New York, Virginia, and now Kansas. I say "y'all" but I also have the very open vowels of someone from upstate New York. I grew up saying "pop," but now I say "soda."

I speak mostly "Milwaukee Mumble" but I have not actually lived in Wisconsin since since third grade.  I think it's because that's where I learned to speak and because my mother is a Milwaukee native.  At least I don't have that nasty "youse guys" thing going.  Maybe a little "y'all" after living in North Carolina for 20 years :-)

Good job with the walk!  It's great that you were able to get it into the schedule.  FWIW, I'd log it as a run.  I think that is a limitation / bug in the training log here. I hope that it is addressed in the refresh (some sort of pace selector for biped motion?  run, galloway, racewalk, walk?)

Swim this morning (done).  Post swim bloody nose.  Called ENT and got an appt for next week.  I fear bleeding in the pool would make me very unpopular and this bloody nose situation is getting to be too frequent Undecided

Longish ride tomorrow and run/swim on Easter.

My parents live about 30 minutes away and they are coming over for Easter dinner.

I have two, both at UCF, sort of. One is a graduate and lives in near the main campus. The other attends Rosen and lives in Altamonte. Or is it College Park. Or is it Winter Park. Goodness knows that "Orlando" is a mess for those of us that are barely familiar with it. I still don't have the hang of it after 6 years of having one or both of them there. Oh, I certainly agree with the "plus side". Any day that is less crowded at work is one that I get more stuff done.

Good job on the trainer ride. Not falling = a good day!

Good morning (good afternoon, good evening??)

My husband is working today and I took my little one to daycare, but the rest of us are home today and Monday. Hooray! I'm working myself up for a 26 mile bike ride outside -- it's 46 degrees. Burrr. But since I have my first tri next Saturday, and it starts at 9:00, and I'll be on the bike at around 9:15 a.m. soaking wet, I figured I had better get out there and start suffering.

My 11 year old volunteered to dump a bucket of water on my head first. He's so thoughtful. Tongue out

Chips and gravy sounds too evil. But I'll probably be thinking about it for my whole ride. Thanks so much for that, Yanti.

You're probably already out riding, but TRUST ME on this one--yes--it is a very good idea to go out there and do it in that weather for better prep next weekend Hope you have a great ride! And what a thoughtful son, indeed. Heh.

I tend to think of piglet.burger.piglet.burger on long or hard efforts ... but it might be chipsgravy.piglet from now on ...

There's quite a few here in California--I think its due to the fact that there are quite a few opportunities here for anthro jobs--we have really strict regulations regarding building/development and following NAGPRA, so anytime there is new development (pretty much constantly!)there is a need for anthropologists! As for myself, I don't have plans for anything anthro based after graduation, as I already have my career as a zookeeper--according to zoo folk, anthropology is considered a zoo related discipline (probably primarily with primatology, but I work with reptiles, go figure!); so the degree will encourage higher pay and more zoo opportunities in the future! OF course, I also chose anthro due to interest and the fact that I just couldn't succeed in getting a bio degree! Undecided
