Originally posted by Pink Socks Wow, lots of activity going on today. Would love to respond to everyone but limited time, short attn span, p.o. from son's h.s. baseball game, and into the wine (again) therefore I can't respond to everyone. Love the doc's synopsis of everyone's activities. Looking forward to getting to know you. Pops, love the fact that you are doing a race with SIL because he asked. Right thing to do. Have fun! Switch, I had to go look up the def of Switch in UD after that response. LMAO. I kinda figured you didn't have the truck so I think I could figure out which definitions were your characteristics. Gotta admit, I was wondering probably the same thing Salty was thinking so I'm glad I got clarification. And yes, I try to wear pink socks or something pink when I run but I don't always make it. My name came because I watched son's middle school XC team wear pink socks in memory of the coach's late wife. It touched me and made this "skinny fat" woman begin training for the Breast Cancer HM. My alter ego is Pink and now lots of people in town just call me Pink. I saw the pic in the thread to represent Switch. I saw a pic of Switch on BT Girls a couple of months ago and I think our own Switch is much, much hotter. My jaw fell open when I saw what Switch really looks like. {slight girl crush} Busy day for me today and I didn't get as much accomplished as I wanted but this challenge made me come home and do my back exercises and some core. As expected, I'm a sore motha today from the pushups and little weights from yesterday. Gonna try to get up early tomorrow and get in my run before the true soreness cripples me.

You have officially made my day.  Thank you sweetness.  So, I can call you Pink? :)

Nice job gettin it done even with a busy day.  Sometimes I feel like that is the biggest challenge.

Our coach said, as a team, we were weak in the area of not closing the gap in XC competition and this drill would help with that. So, speaking of working on weaknesses :)

But I only did 3 repeats and called it a night in hopes that I will have something left for our race Saturday. Today I did some easy running and then core and abductor strength.

Slacker ;)

what do you do for abductor exercises?  I can't think of the last time I specifically worked them.  I guess some fire hydrants, which do hurt like a mofo, but I haven't done anything else.  Suggestions?

Good luck tomorrow Salty!

Originally posted by dtoce so, I'm finally getting around to checking in....(head down and disappointed) because life has pulled me a bit and I just haven't had the time or energy to force workouts...not quite the same as blowing off w/o because it's base, but it's still a weakness...sigh as I do with my patient's charts, I go back to my last note and read up to see what's happened I see that this is what is going on: Scott will be doing an OWS with his tri top and will make sure that wetsuit fits nicely! (some conditioner on the shoulders works if you don't like to use PAM-just another thought, but make the fit good) Brad is foam rolling Kim is staying away from ice cream Elena is good... she's in --and doing some core work, along with Pink Socks Pam Matt, Adriennne and Steve are getting in some track work. 30/30's are a classic Billat workout (who else knew that?) Noelle and Nicole are working on run weakness? and our dear Switch is on the DL--(btw, I would recommend NO HARD workouts, even hard swim workouts, until you are recovered)-keeping my fingers crossed for you I got my weekend workouts in and then...nothing Monday/Tues/Wed...BUT, I did a nice hard bike today-20 miles in 59:58. Now for dinner with the family-including both kids and their girlfriends. Let the drama begin!

Good job checking in Dale.  You sound like a very busy man, and nothing like being on call to hamstring training;)

I'm very curious to hear how your dinner went--lol!

I shouldn't go hard at all?  Even in the pool?  I may be crying right now...

I'm also working on an off-season project to address another limiter:  equipment.  I'm currently riding on my Fuji roadie with clip-ons...it got me through my races this year but I think it's time to put something together that puts me in a proper aero position and all that.  Another limiter: CA$H, so I'm building it up myself, looking for deals on CL and Ebay.  I'll then find a frame that fits and a buddy of mine and I will drink a 12-pack and put it together.

This is ridiculously cool Mike.

I have build a bike on my to-do list this winter.  I freakin have tot get some wrenching skills.  Please keep us updated on your project.

Say more about the locked knee while on the left leg thing. My inner yogi wants to know;)

I've got a track workout tonight that I'm freaking out a little bit over.  Mile repeats.  I can just feel the pain and suffering coming.  But it is a weakness that I'm working on so have to look it straight in the eye.

This will be the first two quality workout week in 30 years as I did 200m repeats earlier in the week.  Maybe even three as my son in law is trying to talk me into a race this weekend.  Lake Padden trail half marathon.  Much of the same terrain as your last XC race Adrienne.

Awesome. Very gorgeous area. The trail portion around the lake is  very nice. Our guys did 10K for their race which was twice around. Does that mean you would do 4ish? Or does it just do a bigger loop? Are you recovered from your marathon enough to do it?

Of all the different repeats I really enjoy the miles! Lean into it Steve! Are you doing them on a track? I really like them on a track. Then you can keep nice and even splits.

New weakness.  Patience.  Good workout physically.  Very poor mental execution which has been my 5k racing downfall.

Goal: 4 x 7:30

Actual: 7:05, 6:40, 7:20, dry heaves, 7:10.

I think these workouts are tougher when you do them by yourself but I feel like this was pretty bad.  May have to do penance on the trainer tonight to think this over.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I am laughing with you, Steve.  Totally with you.

Absolutely spit my coffee out when I saw the 6:40 and the dry heaves.  Lol.

And then again when I saw the "do penance on the trainer".  Seriously cracking me up.

Bummer!  Having rolled my ankle more times than I can count, I feel your pain.

Ice, Advil, repeat.  Be careful not to to develop any form issues while kinda limping as your recover.

Unfortunately for me, my running was derailed before it ever really started. I used to do a lot of lifting and general fitness stuff through college and after....started the whole triathlon thing in April, 2012 with no SBR background at all. In July, 2012, I got hit while out on a training ride -- was ejected from my bike and my left knee took the impact (follwed by my left hip and left elbow).

Had numerous doctors and physical therapists look at my knee and no one could figure out why I was having issues as everything looked clean. Had surgery....found nothing (what a freaking waste!!). Tried to reintroduce running three times post-accident (once before surgery, and twice after) and the knee pain never got better.

This is the third time and I've been at it for about 8-9 weeks, I think (have it all logged, but too lazy to check right now!). I decided I'd be very consistent, and ramp up the volume slowly. My knee still doesn't feel great, but it's not getting worse -- so I'm calling it a victory! It's highly unlikely my knee will ever be like it was, but I can tolerate it....and if I can be consistent and avoid new/other injuries, I will be happy.

So that's where I am....lots of easy running, and currently building up volume slowly.

Ugh, Matt.  Sorry to hear that.  Injuries like this are such a major bummer.  I'm also prone to ankle rolling.  Every so often I step on a rogue pine cone, rock, etc. and the ankle starts to roll.  I must be catching it soon enough because aside from a little nerve jolt, I'm able to continue on no worse for the wear.  I always wonder when the day will come that like you I won't be so lucky.

Sending you quick recovery vibes~~~~~~recover~~~~~~

What's really sad is I had a Garmin giving me quarterly splits..  Hopefully lessons learned is practice will not be mistakes in a race.

What was your recovery period during your mile repeats?  if it was more than 1-2 minutes active recovery, you're going too fast.  The mile is too long for an 'I' workout...that's why there isn't even a time listed (for us slowpokes, anyway) on JD's pacing chart.

Don't get me wrong...I'm probably the last person to scold anyone about doing mile repeats (descending ones are my favorite ), but I know now that the injury risk and recovery cost are too high.

How are you feeling today?

yeah, how are you feeling? a bit sore, just like a race, I'd bet...please recover enough after that w/othe good news is that all this piling on will force you to remember to be dogmatic about goal paces/splts and prescribed rest timesthe added good news is that you've got some seriously untapped speed in your legs and once you are actually recovered, you are going to crush a 5K race very soon!I can't wait to read that RR
I'm actually feeling pretty good today. I do feel it but thank God no injury or strains and today is a swim day. I really appreciate the opportunity to share some of these workouts and get lots of great advice and feedback. You would be surprised how much you guys are in my head as I workout. It's like having a team and coach out there with me. In fact, as I was reflecting last night, I'm going to blame Adrienne for the 6:40. I noticed that I was coming back on my heels a little so I tried leaning forward more (per her comment yesterday). My leg turnover and stride improved pretty dramatically and I just went with it. It's been a great week and will be an even better weekend.

Your story is amazingly similar to my first three years coming back into tri's though my injuries were more self-inflicted. About the same placement in AG. The human body is very adaptive though and given time, patience, and hardwork there is little you cannot overcome. Sounds like you are going about it smartly with ramping up slowly and consistently. It took me about a year of run focus and I finally feel like I'm getting over the hurdle. Sounds like you have made amazing progress with the swim and bike so keep building on that as a strength. The run will get there.

Thanks everyone.  Even though we've just been reacquainted, Ibuprofen and I are becoming great friends!  I went from being able to walk with moderate pain to feeling like I can sprint a 40 yd dash.  I'll be evaluating this.

For Fantasy football fans, I'd list myself as questionable for my runs this weekend.  It will come down to a gametime decision.

Just a quick accountability check before the weekend....I've done ok this week. Not great but better than before I joined in.  The ice-cream consumption is down but the frozen chocolate covered bananas made a guest appearance. Oh well. I've gotten my easy runs done and did a decent amount of strength/glute work so all is good.  Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Just wanted to drop in to say that I've been lurking for a while and really enjoy all of the discussion here. I may not be participating per se in this thread (though I guess I am right now), but I've started the challenge alongside ya'll and I think it's paying dividends already. I generally get my SBR workouts in, but also need to continue to work upper body and abs/back. So, since the challenge has kicked-off, I'm doing some upper body exercises one day and abs/back the next - probably 10 minutes per day (in addition to my SBR sessions) and I'm starting to feel the benefits. So, long story short, thanks for the challenge...I guess I needed the swift kick in the pants to get started and stay focused.

And since it's just 11pm now, it's about time to get my 10 minutes of abs done, so off I go.

Have a great weekend.

+1 for me. I needed this to get be back to core and/or strength.

Switch, of course you can call me Pink.

Yesterday was a fail unless I can count my post-run stretches. But also another weakness of mine is getting my race pace runs done and yesterday I did the run and kept a steady, hard effort but I was very slightly above race pace.

Today's run was fun. Garmin showed 46+ miles in 2:25:xx. It definitely showed me that I've got to get a replacement watch but crap, it was fun - especially when I was "running" 1 min miles. Also had a lucky break. Was runninig toward the cars in a bike lane and one azzhole suv who was riding someone else's bumper came so close to the me that his mirror barely missed me. I stopped, threw up my hands, and turned around to ask him what his problem was. I know that he saw me and my EXTREME displeasure. But he didn't stop and attempt to kick my butt. Obviously he drives a big butt vehicle to compensate for a little something else. Jeez! I hope he doesn't kill someone. He would have clipped a bike if a bike had been there at that time.

Going to do my crunches and planks while watching some ballgames. Have a good weekend all.

30 minutes running on the trails yesterday.....so much fun!! I bought two new pairs of trail running shoes and wanted to try each pair, so I did about 1.5 miles in each. I really like one pair, and will try the second pair again (wasn't loving them at first, but started liking them toward the end, so don't want to write them off without really giving them a chance).

25 minutes running with my dogs this morning, followed by a (brutal) VO2max trainer ride -- focused on both weaknesses today!

Oh, and I went to my chiropractor who does ART for me yesterday -- we worked on my left hip, IT Band, and hamstring. I'm going to him every couple weeks for general maintenance and doing a lot of stretching and foam rolling between. Hoping to really stay on top of this stuff so I can continue to run and make some good progress over the next few months.

Bounced back today.  I paid careful attention to my form, but I got through my 6.7 mile run fine and nailed my paces.

The ankle felt like it was 88% today, and I should be close to 100% tomorrow.

Originally posted by LarchmontTri Just wanted to drop in to say that I've been lurking for a while and really enjoy all of the discussion here.

Hey, silly, don't lurk--join!

No pressure, but we would love to have you in the group if that is good for you.

Pink--nice job on the runs and your strength work.  Garmin flutters are always fun;)

Nicole-plant with the chiro and ART sounds really good, and you're being good about the foam rolling and stretching too.  Confession: I have never foam rolled :/Do you find that the softness of the trail is better for your running than pavement?  Does the uneveness or unpredictability of the trail ever bother your knee?

Matt--Good news on that ankle, bro.  I love the 88% analysis, btw.  Hilarious.  Glad it didn't slow you down :)

I went for a run today. Nice and easy for 5.5 on the country roads by my home.  It went pretty well after the initial warm-up, but I think the uneveness in the gravel perturbs my proprioceptors, peroneals and whatever this thing is in my lower leg.  It feels OK right now, but I could definitely feel it at moments on my run.  So weird.  It's like overnight I developed weak ankles and lower leg instability and fatigue. WTH? I'm staying on top of ibuprofen and have some compression going. Bleh.

On a more positive note, I am in love with swimming right now, and I am so grateful to have something feel like it's clicking.  I have to put in another plug for Sheila Taormina's book Swim Speed Secrets.  The pictures are just awesome.  I have dropped 10seconds off my hundred in that time and am already faster than I was after an 8 week 18-20K/week focus at the end of last spring.

While I have been trying to not get bummed about my leg and lack of running, the swimming focus is a boon that I hope I will be able to maintain once I pick the running back up.  This has, once again, reminded me to "make lemonade out of lemons" (I can hear my grandmother saying it) and turn a negative into a positive.

Foam rolling hurts so good -- I highly recommend! It was, honestly, pretty brutal at first, but after you get things worked out and it becomes about maintenance, I actually think it feels really good.

The trails are better on my joints. The give you get from running on trails is much better than running on asphalt or pavement. And the unevenness of the trails really requires you to pay more attention to foot placement. I pay attention more and feel like things just go better on the trails....I also manage to trip myself up on flat sidewalks or whatever way more often than I do on the trails. I do, however, take it slow (sometimes even walking) on the downhills -- downhills are what hurts my knee the most.

Nice work on the swim!! Taking 10 seconds off your 100 time is huge! Have you ever plateaued somewhere and then practically overnight the time comes down? Or is it a gradual thing for you? I was stuck for a relatively long time at one pace, and just recently I seem to have dropped about 10 seconds off paces I can hold. Very rewarding when that happens -- good to see you're making lemonade out of lemons

I had a track workout las night. Mile repeats at a "Nice relaxed 12K pace" where we worked with our group, surging on the straightaways. The back person would run to the front of the line. Just like elementary school.

Our coach said, as a team, we were weak in the area of not closing the gap in XC competition and this drill would help with that. So, speaking of working on weaknesses

But I only did 3 repeats and called it a night in hopes that I will have something left for our race Saturday. Today I did some easy running and then core and abductor strength.

Slacker

what do you do for abductor exercises?  I can't think of the last time I specifically worked them.  I guess some fire hydrants, which do hurt like a mofo, but I haven't done anything else.  Suggestions?

Good luck tomorrow Salty!

Side lying leg lifts are my favorite abductor exercise. And thank you!!!! I had the race of my life!!! You know when you dig really deep and catch a glimpse of how much is still left, untapped?

It sounds like you have a very common condition that many runners and triathletes experience called patello-femoral pain syndrome. We have seen that runners with core weakness experience this.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

One year ago I weighed 238 lbs. and got winded walking up one flight of stairs - literally. I ran across a brochure for a triathlon...hmm. It seemed like an impossible task, but I was intrigued.

So how do you turn a weakness into strength? It begins with effecting a fundamental change to your triathlete self-image.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
