Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() fattyfatfat - 2010-01-03 3:00 PM SSMinnow - 2010-01-03 2:16 PM So here is my question of the day: I am trying to learn bilateral breathing and my left side is my weak side. I feel like I raise my head to get a breathe and have a crazy kick to keep me afloat. Single arm drills do not seem to help me get over this issue. What else can I do? i'm sure robert will have some good tips. i don't know if this is a good idea or not but what if you hold onto the wall, stretch your arms out and kick like you normally would. breathe left right left right etc... it seems that this would at least help out with the sensation of breathing left while maintaining a normal kick. of course assuming you do normally kick. i dunno. maybe its a bad idea. i have a swim stroke analysis on wednesday. using dartfish 3d motion. i'll ask them if they have any ideas for you. and then i'll post my video's up here for all of you to laugh at. ;-). I was going to suggest something along those lines... Grab a kickboard and hold it out front and kick for 50-100 yards with your head in the water breathing only to your weak side. A lot of it is just practice and forcing yourself to do something that doesn't feel right -- so the suggestion of swimming a length only breathing to that side is a good one. Make yourself do that several times each time you swim, for whatever distance you choose. Outside of the pool, you could also just lie down on your tummy with your arms at your side and turn your head and rest it to the "weak" or "off" side and just lie there for a few minutes. I do think the muscles get tense (or don't stretch as well) on our off side. But if you did that for a few minutes each day it might help a bit too? |

I had a drill last week where I had a kickboard and fins, hold on with right arm, left arm at side. It was supposed to be for rotating but I used it to find that sweet spot where I can just breathe in and held it there the whole way. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pity Party Alert...you have been warned Went out today for the scheduled 10 miler...so far so good...then life rears it's head and I had to call my training partner and bail because I HAD to take care of this situation right away. Life, life, life.....3 hours later I head to the River to get the run in. Start out fine and it is about 29 degrees with wind-chill of around 14. First 2 miles are awesome but maybe a little fast...then the fun began.... Quads are trashed from some stuff I did earlier in the day...excuse #1 With the sweat I worked up I am freezing my a$$ off...excuse #2 It is almost totally dark and I still have 4 miles of trail to get back to the car....BIG excuse #3 A friend passed by in their car and offered water...and said "You look frozen". excuse#4 I'm running by myself and processing the life's event from earlier...excuse #5 So I get in the car and ask them to drop me off at my car. Got 6.1 in which isn't bad...but I let my training/accountability partner down, I didn't get the 10 in and my mental toughness took a shot to the groin today. Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Reno, you can only do so much. I don't know the story, but I say forget about it and move on. Your partner will understand. And none of us get all of our workouts in. The bowling team remains undefeated (barely). The cool part was I found an open gate at Memorial Stadium (IU's football field) so the kids and I went down to the field and took a couple pics. I've never been on field turf - the stuff rocks. Tiller has the same animosity towards IU that I do, but enjoyed a little trot on the field anyhow. Not quite as cool as running the bases at Wrigley this past summer, but still pretty cool. |

Also it is important that I did take care of the LIFE issue that came up instead of putting it off. The reason I even posted this is that by doing so I have basically "said it out loud" and by doing that I have no reason, now, to beat myself up. It is, what it is and it is over. I did make some excuses but that is in the past and I will run my scheduled runs this week and move on. You recommended Running Within last year when I was training for the Disney Marathon and I got it then and it is a great book. I was looking for it the other day and I know I have it just have to find it after my move....I will get back to it and read it again. And I REALLY do know you said this lovingly...that is what makes a good MG...a GREAT MG. Steve |

But they're sealed, so I figured I might as well eat them now and be done with it. Well, they kinda taste funny but not really bad, so I'm thinking they're okay. Will I regret this? Does hummus have a definitive expiry date, even when sealed and refrigerated? Sorry if you now think I'm gross for eating it anyway! don't eat it. BUT you still have options. here this might be the best question of the MG to date. hahahaha i love it... i'm eating it anyway. this is awesome!!!!!

The Pity Party.....it's a rap. What Reuben said... Sometimes life gets in the way -- real life, real things, really messes things up, but it's what matters. Great for you for getting out and doing what you did. Don't beat yourself up. I had life mess me up on an intense workout last year. I had to finish the workout simply because it was a run and I had to get home. But life got in my head and I had a mental breakdown (complete with crying fit) about an hour into my run. It was all I could do to get home (much walking), with my head spinning. But in that time I made a plan to address the issue and went from there. To this day, every time I run by that stretch of trail I remember that run. It sucked. But I'm sure it made me stronger -- more mentally than anything else! |

Did you say your country club or your gym has a rule about sleeves? ![]() Today was the best. I get to my health club and the parking lot is packed. I think "crap, the pool will be a zoo". nope, me and two old guys....another day of a lane completely to myself and it is peak resolutioners season. What's up with that? So here is my question of the day: I am trying to learn bilateral breathing and my left side is my weak side. I feel like I raise my head to get a breathe and have a crazy kick to keep me afloat. Single arm drills do not seem to help me get over this issue. What else can I do? Exaggerate your roll on that side until you get more comfortable with it. That way you are able to get a little longer to get a good breath of air. Also make sure you have a good strong stroke and make sure you are not breathing out tooo early. Once your air is gone you sink. |

Member![]() | ![]() I did my first swim workout today. I believe it was the first time that I have been in pool in 20 year to just swim laps. It felt great, I'm sure that I looked like an idiot, and that is the main reason why I have waited so long to try it. It has never been the fear of swimming or the fear of not being able to do it, it has been the fear of look so stupid while trying. I jump a huge mental hurddle today. I got thought that planned workout, (700 yd's) but it wasn't pretty. On a high note I can't wait for my swimming lesson on Tuesday, I have so many questions. Ben |

Chisago one is too close to Black Fly and that is the only one I can find. We realized that we really need to go visit my dad in MN since we haven't been in a couple years and we are travelling to 2 races already. Other WI guy piping in here....I would recomend the Ripon Medical Center Tri in Green Lake WI on Aug 1. Great event, been around for several years and no swim in Lake Michigan (which even us locals dread....cause I don't care when it is, it is cold. For example last year in the Bradford Beach Tri in August some people got early hypothermo because they weren't wearing wetsuits). Green Lake is a beautiful place to visit and family vacation and won't be freezing in August. I know there are couple of races on the other side of the state, check out the race log and PM me if you have any questions on those races, its been a few years but I used to live on that side of the state before we moved over to Milwaukee. Safe travels, Dino |

I feel like I raise my head to get a breathe and have a crazy kick to keep me afloat. Single arm drills do not seem to help me get over this issue. What else can I do? Suzy, What worked for me was forcing my first breath on every lap to be on my uncomfortable side and really focusing on your rotation and "armpit breathing" on that breath. This makes sure you are using your uncomfortable side more often when swimming laps. I breath every third stoke and rotate sides so the breath on one side by lap didn't work for me without causing me to feel like I was going to hyperventilate. By "armpit breathing" I mean mentally concentrate on your head rotation towards your armpit for that breath...it forces you to keep your head down. I know it sounds funny but it works. Let the smarta$$ comments begin! Honestly, if you really focus you work on that breath after about a month you won't remember which is your good side or bad side. Good Luck Dino |

Tiller has the same animosity towards IU that I do, but enjoyed a little trot on the field anyhow. Not quite as cool as running the bases at Wrigley this past summer, but still pretty cool. you didn't pee on the 50? THAT would have been a bonding moment. |

It helps to put this out there and I will do so in my blog.....it just helps me type this because if I do that I won't sit here and kick my own a$$ the rest of the night. The Pity Party.....it's a rap. Steve..... I sit here in a quandry.....part of me wants to say "it's ok, don't worry about it, there will be other runs", the other part of me says "sissy ![]() Here is what I say, shake off the run, but take away the lesson. If you aren't in physical pain or danger, getter it done! or you will be kicking yourself later. If you need mental training....seek out the book Running Within. It'll make you more of a warrior and less of a sissy pants ![]() Your friend (really) Suzy That is sooooo AWESOME.....HTFU I am proud of the fact that I went ahead and did as much of the runas I did. Also it is important that I did take care of the LIFE issue that came up instead of putting it off. NO! This isn't HTFU! This is life first. The rest including those 6.1 is a bonus. AWESOME JOB!!!!! |

Ben this is great! my biggest fear when i first wore a jammer last december was walking from the pool deck to the water. a guy I swim with knew this and was there the first time i wore it. i was so nervous. i took a deep breath took my shorts off and started walking to the pool. he yells out as loud as he could, look at john in his speedo. oh my. lemme tell you, it don't embarass easily... but i was moritified! now, ha! if i could wear my jammers to the office i would. i'll tell you my flip turn story another day. errrr i mean when i can actually do them without hitting my head on the bottom of the pool. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just got done doing my TT test using my Kinetic trainer and average speed to calculate wattage. Will see in a few weeks when the PT gets here, but I resulted in a FTP of 260, just about smack dab where I expected it to be, I started a bit hard, and then dipped down in the middle, hopefully will retest in a month or so. It gives me somewhere to start and use as a benchmark for the year, I am excited to see the gains in 2010! |
