kkcbelle - 2010-12-02 6:56 PM Thanks to John for helping me, I am so proud to share a picture of my favorite 10-year-old from his race last weekend. How cute is he?!! (Proud mama for sure! That's me behind him in the hat -- letting him run his own race, but there cuz he wanted me there.) We are looking for a spring 5K for him... Run, buddy, run!!!

Great picture! What a cool kid!

Plainsman AU - 2010-12-02 3:31 PM Good Luck to the Vegas Gang.

Run fast and win lots of money!

I had an AWESOME experience today with my leg and back.  Went to Atlanta to see a chiropractor that practices ART and Graston.  Small one man operation that works with athletes and was on the ironman ART roster.

Great guy, but let me tell you ... that Graston technique is incredible...I think.  Felt like that dude was scraping the top layer off all my tendons in the leg and lower back.  I feel really good right now, and he could see why I was so tight.  I hope it helps.

Awesome news, Barry... My husband is battling a hamstring injury that also played a part in his back going out this past weekend. He's working, for the first time, with a true sports PT (who specialized in triathletes!) on all of the problems that contributed to both the hamstring issue and the back. The guy overseeing all of his care said he was a ticking time bomb and on a collision course and was lucky he hadn't had worse injuries sooner.

Now my husband is turning to me for motivation tricks to make himself do his exercises. HTFU, Just Do It, and "How'd you enjoy spending Thanksgiving immobilized in bed," aren't working so well, ha ha!! I reminded him no one would do it for him, and that if he wanted to be running again and remain injury-free, he needed to do this work. Maybe I'll fire up some Foo Fighters for him!!

Just tell him that if he doesn't do his exercises that next time you run together, you will be out in front of him instead of him running 10 steps ahead of you!

Any on the ground reports from Vegas today?  How is the weather.

With no heat in the house right now I would like to live vicariously through people that are in warm weather.

Thanks for all the inspires for my race this weekend.  I am looking forward to it, but a bit nervous trying to figure out stuff like what to wear (going to be in the 40's at race start), wear a fuel belt or not?, pacing, etc, etc, etc.

Good luck to the Vegas racers.....both in the casinos and on the race course!

Great pic Kyla!  That is great shot and a wonderful memory.

Assuming you guys are having similar weather as we are having here in NC you have got to be freezing.

It was around 50 on our main level this morning and 63 upstairs (since we had electric heaters running in all 3 bedrooms)

Of course the guy called this morning and the place that sells parts for our boiler doesn't anymore so he's searching around for parts...

I love living in an old house.

Oh, his everday Merrills... Which have worked just fine for him! We keep talking about buying him some running shoes but haven't yet. He's trying the minimalist thing from the get-go!!

40's is definitely capri weather.

I always carry some fuel for races. Lately it's in the form of Gu Chomps and I just keep 'em in a pocket or hold 'em in my hand. I take water from the course.

You will do GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weather in Vegas now is about 45 but should get into the mid 60's so it should be great for racing.

kkcbelle - 2010-12-02 12:06 PM Real question!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a bunch of good interval-based trainer workouts for later on when I am training more intensely on the bike, but for now I am just riding about one time a week, for about an hour, mostly for x-training/recovery. I'm just wondering if you guys have some favorite workouts for the lower-level trainer rides?

Currently most of the time I just warm up, do some single-leg drills (1 min. left/1 min. both/1 min. right/1 min. both), some spin-ups (2 min. @90 cadence/2 min. @100 cadence/1 min. @110 cadence), and some overgear work (2 min. @90 cadence/2 min. overgear [slower cadence]/1 min. standing). I usually listen to the radio, so sometimes I'll just do a DJ's special and ride to the beat of various songs -- keeping it as easy or as hard as I feel at the time. That's kinda fun.

What do you do for 60-90 min. on the trainer when you don't really care as much about intensity???

Aerobic power 1 (56 minutes)
15 minutes – Warm up (increasing intensity)
 6 x (4min high intensity + 2min low intensity)
5 minutes cool down

if you want to go longer throw in your single legs drills also

or

- 5 minute warm up
- 3:30 fast pedal rotation 100+ .. very easy gear
- 3:30 med cadence 85+/- medium gear
- 3:30 slower cadence 65+/-. sitting 2 min standing 1:30.. hard gear like climbing a hill.
- 3:00 free spin (catch your breath) drink!!!
- 3:30 fast easy gear 95+
- 3:00 med cadence 85 ish
- 3:00 slow 65 cadence
5 minute light spin break
redo above except for 5 minute warm up

Should be a nice easy ride for you. I do the second one to a specific music track and try to keep pace with the music.

shorts and a wicking top.   Old sweats that you can leave at the start if you're really chilly.  They may be there when you return, maybe not.   Good Luck!

Kyla--love the photo....too funny on the shoes.  I was wondering the same thing.

Linda-everyone knows the whole internet plane thing is just a farce, right?  I'm more irked tha Fatty didn't text me!

Tomorrow is a big day.  I am attending my first two hour yoga workshop.  Like Doug, it was time for me to bite the bullet and address my body issues.  This is the first step in trying to make this old jalopy run well for 365 straight days.  Speaking of cold, it was -2F WC here today and we have 6" of snow on the way tonight.  I knew it would eventually get here (blech!)....I guess we'll see how well Coop potties in a snowbank!

Race well MG!

And I got to run this morning at O-dark-thirty!  No complaints about the weather because I was just happy to be cleared again to begin to run whenever I wanted from my minor tendinitis   Laughing.... makes me realize that I don't know how anybody handles being severely injured and not being able to train (thinking of ya Doug!).  Still no intervals or downhills for me but a solid 4+ mile effort on one of my favorite paths through the park.

AND IT WAS COLD....but I HTFU (just for you Suzy) and got it done!!!  Still much better than running on any dreadmill!

Anybody know why I always get a cold A$$ when running outside when the temps dip below freezing?????? It doesn't seem to matter what I wear, if I over or under-dress, my A$$ is always freezing at about mile 2?  Some scientific reason for this??

Yup. It's fat. The blood doesn't get there and warm it up. It's sort-of a fun experiment (if you're into that sorta thing) to come home and feel various places on your body and see what's warm and what's cold. It tells you where you have fat layers. I won't name where my various spots are, but there are several. (And no, John, not my boobs -- not nearly enough fat there.)

And Steve -- no, not a shot on the capris at all. I know something went down involving you and capris but I don't really know what it was. Anyone who has seen Steve's legs in person will agree that he can wear whatever the heck he wants anytime he chooses. Just don't do a cold OWS with him unless you want to see an alien trying to work its way out of his lower leg!!

Party on, Vegas peeps!! Send frequent updates!!

Yeah, I know.  I've seen your a$$ a time or two (fully clothes Fatty), but it was all I could come up with on such short notice!

I actually have the same issue so maybe its a muscle gets colder than fat argument!
