bzgl40 - 2012-11-06 6:14 AM I think I will do a 30 min test to get virtual power on the trainer again this morning.  They do not have my trainer in TrainerRoad and there is no power curve for it out there but I figure if I just pick one from what they do have and keep using it then it should work for my needs.  That is my theory anyways

What kind of trainer do you have ?

gsmacleod - 2012-11-05 12:56 PM  You could also do this in a similar way I break up the 40x50 set: 20x50 with every 4th fast 15x50 with every 3rd fast 10x50 with every 2nd fast 5x50 all fast All on :55 Shane

I hate you Shane

OMG that was tough.  I got through the 15x50 every 3rd fast ok, but everything after that was murder.  Especially transitioning to the last 5 all fast and I was starting to fade.

But now that I conquered 50x50, I guess I just need to do 12x200 fly

Nice!

I have to say I've been sceptical of the usefulness of the watches that record swim data but that is actually kind of cool.  Do you have to start and stop each 50 for it to record them like that?

That's super cool.  I was hoping that the 910 data would look kind of like that for pool swimming.  I'm curious as well if you set the intervals in advance or hit lap each time.

Arend - consider one of these.  The K-edge was originally designed by a team mechanic for a rider on a cervelo TT bike.  After dropping the chain and having it wedge into my frame for the 3rd time this year on the weekend, I'm ordering one.

I can't go to Probikekit.  It's like Costco, you can't get out of there without spending hundreds of dollars!

Bought one last night.  Every time I see the scratches on my frame I tear up...

Well now you guys have me shopping.....

So on that note, I am going to replace the brakes on my P3, should I also replace the cables and housing?  I have the brakes already but would need to buy the cables and housing if needed.

It is a Travel Trac i-Force.  This was before iPhones though...  It is a Millennium V trainer and I see they have two out there in Beta.  I am not sure they match up correctly since Performance changes their trainers so much but likely close enough.  Not sure what the difference between their level 1 and level 2 is but on well

axteraa - 2012-11-06 8:18 AM Marc, how did the UPS shipping turn out?

I did not see the bill yet but it was about 15% of the total invoice. So I don't know it's

GST + provincial tax (I think they call it HST now)

or GST + brokerage. I assume the first which is reasonable.

I had it next day.

The brokerage fee is usually some insane amount that comes to way more then the 15%.  You'll always get the taxes so it break it out.  Sounds like you made it through without that fee.

Yeah, I had to hit the start at the beginning of each lap, and stop at the end.  Also hit the lap button in between as per DC Rainmaker's advice.  PITA, but I wanted to at least see the data once.  So I had my 910 on my wrist and a sport watch (set at 55 seconds x 50 intervals) on the pool deck.  The pool I go to is pretty empty, but I stood out as a triathlete like a sore thumb...LOL.

So you press start when you push off, stop at the end and lap while resting ?

The swimsense was cool. It figured this out auto-magically. The only problem was it took about 10secs to figure it out so it was fine on 100s with 10s rest but would not work on intervals with less rest

So far I like the 910. TSS and NP are cool.

Correct.

I would think that there are a list of things that Garmin "should" be working on in the next firmware update.

1. Figure out how to do things like the Swimsense so you don't need to hit the start/stop and lap button.

2. Add workout creation capability for swimming.  They already have it for running and biking, and if anything, swimming is the one sport that is highly workout based.  I see no reason why you can't program a workout into the 910 that has your WU, MS, and CD all with rest intervals.

Either way...I'm pretty happy with it.

When I actually had access to a pool....  I only ever hit lap.  I never did the stop thing.  So that way it recorded my rest intervals.  And to the best I can figure out that is what Garmin intended.  So I am not sure why the whole stop thing.  I can see if you do things that might cause Garmin to think you are doing something other then resting but I find hanging on the side of the pool panting doesn't cause an issue

Yeah...I might give that a try.  Just wasn't so sure how sensitive it was if I moved my arm around while resting if it would record more distance during my RI.

Twice.  Once to stop my interval, and again to start the next one and end the rest.  If I am doing anything like a kick set or anything I still did the same even though it wouldn't record distance but I at least got time.

HAHAHA that's good. I actually really like fly and I'm good at it (as in, IM good, not as in fly good). I'd be okay with 12x200 alternating free and fly, but all fly is just ridiculous!

A lady in the Swimming Hall of Fame did the Triple Crown (English Channel, Catalina, Manhattan Island Marathon) ALL FLY. Now THAT is nuts.

Hm. Maybe I'll do my main set tomorrow as some repeats of 100 free @interval, 50 fly @interval.

Actually, there really isn't any drill or method or anything that improves my free more than doing fly. I think that's because, as you were saying about running, right now it's my swim muscular endurance holding me back. I can do barf-inducing sets for a long time but it's my shoulders, delts, traps that give out first.

I'm generally training for races that are, or involve, 13.1 or longer.  (My shorter races are for fun, or for tune-up.)  So I generally reserve progression for longer runs (8-10 miles earlier in the preparation, 10+ miles later), but I'll sometimes do a shorter run along the lines of what Rusty posted, especially if I haven't done any intensity for a while and I'm feeling frisky.  Those are great workouts to 'ease into' what turns out to be a pretty hard run.  The recovery cost is high, but not horrible.

Mostly, I do three types of progression run.  I think I stole these from McMillan a while back, but I'm not sure.  Anyway, his site is a great read.  (I'm pretty sure I made up the names.)

Uh ... I think I'll just go and do my 12x200 fly, thankyouverymuch

Great detail, food for thought, and LMAO at the names.

Trying to catch on the back of the pack... been busy and was away for the weekend in Cambria, CA, one of my favorite places.

On the weight challenge thing, I've been counting calories for about the last month.  I started at 210.  Dipped below 200 last week, now hovering right above 200.  I am frustrated trying to get sub 200, but definitely doing something wrong because calories in/out on a weekely basis should be losing.  Right now at 204 and change.

My older brother was an alcoholic, my older sister into weed, so by the time I came around my single mom said she ain't putting up with another little sh**, so I took up food, primarily sugar, as my drug of choice.  Food is more about emotion than fuel for me.  Something I need to change, or try to change.

But BarryP is going well.  Last two weeks were about 30 mpw, this week going to 33 and see how the volume works. Calves, which have traditionally been my achilles heel (ironically) are tight, but holding up well.  Had my massage therapist spend some extra time there last night

And Jason good job on the 50s.  I was going to post that you should expect that it is going to hurt WAY more than you expect it will near the end, but seems you found that out all on your own

Chris, how close are you to your ideal weight you figure?  The closer you get to that range the harder calorie counting is to make work.  There can be a lot of +/- in there, with how much you burned to how much you really are eating (even if you measure).  I'm not saying don't count calories but when I got to a certain point it just didn't work for me anymore.  I really stalled.  So now I no longer count.  I just listen to my body and I only eat foods that are not packaged.  So far it is working for me.

Pffft, Cambria is one of MY favorite places--loved your pic of the Neptune Pool at night did you have any ollalieberry pie or wine?

And quite belated, but super congrats on becoming a skinny batch!!!

One day, I'll stumble back in those footsteps ... priority is just surviving peak training for IMWA and hopefully finishing, for the next month.

Kimberly said something important, and I'm sure you've figured this in, but ... calories out changes as you lose weight. It's not always proportionate to the weight.

It takes a lot of energy to just haul a larger body around during the day and fuel all its tissues, not to mention during exercise. To my great dismay, although it is nice being much smaller than I was, it takes an awful lot less energy to haul less weight around and oxygenate the tissues ... even 5-10lb seems to make a disproportionate difference. Almost like, say, a 5% body weight loss actually means you get to eat 10% less calories Yell
