5,000 miles from home

Fink week 4 is history. So far all is well even though the temperature was 3f when I set out for my run. It was actually fine with three layers, big socks, fleece coat, fleece gloves, and a ski mask...not sure if I looked more like the michelan man or a bank robber but the workout was completed.

Good luck to everyone doing the Tour of Sufferlandia this week, it sure looks challenging. I will be doing a few stages with you, but won't get to completely share in the suffering. Are those of you doing this going to be running and swimming as well?

heykev - 2013-01-27 1:49 PM  Thanks for all the advice.  I was worried it might have been old age!!! I never even thought about the slick conditions. First time I ever ran in stuff like that. I have been trying to up my long run by two miles a week and my short runs staying around 30 to 40 minutes. Guess I'll give it some rest then give it heck again.

Generally as your long run miles go up your shorter runs need to go up as well, otherwise your mileage on those runs just is not sufficient to back up that long run.

Yes, everything tends to go up. It's for both the weekly total and so there isn't a huge disparity between something like the long run and everything else. Also, 2 miles a week seems like a pretty big jump. It can be done once, some might get twice in a row, but that's kind of big to keep doing continuously.

I'll be strength training and running (although you can't tell from my actions this weekend).  I'll probably dial back the running though, mostly due to time.

FWIW, my final build to an IM run often looks like 12-14-16-18-20, though I do repeat a couple of those, and I'd normally back off once or twice to eliminate the weekly long run. So it isn't entirely 2 miles per week increase. (So more realistically something like 12-14-16-8-16-18-8-18-20 depending on overall fatigue.) However, that's also running 40mpw at the start, up to 50 or more by the end. I do tend to exceed the 'long run no more than 30%' rule but only a bit and only in the final build. I think it is hard to avoid doing so during the final IM build, at least for amateur athletes who cannot realistically run 60mpw while still training bike and swim at IM levels.

No kidding. A few days ago we had a low of 9F and a high of 23F. My husband uses the weather as support for his argument that no one should live in Kansas. It is crazy, one extreme or the other.

I did a trainer ride tonight and I had so much pain during my attempt to clip-out I had to use my hand on the shoe.

Had a (surprise) swim fitness assessment at Masters tonight. 900 warm-up then 1200 yds of stroke work. Then a 1500 swam as 500-400-300-200-100 w/20 sec recovery between each. Coach is going to use that to give us a baseline for pacing. Thoughts on this?

I think you should have had to do a straight 1500

Were the individual distances timed or just the total 1500?

The whole 1500 plus rest was taken. She'll factor out the rest and get our pacing per from there.

Ok, running question. Still getting ready for the marathon in a couple weeks.  Runs have been good until last week.  Started the swim lessons after a couple hours of getting home, went for my run and cramped up in the left leg.  Stretched and hydrated before going.  Today same thing. Two miles out right leg cramped and left ham string ( ham string went away).

Right leg is still sore after 10 hours.  Again, stretched and hydrated. Last weeks run I forced 17 miles and today just ten. Could it be I'm actually using leg muscles in the swim class the right way and the run is making them flare up?  I did 23 miles a few weeks ago and felt great. Go short and I'm falling apart.  Thoughts,

Another great swim lesson today. Worked on balance in the water. Pretty cool, it even worked.  My legs always went down before, now I can keep them level, with practice.

I assume that at this point you have begun tapering.  That's good.  Most likely you just have a lot of built-up fatigue and that is what is leading to your cramping.

Yes, the swim is contributing to that.  Your legs are toast for peak marathon training, then you swim for a while (which yes, can make them tired), and then you run on them.  I'm not surprised that you are cramping.

Taper, taper, taper!  It sounds like you have pushed yourself appropriately in your marathon preparation, so now's the time to reap the benefits by RESTING (mostly).

Thank you both for the input.  My hydration is on going. I'll drink at least 64 oz of water just at work and continue at home.  My pace yesterday was slow, just about 12 minute mile. We had a light coating of snow that they didn't plow just threw some sand on.  The roads were a little slick with that glaze so it was an easy run for pace and still had this happen.  Still sore today so going to do my stretching now, my short daily ride, then our cycling club banquet later this afternoon, easy day. Thanks

That slick coating could be contributing as well. Your muscles have to work harder to keep you stable. It's likely you'll be working some harder than they're used to in spite of reduced pacing It's hard to quantify this by pace. Really have to learn your effort or RPE.

Also not sure if this is everything. If it was on all the cramping runs, maybe. But as Yanti said, it would be helpful to see a bigger picture with logs.

And Yanti, who's Byron? Wink

ummmm your invisible alter ego ... brbriley *need to read posts better* *seriously need sleep*

Finished up Stage 3 of ToS this morning.  Seriously, Extra Shot with no warm-up (at 4am) is just cruel.  Felt fine cardio-wise, but my legs are definitely feeling it.  Here's to hoping that they'll be able to finish out this silly tour!

Good luck to everyone doing the Tour of Sufferlandia this week, it sure looks challenging. I will be doing a few stages with you, but won't get to completely share in the suffering. Are those of you doing this going to be running and swimming as well?

Not sure about everyone else, but I'm just riding.  The timing of the tour works out nicely for me, having just come out of knee surgery....not strong enough to run and not supposed to be letting the incisions soak in water (i.e. no swimming).

Reaction 1: Is the bike ok?

Reaction 2: Did anyone see that?

Kate, I've had things like the knee occur before, though it's been awhile. Yours might be different, but if I remember right, flexing basically my entire leg and twisting my body some so that the angle wasn't so big helped. The leg may or may not have been straight, can't remember. Hopefully that gets better soon enough.

Was that because you were short on time? I'd still try to get at least a few minutes as that one has none built in.

I've done similar to Ben with adjusting how I twisted to get out without pain.  Also, do you have cleats or pedals that allow you to adjust the tension required to clip out?  If you can, that may temporarily help with the pain while it heals up.

I'm sorry.  Maybe while it is sore take your foot out of the shoe rather than clipping out, just leave the shoes on the pedals.

Yep. I moved to the Overland Park area from Arizona as a kid.  Talk about hating life!  Moved to Kansas City in HS then to St. Louis in college and a few more years.  We get wicked thunder storms here and the occasional hurricane but I do not miss ice, snow and bone chilling wind!
