Short version:  Conditions were less than ideal.  40% of the trail was unrunable (deep mud, knee deep water), and it was cold and windy.  We did one (of three) laps which was just under 17 miles and called it a day.  I have another key race in three weeks and just couldn't justify trashing myself for this one.   On a positive note, it was a great training day and I had time to have lunch with my son, stop in and visit my dad, and have dinner with friends.

The best thing:  I'm not injured and should be back to my regularly scheduled training right away with no time off Laughing.  My first DNG, but I'm ok because I know it was the "smart" thing to do.

Good luck with your half marathon tomorrow, Bruce.

It was not as bad as last week. I thinkthe shorter distance played a part in that. I need to some how find a way to get out of my comfort zone, and finish a little stronger. I tell myself at this point pick it up but yet I never do it. I guess it is a fear thing?

Jayne,

Sometimes it is just not meant to be. Way to make something out of nothing and get a few miles in.

Today was actually a good weather day but many training session have been miserable because of mother nature

Good luck with your half marathon tomorrow, Bruce.

Sorry about the race Jayne but that sounds like a wise decision.  Those races are tough enough in good conditions.  Sounds like you have a solid plan for next race.  Can't wait to see you race hard there.  :-)

I survived my 10miler today.  Finished and accomplished both goals - kept my legs in good shape and stayed under 9 min miles.  I was pretty far off my 10mile PR but I had a 3+ hr. hard workout yesterday and for some reason thought I was 20 yrs. younger last night consuming way more adult beverage than I should have.

Here is my RR - it's been a long time since I've written one of these.

This was one of probably 20 different spots on my loop where there was standing water we had to go through.  Some spots had to be re-routed because the water was waist deep.  Knee deep water in 35 degree temps is enough.  The mud was so much worse than the water.  You couldn't get any good footing, and it just never ended.

My first DNF, but I keep telling myself that it was the smart thing to do.  I'm not injured and I can carry on with my training for Gnaw Bone in 3 weeks.  I hear it's a really challenging 50k course, and I need to be ready to rock and roll.  Maybe I'll have to give the JFK 50-miler a shot.  Sam, you ready to do it again?

Hey all,

Here is the race report. Do finish and dont finish last.

I also went and swam and bike the OLY course again. I got a little more comfortable in OW,still aways to go but felt comfortable at least after the first few 100s.

Well done Mike, horrible conditions Jayne, Fatty will be disappointed you didn't take he opportunity for some mud wrestling action though!

My bike is stuck in the LBS while they wait for parts so I had to grab my old bike off a friend last night. They're going to do the pre-race service this week but I hope I get it back soon! I had to work all weekend and I'm really cranky and irritable today and don't feel especially fit so I suppose I must be tapering...

After training for my first IM, I was super cranky during the taper, very similar to PMS.  Relax, your training is in the bag.

Great picture Jayne...looks miserable....although you look like you were having fun. Congratulations on doing as much as you did. I would have quit at the first sign of cold water. It was a smart decision to plug the plug.

Having a tough time staying up with the BT log. There never seems to be enough time in the day. I need a personal assistant .... any volunteers?

So I did a half marathon yesterday at Rutgers, awesome day with a lot of energy in the crowd and some nice tributes to Boston.

Forgot my Garmin so I was going blind as far as pace, and I felt like I had not trained as well as last year. Last year my plan was to go out slow and build and that worked well. This year I just went with how I felt. I was pleasantly surprised that I had a new PR by about two minutes.

I will post a race report when I can.....it was a perfect day to run and I felt pretty good throughout the race....hmmm just imagine if I trained

Congratulations to everyone else that raced.

I have no races scheduled for the rest of the year, personal life is making it difficult to plan. I think I am going to train as if I was going to do an Olympic in July just in case.

I am sitting on a plane on my way to LA and wishing I could get up and stretch....would be awesome if they offered massage therapy as flying perk....six hours sitting is not fun

Sam- Sounds like a fun night! Congrats on cranking out the 10 miler the next day and accomplishing your goals!

Mike- Congrats again on the race! Nice job getting in some training on the Oly course. Getting more comfortable in OW is an awesome thing!

Jayne- Love the pics! You look great, but the trail looks a mess. Did you lose any shoes? Smart decision pulling the plug. Congrats on doing 17 miles with a smile!

Bruce- Congratulations on the PR! Sometimes I think it's better to just go by feel and give it what you've got. Sounds like a fantastic day for you!

David- Can't wait to watch you kick azz this weekend!

oohhh not to sure about another 50miler any time soon.  I think I'd be scared to death of conditions like your pics.  I had a perfect race day on a pretty tame course.  I may be too "citified" for a hard core trail run. ;-)

Jayne, really amazing effort in conditions I cannot begin to imagine.  Glad you lived to tell...Gnaw Bone is an awesome name for your next race!

David, we all have been through that cranky taper thing, it's a wonder it only is happening this very last week!  I think I was unusually difficult to get along with for about 4 weeks!  Yikes, poor Kathy.

Sam, we only come around this way once, so if adult bevvies are calling your name, more power to ya!  Good job on your training and 10 miler!

Hope this week treats everyone well, it's beautiful out here on the left coast.  Truly sparkling day here!

Hi everyone. It's been quite awhile since I was able to touch base here. I've had a very busy year but now with the university up here out for summer things have slowed a bit and I can spend some time with my old mentor friends. Hope everyone is doing fine and that we didn't have anyone injured in Boston. I'm looking forward to a great year of triathloning and adventure racing this year. Good luck to everyone and enjoy yourselves out there

For those who don't know me I was the original Canadian "boy" in the group back several years ago.

Jayne: I think you did the right thing. That course looked pretty nasty. Love that pic.Sam: Nice job on the 10 miles.I had a really fun time doing the MS150 - it turned out to be 100 miles on Sat and 76 miles on Sun. Sat morning it was 39 degrees at the start, but it turned into a beautiful riding day. Sun was a little warmer and also gorgeous. The wind on both days was pretty calm and mostly from the back or side. The bike I borrowed was a 2005 Specialized Transition with roadie handlebars. The tri bike fit worked really well for me and I had no problems with my legs during or after the ride. All in all, it was a really great experience riding with the team of people from my sister's community. Many thanks to the people who helped by donating to MS.
