Most expensive lunch EVER!

I went home to meet the plumber.  I found a leak this morning at the control valve to me house.  Their estimate?  $5600...  Yay.  Add $7 to that for my lunch at Subway, and it marks a new high mark for money spend for lunch.

How do you ever really know when you are getting service, you aren't either getting completely ripped off, or if they are not suggesting more work than is really needed.

I'm sure they thought I was the biggest D-bag client ever, but at that price, I needed to be forcefull that I thought I was getting screwed and dropping almost 6k is not easy.  I asked them if THEY could afford 6k out of the blue and to put themselves in my shoes.  (of COURSE I could "easily" pay 6k, but I didn't want them to know it).

I took out some financing to get them started but will probably pay it all up front.  I had to say it was difficult for us.

And just because we CAN easily pay it, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.  There goes our big vacation plans for the next year or two...    No more trips to Europe and more trips to the inlaws or parents.  Joy.

Didn't you recently do this? I thought you ripped up the yard for plumbing last year or two?

same one.  happened in 2010, they came back in 2011 to repair their repair (for free this time).  It failed AGAIN but this time it was 2 months out of the warranty.

I guess they could just do a fix again, or replace the whole line and fix it for good.  OTOH, if they fix it for 1000, then have to fix it for free in a year again, I could do that for 10 more years and still not go over 5k!

I feel like I have been had.

On the upside, Subway made may sandwich perfectly.

That really sucks. Something like that shouldn't fail almost ever. It's a freaking plumbing valve and I would think metal ball valve? That should never fail.

Knock on wood; we've owned this house since 1996 and have had only a few minor septic issues. Changing from fabric softener to dryer sheets helped a lot.

Psyched about your sandwich win!

Last game of the week is tonight -- so ends the six-game-in-seven-day stretch of baseball. We've lost two in a row, which pretty much puts us out of the playoffs. Oh well, I am ready for the season to be over.

Holy crap.  Those valves should be able to go 50+ years without failing.  There are no moving parts, there is nothing in them to go "bad" by just sitting there.    If there is an issue with it, my guess is that they either installed faulty parts or did completely shoddy work (or didn't actually do anything at all the first times).   In either case, you should absolutely get a 2nd and 3rd opinion on this one.

Can you just have the city turn off the water and do the repair yourself?

The sandwich is a definite up-side to things. So, you've got that going for you!

Hell of a 24 hours.

Long story short.  I fired the plumber and explained the situation on the phone.  They guys were professional and nice, but I'm a civil engineer and talked to several contractors in the afternoon, other civils, and two other plumbers who gave me a rough quote for a new waterline at 2500 to 3000.

Even if I paid them half a day for digging half the trench, I would still save money by going with someone else.

I was out moving dirt this morning at 6am (after staying up to 2am due to stress) when I got a call from the regional manager from the current plumber.  I explained everything and why I fired them (due to cost, not professionalism).  He offered to work with me on the price and I was ready to still say no since in no way did I think they would cut 50%.  I was surprised and he said he would match the $3000.

I'm happy it worked out.  Sad I still have to even pay $3000, and mad that they so easily cut the price in half.  Obvioiusly they are not losing money, so they mark up everything double and probably assume most people don't have access to information like me or go through the effort and just pay it.

So they are rehired for half the cost.  Crazy.  Still too much and I will NEVER use them again after this.

I wish I could tell you all the things I said/told them.  I wasn't rude but also firm.  I thought it was good stuff, but way too long for a post.

Happy Friday Eve TAN!

I was having the crappiest day yesterday and feeling quite out of sorts when out of the blue one of the lawyers I work with sent me a $50GC to Amazon to thank me for all the great work I've been doing.

You have NO idea how much this meant to me and pretty much made me tear up since I've worked with a lawyer previously who would throw things at me (including a stapler), punch walls, punch cupboards, yell at me, yell at clients over the phone and even tried to argue with me that dog fighting is a legitimate sport.  I lost ANY AND ALL respect for the man after that one.  I found out a couple months ago that he's left the legal field completely and now manages a couple of MMA fighters.  Seems fitting, no?  Anyhoooo - the short version of the above is that I've never had the situation I'm in now, with someone actually appreciating the work I've done, and it almost brought me to tears - but in a good way.

Glad you stood your ground on this one - but I agree, never use them again if that's the kind of crap they're going to try to pull over on their clients.

@Dave - sounds like becoming unemployed is the best thing you could have done for yourself.  No job is worth dealing with that unless you have absolutely no other options.

A little over her budget, but on an ounce for ounce basis, a bargain. Besides, does this stuff go bad?
