man, how can y'all stand to be on the trainer for so long????
i literally CAN NOT sit there on the trainer for more than 30 minutes TOPS. it drives me crazy and literally will me off and i will not have a good workout at all. i cannot even fathom the idea of even thinking about maybe doing 2 hours on the trainer, let alone 5+!!!! y'all are crazy
Thank God I live in Texas and I can ride outdoors year-round (as long as the roads aren't iced over).  although i'm planning on investing in some rollers to see if i can tolerate them for the rainy winter days.

my IM training is going good. having a bit of knee pain on longer runs but it looks like worn out shoes are the culprit (as well as increase in mileage too). but i'll be picking up my new shoes tonight and hopefully the pain doesn't return. fingers crossed.
n

I live in Texas and love to ride my trainer for hours on end. No, I am not kidding.

It'll be a three week taper for me, so two more big weekends then I start to cut back.  The first weekend of taper still has a couple of significant workouts.  This friday is a race simulation - 3 km swim, 180 km bike, 15 km run, then saturday is a 30 km run (19ish miles).  The weekend after is 180 km ride on friday and 1 hour ride/25 km run on saturday.   Current forecast for my 180 km ride day low of 4C high of 10C  and sunny (for the americans, that is 39 and 50... ugh!  hope the forecast changes, I really don't want to ride my trainer for 7 hours.  10C or 50F has always been my temperature cut off for riding.

Per coach, my taper begins the weekend of the 23rd, but I think that will still be a long-ish ride.  Not 5-6 hours, but "just" 3-4 hours.  Funny how 3-4 hours isn't that long anymore.  It's all so relative.

Happy to report that I got in a 112 mile bike ride this past weekend.  It was 100% solo, in fact, I only saw 3-4 other riders the entire day.  It was a pretty lonely day.  Windy one too.  I know if I can do the 112 in pretty decent shape here by myself with no support, I can surely do the 112 in Florida.  It was quite the confidence booster.

This weekend is 4 hours and then 2:45 run.  Next weekend is 100 miles and 3 hour run (not on the same day, just the weekend).  Both this weekend and next will have a long swim in there too.

Like mimir98 said, I have moments where I say let's get this show on the road, but then other moments where I don't feel ready at all.  And, like others, I'm worried about my run fitness, but it is what it is pretty much at this point.  The long runs over the next two weekends will be good for me.

sorry to not check in lately. i am so impressed with all of your volume lately.

we had ironkids in st pete's florida and it was really awesome for the kids....and hot midday. i was pretty surprised how warm it still was there as georgia is dropping rapidly since oct 1.

we need to keep an eye on the temps/humidity and water conditions/temps now and get reports from the locals.

kathyg notes we are a month off. dont do anything stupid or brave now. get to the line in one piece ready to do battle.

It's been gorgeous here the past few days...lows in the 50's, highs in the high 70's/low 80's.  Though it was pretty windy out of the north on Sunday.  It would be nice on race day if the winds hold off until the second half...then you get to go out into light wind and come back with a strong tail!

Looks like the bike course has been changed. Anyone that has done it look at new course and have any comments on changes?

Someone suggested the bumpy crappy road is no longer part of the course.

Interesting about the bike course change.  My coach said something to me about hearing rumors of this the other day, and sure enough....

Typically which direction do the winds come out of in this area?  Do they come out of the south, off the ocean?  Or, does it really just vary?  I'm just more curious about it than anything else.

I saw some of you rode your trainers that long so i had a go for 5 hours last week and nearly killed myself. Haha I dropped 6.5lbs in 5 hours even consuming 120+ oz of fluids.

2 of 3 of my sherpas just backed out for understandable reasons. That hurt. Yes the nerves are kicking in. I wrote this to end my blog this am.

"I understand what needs to be done on race day and its just a matter of executing and the conditions being adequate. Its also a matter of getting to the start line healthy and ready to go. I need to be more careful now." Then I heard the evil laugh get louder too Jashac!

I rode the (original) course several times in August.  That out and back section of 388 on the new course was also on the old course and is quite bad.  You continually hit those joint cracks every 3 seconds that rattles your brain, shoulders, and bike.  Keep your water bottles in check for those 20 minutes!  That's the only bad/bumpy part.

Interesting.  And thanks for letting us know.  I check the site periodically, but hadn't noticed that.  Guess I'll be driving the course once I get there to check it out.

Holy crap.  I printed the course two days ago and it looked NOTHING like that.  Thanks for the heads up, Kathy since I assumed the one I printed was the changed one y'all were talking about.  I'd never seen the course before so I would not know the difference.

Riding it on Sunday...I will provide a report.  And I'll try to do a little driving around and see if I can figure out why they changed it.  Construction maybe?

It looks much more "out and back" now.  I understand that these roads are not typically closed to traffic.  But with an out and back wouldn't they have to close at least 79 and that part of 20 that is out and back to traffic????

Checked out the course changes in earnest last night. HUGE changes. Based on having doen teh course 3 times take it FWIW.  I am slow but I'm smart so there it is.  I qualify this as a lot of people dismiss what i have to say because I can't KQ.

The good
1-eliminates camp flowers road which you could loose a tooth on.
2-Takes us off a very busy highway ( 231 I think.  I suspect this may be the root of the course change)
3-Will most likely be more favorable wind

The Bad
1-Route 20 has the majority of the hills on the course and we will ride them twice now (I feel my dream of a sub 6 hour bike slipping away)
2-they took us back down a newly paved smooth as glass road which was heavenaly and that is off the course now

RE: wind patterns all three years I did the course I expereinced
1-GOing out front beach road (And coming back)  be careful.  THe wind whips off the beach and can take you bike out from under you esp if you are riding a disc.  You can catch a tailwind or head wind but the wind changes suddenly and also as tehre are lots of condos along the beach they act like wind tunnels either between or under teh bulidings.
2-Bascially head wind the first 50 miles.  the tail wind down 231 (Which has been eliminated) a littll more head wind here and there.
3-Looks like with the course change that there will be turns to keep us out of consistent sustained headwinds.
4-Anything is possible.

FYI looks like they are maintain the run course as it was last year with a loop thru the state park rather than an out and back.  It was PTICH BLACK back there for those of you who will be joining me in the BOP after dark.  I HIGHLY suggest getting a light for your hat or SOMETHING because being back there with nothing but a glow stick for light was not good.

Thanks for the advice/feedback on the course changes.  Short of driving the course upon arrival all I have is the race reports from past years.  I have read all of yours Sue.  Now that the course has changed, those of you familar with the area is all I have (and I assume I am not alone in this situation) are the input from those of you familiar with not only the old course, but the new course as well.

Looks like the winds are going to kick up here this weekend, so maybe I will throw the race wheels on and get some saddle time dealing with that.

jldicarlo - 2010-10-04 4:47 PM Has anyone done any riding on the course lately?  I'm trying to remember if the Wal-Mart has any signs up saying you can't park there unless you are a customer.  A lot of places near the beach get so picky about that.  I want to pre-ride the course on Sunday and don't want to get my car towed....

That Wal Mart parking lot is HUGE and I don't recall seeing any signs saying you couldn't park there. I doubt they would have an issue with you parking in it if you parked in the back of the lot. I'm a bit jealous of all of you, I took this year off and my last race was the 2009 IMFL. You hear a lot of people complain about the race but I love PCB and IMFL. The whole vibe of the area starting Wednesday leading up to the race is a blast.

Sue,

You are not slow on the bike, you are wise and you have done the course many times. Thanks for your input on what the changes on the course may mean.

I look forward to Jen's report back after she rides it this weekend.
