Great post Trevor! Totally agree.  I settled down regarding my injury after Bob went into the hospital the first time. Triathlon is important to me, but it shouldn't be my whole life and send me into such a tailspin.  There are times, even in this group where I start feeling behind like I am not fast enough or good enough, crazy really.....my main reason for moving from marathoning to triathlon was to bring some fun back into endurance training.  I have more of that mindset now although I am itching for that test run to go well tomorrow.  Mainly because I want to lace up those shoes and be able to rip off 10m without thinking about it, even if it is at a snails pace....I know that is many weeks away....

Re: Sugar, I used to sit and freak out over eating too much crap, now I focus on making sure I eat the good stuff first (min 5 F&Vs) and if crap sneaks into my diet and my BF% is still stable, I am ok with it.  Sounds like you are already eating fairly healthy foods so maybe it isn't such a big deal???

Doug--why the question on the splint?  sorta worried you might have an injury???? I got something similar when I had PF last year and it didn't do a thing for me.  Taping worked far better and I slept more soundly.

Thanks for all of your support regarding our friend Bob.  Still waiting on word of his condition.......

Suzy

Suzy your post about your hubbie's friend got my thinking tonight......
We are all for here for so many different reasons. I will leave the definition of 'here' for you to decide.
I just read to my oldest(4) and put her to bed. Seeing her and her sister sleeping makes my heart melt and I tear every once in a while watching them grow up. But seeing them grow up before my eyes is why I am here. I want to see them grow up. I want to see them succeed.I want to see them get married.
When I look at where I was 2 years ago with my health(FAT!!!), and where I am right now, its night and day. I'm not 'Thin', but I'm healthy. Still a slow runner, but as long as I beat Andy at Lonestar my mission is complete
Being 'here' has changed my outlook on life.

It's one of those things I guess. To piggy back off of steve earlier today - Sometimes we do take things for granted with our health or our family or how fast we can run a 5k or swim a mile. But really, who knows when things can be taken away from us. We need to enjoy what we have, we never know when lifewill throw us a major curveball. I mean major.
Suzy A good example right now is referencing you with your running. As a  runner, this last month or so must be so extremely hard on you.....But at the end of day, when you look at it....It's short term. So what if you can't run for a bit?? It's not literally going to kill you. Its all about perspective and I realize that now.
It's that sweating the small stuff phrase.
I tend to overthink things. I get upset at myself when I have a bad swim. Or crappy run. Or have a bad day at work.
But, these things are so minor in the grand scheme of things. I, and my family, have their health right now and at the end of the day I am so thankful for that.
Thanks for listening. I need a hot chocolate now.

The end.

Suzy:

I have had tenderness in my left achilles for some time. Never enough to stop me, but I find if I can stretch it (especially at night) I feel a lot better. This type of soft splint seems to keep the foot at 90 degrees while you sleep.

Anyway that was my thought.

Suzy, sorry about Bob.
Trevor, well said.

Doug, I have a brace somewhere that I tried for PF and it didn't work for the PF.  I made sure to keep my feet pushed against my foot board at night.  That did more that anything.

If you want my brace though you can have it(assuming I can find it).  Send me your address and I'll try to dig up the brace.

I have considered using it again for my right achilles, but I'm doing the footboard thing again instead.

I used my Timex Lap watch to record this, but I also lapped the times that I was "resting".  So the numbers are all over the place. Is there a website or easy application (or does SportTracks have it?) that I can just put down the splits, and meters (yeah, the pool is 25 meters, not yards), and have it automatically counted then I can record it correctly on the TL here?

Congrats on the first swim!  I don't have a good suggestion for counting laps or adding up the time.  To make it easier, you can just log the total time and not concern yourself with distance at this point until you get more comfortable.  If you want to know your pace, you can do regular time trials at a set distance to see how you are progressing without having to worry about counting every lap of every work out.

I am a little obsessive about knowing my distance so I count them all but there are plenty of times where I miss count and swim an extra 50 or 100 yards.  It is pretty obvious on the watch when you mis-count after you get used to your pace and expected time for a giving length.

And to quote everyone elses'

Err...obviously I didn't get my point across correctly LOL!!
My bad.
What I meant was I have the times, the splits AND the distance. It's the matter of putting it all together that seems a bit confusing to me. But obviously, if you look at my log, it's not so bad, right? I think because I have so many "laps" that it seemed a bit "off". While for a "normal" swim, it's easier with just a plan.

Most likely as I progress, at rest time, I will just write the # of laps per set down to be sure, waterproof pen or something. Not a big deal as the pool is 4 feet deep the entire length. :-)  If anyone else doesn't keep track of splits and stuff, then I must be overthinking again...*eye roll*  150 meters more, I've done the Sprint distance! lol...and I had a LOT left in my tank today...didn't want to push it.

Happychick - 2010-01-03 1:56 AM Well folks, I managed to make it through my first ever trainer ride ~ 90 mins worth!!  My hubby left for MO for two weeks tonight so this will be the only way I will get any bike time in and luckily it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be mentally.  However, physically, either I'm waaaay out of shape or its a gazillion times harder than being on the road!!  Now all I need is to find a few more triathlons to DVR!

YEAH MICHELLE!  Think about ordering a couple of Spinervals if you really want to get a good workout and pass the time. Warning: Some are easier than others! I started out with the Clydesdale one because it was doable at the time.  Love the new avatar by the way. Next time how about one with your daugher AND you?

All this talk about warm climates has got me started counting....only 21 more days until we take a short jaunt to Cabo. I love when Paul has "Meetings".  Just passed Day 8 with no foot pain so I am hoping to be run/walking by then.

Suzy

Thanks, I need to look into those as I really think it would help give me something to focus on instead of just spinning away trying not to die ~ why is it so much harder on the trainer?!
As for my avatar...I think I can manage that request next month!!  (BTW/FYI, I posted a Christmas pic in my blog and there are pics of the two of us in my albums!)
Ooooh, Cabo!  I've never been there ~ Have fun!!!!

Good news Suzy.

Michelle,  Hulu.com is a good source for trainer watching and it's free.  If you have netflix there are even more options.  Sam and I are working through Lance Armstrongs 7 TdF wins on DVD now throught nextflix 16 DVD's.

I have about 300 miles straight so far on the trainer due to the fact it has been so nasty over the last month here.  Going to be rough getting outside for the 75 minute run today.

That is an amazing site ~ I had no clue such a thing existed!! Thanks!
That's a lot of mileage on the trainer ~ I'm just praying that this will only be a necessary evil for the next few weeks while my hubby is away!

BigReub - 2010-01-03 5:53 AM Anyone here a bowler?  My wife, who is not a bowler at all, is the high school bowling coach.  Her girls are undefeated so I guess she's doing something right.

I'm getting ready to load the kids up to go watch a match in Bloomington.  I always get a little vomit in my mouth pulling into Bloomington - I hate IUFrown.

How about that ECU kicker?  0 for 3 in under 2 minutes!

It's funny...I LOVE bowling but haven't done it in years!  I was in a league as kid~even had the blue sparkly ball with my name...HMMM...I wonder where that thing is...I'll have to get a hold of my sister!

(Can you tell I'm playing catch up here?!)

I have become quite the bowler on the Wii.  I am sure it will transfer to the alley.

I've found that the better bowler you are in real life, the better you are in WII.  My hubby refuses to WII bowl with my now since it only took me a few games to go pro!

CyborgQueen - 2010-01-03 4:15 PM uh. Please don't shoot me for asking another "same-old" nutrition question.

Today, I went on a 26 mile ride (and I HTFU half way, I'm so proud of myself...seriously was ready to give up!!!). Part of the reason why the first half of the ride, I didn't eat prior to the ride (I mean seriously, duh?!). Anyways, I decided to grab a gel, (GU Vanilla Bean to be exact).  I sipped on Heed throughout the ride (not sure if this is valid).  I ate the full packet of gel. I was perfectly fine for the 2nd half of the ride. I'm not sure if I had a big energy boost from the gel or because it was pretty much downhill.

I had chocolate milk as recovery drink, and bagel for food.

About 1 hour or so later, I started to feel a wave of GI sickness. Like my stomach was really heavy. Perhaps a little amount of nausea. After visiting the Porclein King and giving donations, not through the mouth if you know what I mean, I felt a little better. Took a nice warm bath, felt a lot better.

Now, I don't usually eat gels because I've tried a couple times, and each time I felt like my mouth was so sticky and like it was way too much mucus, I just didn't like it in general.

What I want to know is, is this whole thing has to do with gel? Gel and Heed combo? Or just lack of nutrition prior to the ride, or just poor nutrition plan both during and after the ride? I took the gel one hour into the ride...I don't think it's that bad. Total ride was just under 2 hours.

Nutrition is something I seriously want to work on, but not overly crazy.  I just feel like I want to eat FOOD...NORMAL food, but I'm not sure what will give me energy bursts, and keep me long lasting.  Pepsi and Dr. Pepper will give me a HUGE amount of energy, but I suffer from sugar crash a day after, plus people will think I'm totally rude if I keep burping.

I don't think PopTarts and Fig Newtons are doing the trick, it does fill my stomach, but not giving me the energy.  Am I missing something here?  I'm just a little tired of not "knowing" what to do for nutrition for the bike. Swim - no need, Run - just water as I'm only maxing out at 5 to 6 miles.  If I go for one hour or less ride on the bike, just water. More than that, I'm clueless.

Thanks for the help!

FWIW, I've never done Heed (sounds like I'm referring to some illegal drug or something, doesn't it?!) but I CANNOT do GU for the exact same reasons as you.  However, I have NO issues with powerbar gels!  Another thing, I find that when I don't eat before using the gels, I get extremely nauseous.
I have found that on my long rides I can't do all sweets so I take some trail mix with me ~ Planters has a pre-packaged "energy mix" trail mix that I absolutely LOVE (and not just for rides!)

(I'm thinking that because I'm so far behind the power curve in here today that this discussion has already been addressed by everyone...Oh well, I'll still throw in my two cents!)

SSMinnow - 2010-01-04 11:49 AM Now, I really need some heavy duty positive vibes coming to Wisconsin.  Remember I told you about my friend Bob?  He went home on New Year's Eve after having several tests to determine what caused the aneurism.  They never found out, but said he was good to go.  I just got off the phone with his wife.  He was rushed back to the hospital with another aneurism, this one burst and he is paralyzed and cannot speak more than a word at a time none of which makes sense.  Neurosurgeon is talking to her shortly about options.  He is one of my husband's very best friends....really sad.   Reminds me once again that life is too short to waste it....

Awww Suzy, I am sooo sorry!  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!!!

trysprintolympic - 2010-01-04 1:04 PM Very sorry to hear about your friend, Suzy. And that really sucks (on a different level) about your marathon, Tobey. Hopefully both situations will end up better than they seem right now.

About weight loss, I'm already having a hard time sticking to my clean eating plan. I am a sugar junkie and my husband is too, so we have a lot of crap food in our house. He is not interested in cleaning up his diet and would think it cruel and unusual punishment if I cleared the house of his treats. Neither of us is overweight, my goal is just to firm back up to where I was before the injury.

The problem is that I can't resist temptation. I have huge sugar cravings after dinner and I had room in my calorie intake for the day for a chocolate chip cookie, so I ate one. But that turned into three! I don't want to cut it out completely (I don't know if I even could!) but I also don't know if I have the ability to stop after only a small portion. Yell

I feel your pain, Jenna!  It has taken me years (read: very gradual) to "convince" my hubby that NO sweets can be in the house for I cannot have just ONE!  I recently did the no sugar challenge (ate nothing with ANY form of sugar/fake sugar in the 1st 3 ingredients) twice and my husband wanted to kill me.  That is until he realized that he was loosing weight without even doing anything!  All I can say is to do what you can with what will power you can muster and hopefully he will eventually jump on board!

CyborgQueen - 2010-01-04 4:51 PM Yay! I went for my first swim today. Did 27 minutes worth and 3 min worth in "Walker's/Exercise" pool...which is a lot warmer than the lap pool...great way to cool down!

I remember last year when I really started to swim, I would lose track all the time of my lengths. One thing I started to do when I got into longer swims was count by 10's on the numbers of lengths. Easier to remember.
25m pools rock DJ! None of those stinkin' 25yds pool up here....

With you all the way.. "We don need no steenken 25 yd pools"

I use a very high tech  method of keeping track of my lengths. I use 2 flippers. as I reach 10 lengths I flip one over. After another 10 flip it again. ( same direction not back on top of the other one. )If I lose count all I have to do is count the number of flips to get them back together and X 10.

You have about as high tech of a method as me...I have a bag of rocks that I dump out and move from one pile to the other!

Wanted to drop in for a quick hello.......

Forgot to tell you yesterday that my bike is coming.....apparently GURU didn't have a quality issue after all.  My bike fitter told me he thought it was an excuse because bike manufacturers never adhere to dates.  I think he was right.  Bad business people....Should have a ship date by the end of the week.

Bob is having surgery sometime this morning.

I 'm off to PT later this afternoon for my run test.  Sort of a nervous  The outcome willl determine my Spring racing season including whether or not Lonestar can stay on the plan.

SSMinnow - 2010-01-05 7:41 AM Wanted to drop in for a quick hello.......

In the meantime make sure you all post a lot so I am completely behind by the time I get back online....

Glad to hear your bike is on the way.  I'll keep my fingers crossed about Bob's surgery and hope it goes well.

And I hope you will be joining us at Lonestar.  Smile

I feel pretty good today, but not 100%. Hopefully this is just my body adjusting to new levels of fitness.

I have two more runs this week. An LAT test on thursday and 15 miles in 2:15 on Sunday. I don't know how these will go if I do not feel close to 100%.

Glad to hear the bike is coming Suzy!

For what it is worth I use a swim counter on one finger. I hit it every lap and it logs the time for up to 100 laps.

Finally, I have to say a personal coach and plan is 10x better than a random on line plan!

I totally agree with that.
I am just finishing my first month up with my coach. I never had total 'structure' with my workouts until I got on with her. I posted something in my log that I am quite proud of when I compare with last year.
Last year, I was pushing hard to maintain 2:00/100m. That seemed to be where I was at. Yesterday after my main sets I did a fun 100m to see how fast I could do it. I swam it in 1:39. not that I could maintain that pace for any length of time, but last year there way no way I could do that. I have a 1000m time trial on my sched tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes.
