Pretty good training week for me.  Got 10 miles in Tuesday, good run Thursday, Saturday afternoon I rode 40 outside - had been too long, we had some wind to deal with and my legs were trashed.  Sunday I managed a short open water swim.  I know some of you saw my post in TT about my open water swim anxiety.  I used to love OW until my first panic attack last spring.  Doing that same race in April so I really need to work through this.  I did a 300ish yard loop three times.  The first time around 150 yards I stopped, the anxiety was there. I bobbed in the water for a bit but recognized my breathing was fine so WHY am I stopping?  I swam the rest.  The second time that anxious feeling pops up a little earlier but I say to myself 'what if you just keep swimming, as slow and easy as you want, just stay horizontal and keep moving'. It got better.  The third loop was good, didn't even think about stopping.  This did reinforce I need to work on my sighting though.

Great job on getting through it. The mental part of all of this can NOT be overstated.

Glad I got a short run and swim in today...it might be a while before I do it again. I went to meet with the surgeon at the dermatologists, just for a consult, ended up hobbling out with 6 stitches in the side of my foot. They are pretty confident that they removed the dangerous mole and got the clear margins, however the wound is pretty big and will need some time to heal.

The good news is that my "mole" was reviewed by 3 separate pathologists and sent to the Univ of San Fransisco before they came up with a diagnosis, at least I got my money's worth out of my high deductible! I also just got Netflix and my hubby connected our computer to the TV so I can catch up on some TV in my spare time that i am not training!

The bad news is that I have to stay off the foot and I planned a big family dinner/birthday party for my son this evening, and now I have to call in sick tomorrow to work. Luckily I prepped the dinner yesterday and baked an awesome cake last night!

Sally, I hope all is well. Stay of the foot and recover, you'll thank yourself in the long run.

bzgl40 - 2013-01-29 8:37 AM I must say, my bits are not appreciating the 4 straight days on the trainer.

Well good thing you have the highest intensity ones coming up then. The harder you push, the less pressure on your seat. Wink

That is funny because it is kinda true!

Speaking of seats, I just was reminded I need a new one. I was actually thinking to ride my tri-bike today, but when I got it out, it still had my race number from IMLP on it (late july 2012) and even has grass from the speed skating oval stuck in the Perform that I neglected to clean off the forks when we got home from Lake Placid. Needless to say I hung it right back up. Real nice. So as part of my pre-spring clean/tune up/overhaul, I gotta replace my seat. It still has the original Selle Italia SLR T1 that came spec'd on it, which I have enjoyed immensely. Although the truth is I have fortunately never suffered any saddle issues - seems like I can ride on just about anything - my bits are not too choosy. That said, the leather is worn out and split on this one and near the end of last race season it had chewed through way too many desoto shorts to even count. So, being the type to mess with things that are not broken, should I go for broke and get some some sort of fancy cut-out/gel/titanium/carbon/kevlar/dimpled/multi-winged saddle OR should I just calm down and replace it with another SLR T1?

I have 4200scy in the books from masters this morning. I had some 1-on-1 help with getting my elbow up a bit on my pull. Thanks everyone for the swim discussion late last week - been looking forward to putting it to practice today.

Rusty, I have to ask what your coach means by "Raising the floor of my pull" that you mention in your log.

Well, it seems that my entry and reach are good for both hands, but I then press straight down with a full extension before beginning my pull, and while I don't pull straight armed, it is rather deep. The visualization the coach gave me is that the depth of my hand at full extension is my "floor" and that my hand should go no deeper, which then causes a higher elbow pull. I am pretty sure I knew my pull was too deep, but before whenever I try a higher elbow pull I do it by keeping my elbow the same distance from my body which subsequently causes my hand to scull across my centerline. I knew that was not right. His instruction to "swim wider" seemed to help. I think I remember reading a while back Yanti saying something about "painting the bottom of the pool." The wider elbow feels like it allows that vertical arm position she seemed to be describing with that visualization.

At any rate, I don't know if that is right, and it did not magically make me any faster (nor any slower). But it did smoke my lats and my shoulders feel a little underworked. So at the very least it is different.

Don't know if that makes any better sense? It is always funny how what you feel like you are doing in the water is so different than what is actually going on.

Yes, that makes plenty of sense.   As to whether it's right or not, the fact that it smoked your lats and used your shoulders less sounds perfect to me!

I think it comes down to what works for you. As you have probably heard, there isn't anything magical about 20 miles or two and a half hours per se.

WHAT?  The 20 miler is not magical?  Here is what was explained to me regarding the 20 miler.  If you run your 20 miler at a nice easy pace time wise it comes out to what you should run your marathon for.  That of course implies you have done the work to have that extra speed to get the gears you need and hold it for 26.2 miles.  That not make sense?  It was years and years ago that I was told that and I know that things change all the time as they do more research

I'm not following.  Are you saying that running the 20miles easy will be the same as running your marathon pace for 26miles?  If the 20miler is easy, I would have expected your actual race pace for the marathon to be faster/harder.  Asking cause I have no idea and am curious.

Same time (or duration).  So say your training run takes you 4 hours to get your 20 miles, the thought is your marathon at 26.2 will also take 4 hours.

I guess you could use that as a ballpark estimate but there are a ton of variables. I mean, say you are doing your training run at a very conservative 2 min per mile slower than your marathon pace. 2 x 20 = 40. Hmmmm...

Anyway, I think you could get a much closer number by taking into consideration all of your training and how your long runs have felt and then being really honest with yourself.

But sure, you can use the magic 20 as a ballpark-ish. Wink

Hit 62 today and looking at 8 tomorrow night (17/-13C). And it's not really unusual here. Rain turning to snow, so we'll have a nice mess to deal with. So far there hasn't been much of anything.

Hah, right?

Question for those who do hard trainer rides (hell, hard training, in general): I've heard people talk about puking or being close to puking....but I've never been there.  My legs give out way before I get to that point.  Is it only after your muscles are strong enough that you get to that "I went so hard I puked" point?

Hoping to wake up to fresh legs tomorrow

I love my Adamo...but if you've got something that works and that you like - go with it!

Here's my saddle evolution

Profile Design Tri Stryke - 1 season, hated it

Arione Tri - several seasons liked it, but went looking for something new....

Selle Italia - hated it

Adamo road - hated it

Cobb  - hated it

Back to Arione - tolerated it

Ended up on:  Planet X $29 arione knockoff on both road and tri.

That's a lot of money on saddles to end up at a <$30 model (got full use, resold and/or returned so all is not lost). Go figure.

I had plans to run this afternoon but I think instead I will nap.  2 days of poor sleep with probably overdoing it yesterday has exhausted me.  I even lost a table I created. Surprised  Why is it we feel so guilty taking time off even if we know it is for the best?  Especially since we do this for enjoyment?  My guess is many of us really are addicted to this on some level

When I swam, I can remember being on the verge of puking many times - I don't think I ever actually did though.  Since I started tris, I can only think of one 5k where I felt like I was going to hurl.  Oh and during my IM the thought of drinking that Perform stuff made me want to puke during the marathon.

I can't do four days straight...and I've got a saddle and shorts that I love. I just don't think we were meant for that kind of punishment!

Sally - glad to hear they cleared the margins...hope you heal up quickly.

Keri - great job getting back out there on the swim. I do think it is a matter of desensitizing yourself. You are a good swimmer, you can do this.

And I just found out I'm .75 miles from breaking 100 this month. Two more days (and 9 miles on the plan) to make it!

Awesome job on the mileage Jennifer!

Four days straight would kill me and my ahem marital relations! I'm trying to convince my bits getting back on the trainer after Saturday's ride is the right thing to do since I have another long ride this weekend.

bzgl40 - 2013-01-29 5:43 PM I had plans to run this afternoon but I think instead I will nap.

You know it's time for a nap when you start accidentally dropping tables...

Picnic or Data?
