Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry!

Sadly, after cleaning house most of the day, not getting a nap to make up for the 2 hours of sleep last night and the in-laws arriving at 5pm, I've scrapped tonight's workout I'm disappointed to miss my weekly goals, but I also know my body was far from ready to expend the energy. Sooo...I will put in work tomorrow to make myself feel better.

Now to read what else is going on in Manateeville...

jbwills - 2013-01-18 2:31 PM I am enjoying a 4 day weekend. I went grocery shopping today to make chilli and apple cinnamon muffins. I am looking at a ride tonight and maybe a run today. Probably a run tomorrow with some cross country skiing. Sunday a run outdoors at it will be warm. Monday I will probably also hit some cross country skiing. Otherwise I am relaxing and doing some cooking.

Wow...that sounds like a really nice weekend! Enjoy yourself (bah! like I need to say that) Will we have food pics anytime soon again?

OK fishie teachers: Is two shorter sessions in the pool going to do me as much good as one longer one?  In addition to my two Masters per week I mean.  So two days per week, about ~2500m each time already happening.  Is it better to do another swim that length, or two shorter swims to equal the same yardage?

How was the chili?  I am looking for some good vegetarian recipes.   Please post (if it was good).  Looks yummy!!

The chili is excellent. It is vegetarian, the "meat" look is bulgur wheat.

This is the recipe:

2 T cocunut/olive oil
2 cloves garlic
1 cup finely chopped onion
8-10 medium mushrooms finely chopped
1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped red pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped carrots
1 jalapeno pepper
1 cup frozen corn kernels
1 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp ground coriander
2 T chili powder
2 T sea salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 28 oz can diced tomatoes
1 15 oz cam tomato puree
1 15 oz can kidney beans drained
1 15 oz can black beans drained
1 15oz can red beans drained
2 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup bulgur wheat
hot sauce/cayenne pepper (optional)
1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro, for garnish

Add oil to large pot. Saute veggies and spices in the oil over medium-low heat for 10min to until tender. Add a few tablespoons of water if the veggies begin to stick to pot. Add the remaining ingredients, except cilantro, and simmer over medium-low heat for , covered, for 30 minutes. Stir and simmer for an additional 20-30 minutes until veggies are cooked through. Season with salt and, if more spices is desired, hot sauce, cayenne pepper to taster. Serve sprinkled with cilantro.

I modified this a little to use dried beans as I am making a larger container to make lunches for a week for myself. I also adjusted some of the spices to my taste. I let several friends taste the first batch and they did not think it was vegan/vegetarian. I also like my soups to be closer to solids than soup so I thickened mine up with extra bulgur wheat.

4agoodlife - 2013-01-18 10:57 PM Two hour's sleep (DH coughed all night and I feel bad that he is sick, but ugh!!!) and my inlaws get here for their four week visit today...which means I need to clean up house. So I'm thinking happy thoughts and making LOTS of coffee. And going to use the computer to read what's going on because my eyes are too tired to see my phone.

Oh, wow. I mean, on the scale of quality problems--that actually really is awful!

I can't deal with sleeping snorers and coughers--I snuff them out. And in-laws?!?! AAAAAAAARGH ... actually, I've always had fantastic SO parents (except for the Naked Family), but four weeks. Yikes. You need a {MELON PRESS} and that coffee, pronto.

PLEASE!?!?!?!

haha! I almost got violent with him around 2am. When my son came in about 3:30 and sandwiched me between them, I lasted 45min. Went to his bed until DH woke me up to say goodbye. Sigh.

My in-laws are pretty easy...it becomes more a personal space issue than personality.

Naked Family??? I've never known anyone with one of those. Interesting.

So, err ... I may have kept one of my better students around (little did we know "around" would be two years!) ... he had a Naked Family. They'd just wander around naked and expected me to do the same. Hell to the no. His mom was a beautician (actually taught it at a community college as well) and would wax the boys (hubby and two sons). She offered to wax me, too. I let her do my eyebrows.

Yeah. Not walking around naked with a 40-year-old dad, my 19-year-old boyfriend and his 16-year-old brother around. NO. WAY. His dad was inappropriate anyway. Not awful or threatening inappropriate ... just totally tasteless. I wound up, some time later, matching his dad on a dating site. SHUDDER ...

Going backwards through the day...typical me. Isn't this way of living typically called a newdist (yes, I do know how to spell it. Do they flag that word?) colony? It is becoming more and more obvious that I have lived a boring life, as I have never gotten shudders from matching anyone's dad.

Oh my goodness we have a 3 day weekend. MLK only got added to our holiday list last year.

I'm going snowboarding on Sunday and I think cross country skiing on Monday. I'm going to be all adult-like and wear my helmet since it might be icy. That's a first!

Ohhh and we are doing a brewery tour tomorrow.

Anyone doing anything fun this weekend?

I have a snow day today!  It's almost melted.  Gotta love the South.

Tomorrow, E and I are spending the day without daddy (he gets a day off to play board games). We are going to walk around a shopping area: packet pickup for me, shopping for her.  Should be fun.

Sunday is my race.  We are getting a sitter in the afternoon to go shooting for hubby's birthday gift.

Monday, E is going to daycare. I am going to a movie!

You've got it nailed! Noooo...not your toenail. Figured out race time, mommy/kid time, mommy/daddy time AND mommy alone time. That's talent

Soooo (hard to believe, I know), I have a couple of tri-related questions.

When I started this tri "experiment" in Oct, I didn't want to spend money on anything new....you know, just in case. I've been wearing DH's old tri shorts (not uncomfortable) but they're becoming a bit threadbare, and an embarrassing moment could be just around the corner. Followed some of the men's vs women's conversation a few days ago. I'm not against getting another pair of men's shorts (I'm long from hip to knee), but will I give up any padding comfort?

I don't have a road bike yet...about three weeks out. Also followed the saddle conversation, and I know fit/comfort can make or break T.I.T.S. Did any of you "try out" saddles at LBS before buying? Is that something they do, or do I have to go in knowing what I want?

Sorry, I'm kind of a leech on here...sucking up knowledge. I'll add insights when I have more experience. For now I will be a great cheerleader

That is exactly who you are supposed to be, and we love a Manatee leech.

I really don't think there is a difference generally between men's and women's tri short padding. I primarily wear men's shorts as I said before. If you like the level of padding in your old shorts, you'll want to pick a brand/style that has a similar level of padding, that's all.

Good LBSs have loaner saddles that you can try out for a week or two. Also, some saddle manufacturers have a very generous return policy.

Have you had a bike fitting yet?

Well, I will do my best to be a good leech.Year-old Pearl izumis...how much should I trust their padding level vs how new shorts feel?Good to know on trying saddles! No bike fit yet. Was going to test a few but with two young kids in tow....didn't happen. Soon! Very soon!

Without passing on her entire post, my teammate did this big write-up on getting your ferritin checked. I can go ahead and pass on what she said, but before I do that Is this something that truly is necessary?

I pretty much never go to the doctor.

No.

Also, serum ferritin isn't, by itself, that useful a number.

I assume you know your diet's got good iron happening? (preferably not together with calcium or caffeine) Menstruation is regular and hasn't changed?

Well, here is part of her post:

So basically, check your goddamn ferritin, especially if you're:

  • Female

  • Vegetarian

  • Female and vegetarian (gl;hf)

I would recommend getting it checked once before every season or, if you don't race seasonally, right before you begin training for any given big goal race. Even if you're male and eat lots of delicious beef, I think it's important to get it checked out once in a while. Even if you take iron supplements, get it checked out.

I am only 50% of those things and love my red meat sooo I'm probably fine. I was anemic a looonnng time ago and have no idea if that is relevant information.  My periods are kind of all over the board these days. In fact I just started and am mother-effing exhausted so I think it's setting me up to actually believe anything I read on the internets.

I do know about issues of long-distance runners (particularly female) and iron deficiency, but you're probably not going to keel over and die tomorrow even if you were. Fortunately, it's easily reversible.

If you started having low energy and not being able to bust out workouts that normally are easy, yes, it's a major red flag and probably the first thing to look at (for a female distance runner) along with hemoglobin levels.

If you eat red meat a couple times a week (as I said preferably without caffeine and calcium, and preferably with a Vit C source), and you otherwise also eat iron-rich foods, you're fine. Until you're not. Then worry about it.

P.S. Have your periods always been all over the map or just lately?

Uhhh, well I can't say that in the past I tracked it ALL that carefully (for obvious reasons Wink) but in the last year or so I felt it was becoming really inconsistent so I actually did start tracking it and yes, indeed it has become a little random. Def. not on a consistent cycle. Like I said, I can't absolutely confirm this is true because I wasn't tracking it.

Do you recall what kind of anemia you had before / cause?

Are you seeeeerrrrrrious??? Of course I don't! But it happened after I had mono in college.

Okay, so ... given that you're not cycling consistently and you feel like it's been more inconsistent (whether or not you have hard numbers), and that you're wiped out at the beginning of your cycle (and it's not just generally feeling awful because it's that time of the month, but really more fatigued than usual and affecting your runs), yeah, I think it would be worth it to have some testing done (helps to have a baseline anyway), especially if it would be covered by insurance and not too much of a hassle. If it's something you'd have to fork hundreds of bucks out of pocket for, nope.

There's a few things you could test for if it's anemia / iron deficiency you're concerned about, but honestly, serum iron and serum ferritin, and TIBC (total iron binding c-something, count maybe?) will pretty much tell the story and even out of pocket that shouldn't run more than $50 or so (unless a clinic starts tacking on nurse's fees and doctor's fees and stuff, argh!) Hemoglobin won't be affected until you're really SOL ... er s-out-of-iron so not that important but it's also cheap and fast.

Ok, I'm sorry to go back to this but is it not common to feel completely wiped a couple days leading up to your period (and maybe a couple days in?)

I mean, trust me I know what being tired is (see my running logs.) But when I say wiped, I mean WIPED.

I can't do all the doc and bloodwork talk...gives me cold sweats...but I can agree with this. Drag my pattooty to the gym with tears in my eyes.

I guess you all have stuff going on this Saturday, it has been like 12 hours of no posts!

Question, how do you all figure out your splits on the fly?  I have my iphone with the app mapmyride but that only give me my average pace over my entire run.  It would be nice to know what my pace is over an exact mile.

What garmin watch do you have?

Does RunKeeper give it to you audibly?  I think it would be hard to visually check my upper arm all the time.

Thanks for the quick responses!

I had to get a bunch o' stuff done this morning because there is a triple-header of hockey on today Tongue out.

I have a garmin too for my splits, but to be honest, I rarely look at it during my run anymore.  Being a part of the Manatees has taught me to run by feel rather than by my watch.  Don't get me wrong, I check it all out when I get home, cause I am a geek, but pretty much ignore it while I am out there.  I have a FR305

grooooaaaaaan

never believe your sister when she says, "oh, it's just a little good-bye barbecue ... "

Man, it was like the 12 Days of Christmas ... most of the items being food (repeat down the song) and there were definitely ladies dancing and piglets a' leaping, too.

She'd BBQ'ed twice as much food as needed for the amount of people expected, which she figured would make it just perfect including me and having a few nice leftovers for me to take home, too.

o groan

I did, however, take a half-hour aquajogging break in the rain. After which, of course, I ate some more.

Also, any party that my sister and I are at together ... well ... anyway. None of it can be put into print on a family forum.

o groan

When I was using MapMyRun I set it up to give me audible average mile splits. It was not exact, but it was close enough for me to know how I was doing and if I needed to speed up. If I remember correctly it was under options.

I have sent switched to a Garmin 310XT. I get a vibration on each mile and displays my individual mile time.

You can set runkeeper to tell you your splits based on time or distance. For instance I have mine set up to give me my distance at 15 minute intervals. You can set it to give average pace or speed, current pace or speed or current split pace or speed. ETA: the cues are verbal

Yeah I tend to run by feeling as most of my audible stuff from my phone gets lost while I'm rocking out to my tunes :D  The problem is I wear myself out wayyy to fast.  I just kind of go and most of the time have to take a little walk about 3/4 of the way though.  I figure if I can set a good split for a distance it will be easier to maintain a steady pace.

Today is Hockey Day in Minnesota!!! Plus the Wild game is on tonight, so psyched!

I will be running today and maybe resort to the treadmill for the next few days as windchills are expected to be around -40 to -50 for the next few days.  Surprised   When is this streaking starting?

I guess you all have stuff going on this Saturday, it has been like 12 hours of no posts!

Question, how do you all figure out your splits on the fly?  I have my iphone with the app mapmyride but that only give me my average pace over my entire run.  It would be nice to know what my pace is over an exact mile.

That used to be an option on the MapMyRide too but now it is under "Pro" options only which is a monthly subscription fee... no thanks.
