bzgl40 - 2013-01-28 9:37 AM I must say, my bits are not appreciating the 4 straight days on the trainer.

I can't do four days straight...and I've got a saddle and shorts that I love. I just don't think we were meant for that kind of punishment!

Sally - glad to hear they cleared the margins...hope you heal up quickly.

Keri - great job getting back out there on the swim. I do think it is a matter of desensitizing yourself. You are a good swimmer, you can do this.

And I just found out I'm .75 miles from breaking 100 this month. Two more days (and 9 miles on the plan) to make it!

Awesome job on the mileage Jennifer!

Four days straight would kill me and my ahem marital relations! I'm trying to convince my bits getting back on the trainer after Saturday's ride is the right thing to do since I have another long ride this weekend.

40 miler bike ride today and my bits.. feel, erm.. pretty good.

Question for those who do hard trainer rides (hell, hard training, in general): I've heard people talk about puking or being close to puking....but I've never been there.  My legs give out way before I get to that point.  Is it only after your muscles are strong enough that you get to that "I went so hard I puked" point?

Hoping to wake up to fresh legs tomorrow

Well, you're recovering from surgery? Also, it depends on the type of workout. The higher the intensity, the more likely it is to be a gut buster. So this would be the really short intervals, as opposed to say 2 x 20' or longer. For me, it's been very, very rare that I'll actually feel like throwing up. More that I just burn like crazy inside. The longer ones can still burn quite considerably, but due to the lesser intensity they likely won't quite have that same feeling.

I must say, my bits are not appreciating the 4 straight days on the trainer.

My bits seem to be okay, but my legs are starting to feel pretty trashed!  I know I can knock out Stage 5, but Stage 6 looks like it could be ugly.  I may consider doing Stage 5 tomorrrow morning and then Stage 6 Thursday after work, just to give my legs a tiny bit extra recovery time!

I'm not doing the Tour, but am very familiar with the videos. Day 6 will be a long burn with the 30 & 35 min at effort and drain some energy out of you. The next 3 days will be short intervals, but very high intensity. Very tough to do when tired. Warm up & cool down well for all of these. Incorporating some faster spinning on light resistance has helped me before. Also make sure to rest well. Day 8 is nuts.

ETA: Day 6 is kind of like things I do more regularly, but backed down a bit on effort.

Are you trying to scare me?

Hehe. Had you not looked that far ahead? I was a little puzzled by which ones everyone seemed to be looking forward to pointing out.

I'm a regular fountain of puke, especially lately.  I've puked due to effort alone, both in training and in racing -- this has mostly been after hard intervals (training) or a 5K race.  Last summer I was diagnosed with a variety of intestinal problems which I never quite totally figured out before IMWI (and am still working on it), the result being that I threw up multiple times.  Fortunately, it doesn't really bother me.

All of the above is odd, to me, because prior to doing endurance training, I had an iron stomach.  I've eaten fermented (aka rotten) fish in Korea, toasted bugs in Africa, the whole panoply of animal parts prepared under very questionable hygienic standards, and other, less delicious but equally potentially puke-inducing, things, with nary a problem.  I've always ignored 'don't drink the water', etc., etc., and never (until recently) had a problem.  All of which is to say:  stuff happens (or not).

As to your specific question, I suppose it is going to be different for different people, but when I run hard, it is the legs that give out.  In other words, in these situations (intervals, 5K races) I reach the limits of the power that my legs can produce before I reach the limits of how much oxygen I can breathe and deliver to the muscles.  (That's a bit of a false dichotomy, but perhaps you get the idea.)

bzgl40 - 2013-01-29 5:43 PM I had plans to run this afternoon but I think instead I will nap.  2 days of poor sleep with probably overdoing it yesterday has exhausted me.  I even lost a table I created. Surprised  Why is it we feel so guilty taking time off even if we know it is for the best?  Especially since we do this for enjoyment?  My guess is many of us really are addicted to this on some level

You know it's time for a nap when you start accidentally dropping tables...

Picnic or Data?

Yes. I kept picturing my kitchen table, and trying to imagine . . . Oh, never mind. I need sleep.

I am a puker. I had to take a "water" break at spin class Monday to relieve myself. I almost always feel better after. Swimming gets me the most often. But I have a weak stomach anyway, so puking is a pretty common thing for me.

Only once and it was during a race; my second season, drank too much on the run course because it was hot and they were giving out 600mL ice cold bottles of water.

I was chasing a guy in the last km and was slowly reeling him in; I knew I was going to catch him by the finish but was starting to experience tunnel vision and with 200m to go I knew something was wrong. 100m to go and I had to stop and threw up all over the side of the run course. Figured I was good, jogged a couple of more steps, threw up again. Walked a few steps, felt okay, jogged toward the finish, thought all was good and then threw up again on the finish line.

Oddly, nobody was in a hurry to retrieve my chip...

Makes me think of that quote - you know you've gone out too hard if you puke before the finish line, too easy if you puke after finishing and JUST RIGHT if you puke on the finish line.

I (thankfully) have never puked because of a workout. I have sometimes wished I could, but have never had the matter pass. I'm with the other folks - other parts of me give out before my stomach. Mostly my brain.

Kim - you asked why we find it hard to take a (deserved) day off....for me it's because achieving this level of fitness was so difficult - it took years. I'm afraid that if I take a day off, I'll lose all the fitness I worked so hard to gain (I know - a day or two won't kill me), and I'll lose the drive to continue working hard. It's kind of like a diet. You tell yourself that you aren't going to eat any sugar for the next month. A week into it, you accidentally put a tsp of sugar in your coffee in the morning (because honestly, you haven't HAD your coffee yet and you are still a little addled). Then at lunch, someone offers you a bite of a cookie. It becomes much easier to take that bite of cookie because you have already violated the sugar moratorium. I feel that way about working out. If I let one of my planned workouts go in a week, it becomes much easier to drop another because the week is "already not to the plan." It's horrible 'All or nothing' thinking that gets you nowhere (I know in my heart, but I struggle with convincing my brain). At least that's how it works for me.

I'm still impressed you are doing Sufferlandia + running 100+ miles in January.

I've come here to whine...LOL...my foot hurts sooo bad. I can't put weight on my foot at all because the whole area is so sore and swollen, the stitches are hurting like heck. I woke up this am without too much pain but as soon as I try to walk, the stitches pull. Ouch! OK, probably TMI but I wasn't expecting this at all. The good thing about having the surgery unexpectedly on Monday was that i didn't have time to dwell on it, however it wasn't the best idea because I had not planned on being off my feet for days. I took the day off work yesterday but have to go back today, not sure how I am going to manage....I work with Special needs kids and it's very hard on everyone when I'm out...the kids especially don't like change, so I'm going in for 4 hours.

OK, I'm done complaining! Back to S/B/R

Agreed....sometimes it feels good to vent a little!  Give it another day or two -- I imagine you'll hit a turning point and will feel WAY better.  It's funny how that happens, but it seems to work that way.

Big cackle out loud at that one. Way to go, Jarrod Shoemaker

I've done some pretty good puking the last couple years but only because I was training or racing sick. Clever!!! I actually "pulled over" to the side in the Bali Tri swim leg to puke, but it being an ocean it probably didn't make much difference. Nobody complained about puke being in the water, anyway.

Other than that, only back in the competitive swimming days, but it'd happen a few times a week (maybe 1 out of every 4 or 5 workouts). True story: we were doing some kind of killer set, and the coach walked over to our lane, leaned over, and whispered, "Slackers. This is the only lane where nobody's puked or cried yet." The four guys burst into tears and the two girls puked. Shoulda seen the look on the coach's face. Priceless. I just saw him at my niece's wedding this Christmas and over 20 years later, both of us still remember this

Stage 5 of ToS felt surprisingly good.  I did it at 97% and up until the last interval, I was thinking that I should have just left it at 100%.  The last interval was brutal, but I gutted it out and was pretty happy with my effort.

Also, per Ben's suggestion, I actually added a warm-up to this morning's ride, with a few short boosts in power and cadence.  I think it really helped me throughout the ride....either that, or it's a placebo effect that I'm quite okay with

Tomorrow looks ugly....Saturday looks downright brutal!  But, in a sick way, I'm actually looking forward to it.

Yikes.  Running the treadmill after work today myself

Have my first race of 2013 Sunday, Redondo Beach 10K.  Goal for a while has been sub 50, best is 52 and change last year.  I am 20# lighter than last year and running faster than ever, still seems daunting.  Sub goal would be to average in the 7:XXs.  The 5K of this race was actually my first race ever in 2005 and averaged 9:37s.  Sometimes feel as if I am a slow learner, LOL.

Course is mostly flat, some rolling, with one short steep hill about 1.2 miles out, then downhill to the finish.  Have a pacing plan to get it done but not sure I can do it.
