Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Plainsman AU - 2010-01-05 4:56 PM jrj0924 - 2010-01-05 3:10 PM So I went to the physical therapist today and she couldn't pinpoint one particular thing that was causing the IT/knee pain. She said it looked to be a bunch of little things regarding the way I run and lots of tightness and weak muscles. So I am going twice a week (cha-ching!) for the month and then hopefully I will be able to taper a bit. I have stretches and exercises to do, I assume I will get additional ones each visit. I asked about running (stating I signed up for a marathon in March) and she asked whether I could do any other activities, and I begrudgingly said biking and swimming and she suggested I stick with those two to allow the injury to calm down a bit. I wasn't surpised by this and I am strangely not that upset about it as I figured in the back of my head I was only making things worse by running. So I think the marathon is out (which is ok, I can defer until next year) but if I take January off I think I should be a-ok for my HIM at White Lake the first of May. What kinds of stretching and exercises are you doing? My ITB is hopefully better in that i have done a couple of 3 to 4 milers this week with no probs, but still wondering how it will respond to distance. I am trying to stretch every chance i get. I am doing the clamshell, hip flexor stretches and the one where you stand and cross your legs and bend away from your bad leg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ7xSCJWa3I) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What does everyone think of this bike? http://tulsa.craigslist.org/bik/1538989613.html Do I need to be patient and keep looking? I'm such a Type A personality. I need everything right, and I need it now! lol! Also, I am concerned about my eating. As I increase my training, my appetite is just......out of this world. We went out to eat last night - I ordered the soft tacos (on a very small steamed corn tortilla with lean pulled pork, onions, cilantro). They are not big. I ate three, but wanted 15. I walk around very, very hungry. I eat a piece of fruit every two hours, Clif bars, a tablespoon of peanut butter, etc. for snacks throughout the day, but by dinner I'm starving! |

I feel your pain on needing everything right now... I meant to ask you about the bike because I saw your post in the classifieds. Some questions to ask yourself about a bike purchase. 1. What kind of riding will you do. -If you can only have one bike, will you be doing group rides? If so a tri-bike won't be welcome usually -If you aren't going on group rides are you serious about triathlons because for most people a Tri-bike is useless if you aren't doing tri's -What kind of riding do you have available to you? Personally I never ride my tri-bike unless I am going to a fairly open area where I can spend most of my time in the aerobars. It sucks to ride on the pursit bars for any length of time and if riding anywhere near traffic you need to have a close reach to brakes which means you are back in the pursuit bars. -If you want to do tri's, have the right kind of area for you to ride, and don't do group rides then a tri bike is for you. If you want to do stuff other than tri's or have some of the other issues, then maybe a road bike with clip on aerobars is right for you. 2. Does the bike fit you. Not sure how tall you are but a 54 is what I ride 5'8, 30" inseam and even then 54 doesn't mean much these days, really helps to try it out first if possible. 3. What is your budget, that can go a long way to narrowing down which is the right bike for you. The best answer is to have both a road bike and tri-bike best of both worlds, but that costs $$ |

I'm such a Type A personality. I need everything right, and I need it now! lol! Be patient. :-D If you *really* want a road bike now, I highly recommend you to go to your LBS, and get yourself measured and see what exact geometry (leg angles, arm angles, back angles are all important) will fit you. When I went bike shopping I went to several places, and went to one LBS that measured everything, and the Jamis was a perfect fit. I have tried the Specialized Roubaix, but their 48cm was actually too tall and I really didn't like having the top tube hitting my hoo-has, it just made it generally very uncomfortable. I didn't want to go 44cm because I would have 650c wheels, which I don't want. Geometry is MORE important than anything else. You may like the bike, but it may not fit. IF you have gotten sized up for the proper geometry, and the bike is the proper size, and you got the money, go for it. :-) You can change certain things on the bike, but you cannot change the geometry. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Warning....I need to vent....I know this is not a huge issue compared to some others posted recently so sorry in advance to all that are willing to listen. So, I wake up this morning at my usual 4:30 am to get to my workout in with a horrible chest cold. I can "hear" myself breath within my own head. So, no swim for me this morning. I have kind of been on a roll with my training and am just frustrated and missing my workout endorphins today! So my question for the MG is: Do I try to put in a 3-4 mile slowly paced base run tonight to try to knock this cold out of my lungs (HTFU) or do I just lay low for a couple of days until I feel like I can breath again? Any input is appreciated.... Dino |

If it's below the neckline (ie. in your chest) then stay away until you're better. Don't want to push it to pneumonia! Hope you get better soon. ![]() |

Well now if you want someone to write a book on eating, basic nutrition stuff, etc. that would be me. I have whined, obsessed, stressed, freaked out, you name it over the years and researched, researched, researched. One thing I can proudly say is that I have never fallen pray to yo-yo dieting. Ok now about you! The bottom line - I feel your pain. I am an easy keeper so weight does not come off easily. And when you increase workouts, you increase your need/desire for more food. It's a vicious circle. So... Step 1 - track the food calories you eat (A) and the exercise calories you burn (B). Step 2 - figure out your resting metabolic rate (C) - you can google for calculators and try a couple to get a good est. Step 3 - Subtract: A-B = X then see if X is bigger or smaller than C. Ex. 2000 (calories eaten) - 800 (bike/run calories) = 1200 net for the day. My RMR is around 1400 cal. so I would have -200 cal. for the day. 3500 cal = 1 lb. of body weight. I don't really try to add up enough negative days to get to 3500 for each pound I want to lose but I have found if I try really hard to keep the day and/or week calorie totals at "0" then I lose weight. So if I eat an extra 5600 calories above my RMR then I make sure I exercise enough to cancel out that extra food. It's been my most succesful approach yet. I'm pretty happy w/ my results and usually only get hungry before bed. I eat 5-7 times a day. I try to keep my main meals b/t 450-600 and snacks 100-250. My MIL told me when I was pregnant w/ my first kid that now I could anything I wanted. TG I knew that wasn't true. It's the same with training. You have to super careful about the extra food. Also make sure you fuel up before/during and right after workouts. That's where most of the extra calories should come from. Yoyu don't want to teach your body to eat larger meals b/c it will be even harder to scale back during recovery or injury periods. I hope that all helps and makes sense. Ok now I'm off to go eat something! :-) Edited by sdalessio 2010-01-06 12:33 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I understand your quandry. How bad do you feel? are we talking TM our outside? I usually push myself and do the run or bike, but I believe it does take a bit of a toll on your immune system and could make the cold hang around longer. By the way I am not a fan of HTFU very often....especially when it comes to potential injury or illness. I reserve that for people who complain about workouts for no good reason! badgerintx - 2010-01-06 12:01 PM Warning....I need to vent....I know this is not a huge issue compared to some others posted recently so sorry in advance to all that are willing to listen. I did a strength workout indoors at lunch and will try the trainer tonight. It's too cold here for me to try and run w/ my head/body like this. I'm hoping tomorrow will be better. Listen to your body and go w/ your gut. Nobody here is a wimp. Rest if you need it. |
