MDHillSlug - 2008-10-12 10:20 PM I did a long bike ride today. It was kinda sucky, not one I enjoyed. I'm gonna do a nice easy run tomorrow morning. I suppose I should do a taper for my race on Saturday.

What race are you doing Saturday?

I'm doing a duathlon: 2 mile run, 10 mile bike, 5k run. So far there are only 6 women registered for my AG, so just maybe I can reach the podium!

I did 4 slow miles this morning. My legs are tired from yesterday.

I've mastered the art of posting while riding on the trainer, haven't gotten it figured out running yet !

I've been on some very chatty teams. It can be overwhelming and hard to keep up with. On the other extreme, my team last month only did 4 pages through the whole month.

I got 5 in today.  I had only planned on 3, but what the heck.  I would normally have ridden 20 miles but it gets dark too early to ride anymore during the week.  Is it ok to replace bike time with run time?

Just 2.25 today as a brick off the bike.  One hour on the bike then a short run.

Go ZzzzzzZombies!!!

It's ok as long as you aren't adding miles too fast that you may get injured.  No more than 10% +/- per week of increased run miles or you run the risk of getting hurt.  The general rule of thumb is that riding will help your run fitness, but it doesn't work in reverse, but not everyone buys that theory.  But my personal experience is that it is generally true for me.

So today I honestly had good intentions to brick a bike/run.   HOWEVER, after a single lap at a MTB trail that I've ridden before, I was whipped!  This was the hardest MTB ride that I've had in a long time!

After 1 lap on the trail I took my bike back to the staging area and called it a day! Sorry...  I'll catch up my miles quickly.

Hi Team - just a quick update to let you know the challenge for next month (November) has already been posted here:

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=136294&posts=1&start=1

Its all about hitting your workouts for the month and being run by the lovely Travis - all you need to do is commit to 20 workouts in the month, each a minimum of 30 minutes in duration.

What those workouts are - well thats up to you!!!

Another 4.52 for me last night.  That puts me at 83% already.  I think I way under challenged myself.  My goal was 40 for the month and by Sunday I'll be up to 45 and still have 2 weeks to go.  Any reason to up my goal (does it help the team) or leave it where it is cause 100% is 100%?

Morning Zombies,

I got out and did another easy 4 miles this morning. This will be my last run before the race on Saturday. I'm not doing a proper taper so I hope I'm sufficiently rested for the race. I'll let you know how it goes.

100% is 100%, but upping your goal will keep you challenged. Might as well go for it.

Hey Zombies,

Just got in 3.42 mi.  Chins are starting to get a little sore, does this mean I need to get new shoes?  I've lengthend my warm up and warm down and that has helped along with stretching.  How long do shoes tend to last?  I think I have about 350 miles on them.

Keep up the running, GO ZOMBIES!!

There's been no official word, but the team standings after week two appear to be:

Dark Arts 42.59
Clowns 42.58
Monsters 39.93
Horsemen 38.46
Warewolves 37.35
Zombies 36.94
Vampires 36.34
Ghosts & Ghouls 35.14

There's lots of time for us to make up ground! Keep up the running, but also make sure you log your miles on the spreadsheet. If it's not in your logs AND on the spredsheets then it's like it didn't happen.

Some challenges will count up to 110% if there is a tie. But other than that 100 is 100.

I did 1 mile last night after my bike and have 2 on the schedule for tonight. I am right on track to exceed a little bit on my goal with room to add more if needed.

Come on Zzzzombies...

7 for me today! Mile repeats, ouch!

As far as the question about shoes wearing out, I use 350 as a rule of thumb, but a lot of it depends on your stride, the brand of shoe, and a few other variables.  I have had some I dumped before 300 and others I was comfortable in up over 400.  Knock on wood, I have never had shin splints, but typically when a shoe is wore out it is because the cushioning is gone and for me it shows more in the ankle and knee joints, but I guess it is possible that it could show up in the shins.

Thanks for the info, maybe a shopping trip is on for this weekend.  Also can't believe I wrote "chins" instead of shins.  Too funny.Laughing

Here is a link to a thread on the GA Forums about shoes.  I started it wanting to know if you could stock up on shoes that were no longer going to be made, but it ended up being more about how long shoes last.

I'd say if your "chins" (ha, ha) are hurting it's definitely time to retire the pair you're wearing.  Do you keep track of the miles you put on them under your equipment tracker?
