Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JoshR - 2009-05-28 6:19 PM I rode the bike course saturday. Right out of the swim there is a nice downhill which leads to a very easy but long climb. Then there is another gradual downhill until you turn onto pleasant valley road which has a decent climb about a mile or so down. It's nothing to kill you but you will probably be in your granny gear. After that is some rollers that aren't too hard and then there is the Birds of Prey hill which I haven't biked due to it being a private road, but from what I've been told it will be another granny gear hill and it's not too long. Then there are some big rollers coming back down pleasant valley but if you pick up speed on the downhills the climbs are relatively easy. One final small gradual uphill down gowen road and then Federal Way is all gradual downhill for the last few miles into T2. SO overall there is a decent amount of hills but most of it isn't bad at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The run is flat. As in the only hills are crossing the bridges and running under the tunnels on the path. The entire path is paved with a decent amount of it new pavement and you can run in the grass on the side of the path for probably half of the way if you want. Also this will be my first HIM. Edit: The wind could negate everything I said and make the entire bike course suck hard. I'd put it at a 50/50 shot either way. When I rode it on saturday there was very little wind. Come on Josh. Quite lying to the people! This is Idaho. There is a 94.3% chance that winds will be hard, and you'll get a headwind in every direction you turn ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() E=H2O - 2009-05-15 6:33 PM Personally I hate races with 2 transitions locations. I guess if you want to swim in a lake and finish in town with spectators there isn't much of a choice. And if the attraction is to make it an event for the spectators (and athletes who like them at the finish) then you have to start the slow folks first so people finish closer together. But I can assure you that there are some (many?) of us 50+ men & 40+ woman that will finish ahead of some of the later starting youngsters. As far as not swimming before the races . . . just plain dumb. I'm sure someone is concerned with the liability issue. But if that isthe case people should be able to just show up and swim the day before like any member of the public. That is of course assuming the lake is open to the public for swimming. I know this was posted a few weeks ago but, it is no swimming the day of the race, not the days prior to which is not clear in the instructions. I see the point to not letting people into the water prior to their wave start to. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ugh did a mean 6 hour ride today 6300 feet of climbing with 2x 10 mile sustained 5-6 percent grade, 20 +/- mph winds and among other things a hailstorm making the decent kind of interesting on the wet road. A 17 mile ish run tomorrow and it is taper land thankfully. Hopefully Boise doesn't get too much above 85 F for the race. I ordered a neopreme hood for the swim and for next years Idaho IM (maybe). Too bad we don't have like a BT banner or something we could set up a meet/greet spot for folks to hang out at after the race. We are going to need a local to call a meeting place for the night before and have folks just make it if they can. Starting to get psyched up for this, should be lots of fun. |

In re the swim, no swim before race day or even before your wave I don't understand. And how am I supposed to pee in my wetsuit if I can do a warmup swim? :-) Edited by travljini 2009-05-31 4:31 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I swam in Lucky Peak pond today, which is just below the dam. The water comes out of the bottom of the lake so it is always pretty cold. With my wet suit on and a regular swim cap I was very comfortable. You should be able to swim there the day before or even in the morning. It is a state park so you have to pay $4 to park inside. I wonder if the Athlete Guide/Rules mean no swimming in the lake the day of the race but the day before is OK. It seems odd that they would have the authority to keep us out the day before. Another place to swim the day before is Spring Shores Marina which is just over the mountain up Hwy 21, cross the bridge and turn right. Or you could always do Clock Tower pond but it will be considerably warmer than Lucky Peak.........Tom |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the tip on somewhere else to swim! Just got an update email on the race - looks like swim waves just slightly shifted. Now I get to be 4th-to-last instead of 3rd-to-last - woohoo! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Y'all are going to put me to shame!! I just got back from basic training and still want to "race" this but haven't had a lot of time in the water or on the bike. I feel strong though so am thinking that I'm going to go ahead and show up to this race since I'm already registered for it. The worst thing that could happen is that I get DQ'd but hey, that's better than not trying. I doubt I would get dq'd. I definitely won't be racing this though! Boise is a great venue for a 70.3 |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yah, not making the cutoffs...but they're pretty generous cut offs. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 11 days until the race. With it being my first HIM I'm starting to get a bit of the jitters. I keep reading about headwinds all day on the bike - jikes! I'd rather climb mountains. Running 13 mile. Yea I did that once 30 years ago. Yesterday I practiced a very slow pace. One that I could just keep going at. I "ran" over 11 miles. A big jump over my typical run, but it was SO slow. I think the trick for me will be to eat constantly on the bike and start the run off slow. I just hope it isn't too hot. It looks like there will be water every mile so that should be just right for me if it's 85. For some reason I feel the need to set a time goal, but I have no confidence that my assumptions/expectations are even close to reality. How does everyone else come up with an expected time when they are doing (or did) their first HIM? |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is my first HIM as well. I am starting to get real nervous. My wife had our first child just about two months ago, Tristan he is awesome and i love being a Father. But my wife didn't do very well for the delivery so we were in the hospital for quite a while, and when we got home I had to take time off work to take care of my wife and son. So training was definitely put on the back burner. I lost a little over a month of training as i just started back up about three weeks ago. I don't doubt that i will finish, it's just that my goal time keeps going up and up as i get closer to the race. so i guess I'll just see how it goes and i'll definitely be able to improve next year.... |

New user ![]() | ![]() Hi everybody and greetings from Finland! I must say that I´m getting nervous (or freaking out) also here. I haven´t been writing to this forum, but I have been reading it a lot! IM Boise 70.3 will be my first HIM and I have about one year of training behind. My husband is a PRO (and racing in IM CDA) and I´m also a board member of Finnish Triathlon Association, but just recently I have started to do this by myself. We are flying to USA on Monday and I hope that I will adapt to the time difference quickly. Last time when we were in Hawaii IM 2007, it took me four days to recover from travelling... Even longer when coming back home. My goal is to finish and have fun while doing it! ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, folks. The get-together is a GO! Friday evening dinner/cocktails looks like the best bet. I'll try to get us something at a local pasta establishment. What I need now is simply a number of people that will be showing up and a time preference (early PM, late PM etc). I will be available on Thursday-Friday for tours, course info and other general knowledge questions. www.boiseweekly.com is a great source of local activities. WARNING! This a left-leaning publications whose viewpoints may not reflect your own. ![]() BTW: I work at a local LBS so if anyone has a bike problem, we can get you taken care of ASAP! Again, welcome to Boise 70.3 and I (and I think I can speak for all the local BTers) look forward to meeting you all. jeff |

I'll be there. Early evening or late works for me. I am driving in from Portland either Wednesday evening or Thursday evening. If I come in Wednesday I will probably bike some of the course on Thursday to get a feel for one of the more challenging sections. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff: I defnitely prefer early dinner, ya know by the time you get settled in, order, blah blah blah. I still can't shake being an early bird despite the 2:00 p.m. start. Thanks for the tip about your bike knowledge. I"m now obsessing about turning it over to the luggage monkeys at the airport and if it will make it through the carousel on the other side ......Yeah first time traveling with bike, what can I say! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd love to meet up with some fellow BT'ers. I'm also available for any local advice that you might wish. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm driving up from Los Angeles - leaving on Thursday morning, arrive late morning/early afternoon on Friday, check-in at the expo, drop my bike off at T1 and I'm good to go. I'd be down with meeting up. Another vegetarian to add to the mix, but I can find something to eat pretty much anywhere other than a churrascaria, LOL. To all those that are doing this as a first HIM....relax, take it all in, and have FUN!!! Its definitely something you won't forget, but at the end of the day, its just another, albeit very large and very well organized, race. If you're trained, you'll have no problems. There is no feeling like running down that finisher chute (other than running down the chute at a 140.6). See y'all next weekend. On a side note, this new policy of only posting hard links for bib#s SUCKS. How long are they gonna wait? With the amount that we all pay for these races I don't think its asking too much for WTC to keep a web dev on retainer to make the results/lists, etc available as soon as they are ready. -John |
