Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad to hear I'm not the only one whose life (work, family, etc.) tends to get in the way of training. It's better to go into a race undertrained rather than overtrained. I've put the volume in and I'm confident I'll finish as long as I can get through the first 1/2 of the brutal bike course. I'm a back-of-the-pack racer, so I'll be finishing when most of you are at the food tents, packing up your stuff, or getting your massages! Good luck everyone! |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I signed up for this earlier in the summer. I'm a little worried about the bike course--for people who have trained on it, just how steep is it? If I can average ~23 mph for 30+ miles flat, what should I be looking to hold on this course? As of right now I am planning on doing 20 mph for the first 20 miles then re-assesing after that, if the course really is THAT steep though I don't know if I'll want to go out slower. Any advice from people from the area would be appreciated. Can't wait to see all of your out there. FYI this is my first Tri ever, and I am super excited! |

You will not average 20 mph on this part. And if you do manage to get close to that average, you will be dead for the rst of the race. The first 2 miles are cruising, but as soon as you hit Sweet Road, you are in a constant climb for about 9 miles. The next 11 are definitaley downhill and can make up some speed, but that little dip at the end is a big dip. As mentioned in the post above, you can easily hit 45+mph on that down hill, then the uphill is pretty intense. The last part of the course is where you are going to make your time up. Again, read the excellent course description above, it's dead on. See you out there. |

I highly recommend you don't use mph for your goal pace, especially on the hills. Since its your first tri, it sounds like you don't have a power meter, but do you have a heart rate monitor? Overall, you will have a much faster bike split and most likely run split if you keep a consistent effort throughout the race. Yes, you will be slower up the hills, but you'll have a lot left in the tank to finish strong. Especially considering this is your first tri, I strongly recommend not killing yourself on those hills. |

Any advice from people from the area would be appreciated. Can't wait to see all of your out there. FYI this is my first Tri ever, and I am super excited! You should not pace based on speed, but you can get an idea of speed/power with this calculator http://bikecalculator.com/wattsUS.html. If you are doing 23mph on say an Olympic (25miles) that would require 204 watts for a 170lb athlete in aero position on a 0% grade. Very roughly, you should be able to hold 95% of that power over double the distance. Let's be conservative and say 90% for a HIM vs Oly. 90% of 204w means you could hold 184watts. This would give you 22mph on a flat HIM course. So if you can hold 23mph for an Oly, you would be able to hold 22mph for a HIM, on a flat course. Now apply power in the context of the 2% grade. To hold 22mph on a 2% grade would require 359watts. You will blow up. 20mph 305watts....still blow up. It's only when you go down to 14.5mph that you hit 185watts. If the above is right this is your pace going up a 2% grade. These numbers will depend on how aero you are, your weight....and there are sections steeper than 2%. But you can play with the numbers and get a feel of what makes sense. |

Any advice from people from the area would be appreciated. Can't wait to see all of your out there. FYI this is my first Tri ever, and I am super excited! Do not focus on mph. Focus more on level of exertion for your pacing. From what people are saying, a 20 mph avg after the 20 miles will be near impossible due to all the climbing. If this is your first tri, just a word of caution --- don't go to hard in the middle and latter portions of the bike to make up for a slow start (due to hills). Biggest rookie mistake is going too hard on the bike. And as they say, "There is no such thing as a good bike and a bad run." If you have a fast bike followed by a bad run, 9 out of 10 times it's because you paced yourself improperly (too hard) on the bike. Good luck and have fun! This is my favorite distance to race. Unfortunately for me, work really got in the way of my training Apr-end of June. I've been putting together solid training weeks the past few weeks, but it's too little too late and the volume isn't where it should be (it can't be where it should be, because then I'll prob force myself into injury). I'm just hoping to survive this one and have fun. I am expecting it to be an hour slower than my last HIM. |

Last weekend I went with a group of four and climbing up Sweet road I could see dozens of other riders. (8am start) I'm not sure if I'm going to do the race course or something longer/hillier, since this is my peak biking week. Edited by steves_training 2010-08-26 8:18 AM |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, thanks for the tips everyone. It sounds like I shouldn't really be worried about my bike speed per say. I have done all of my training up to now based on body feedback, so I guess I'll just have to be listening hard on race day. Thanks all for the tips, and hopefully my lack of hill training won't kill me during this race. See you all out there. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() cusetri - 2010-08-26 1:50 PM this course is not that hilly. Except for the first hour of climbing for most of us mere mortals! It's not that steep and there are plenty of hills in the area that it does not go up, but I wouldn't call it flat, if you get my drift. Look at the course profile, overall it's less than 2000' of climbing over 56 miles, so it's not too bad. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So is the first 11 miles of this course kinda similar to the last 11 miles of the 56-mile loop at IMLP? |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all, Wanted to switch gears from the bike stuff and see what people were doing with the swim. So getting in good pool time in an outdoor 50 m. Hoping to get 1-2 OWS soon. Are most going with a wetsuit? I'm not sure if it is a big deal I won't be using one. I know all the great advantages to one but I simply can't afford one at this time. I'm not sure if I will be te only person wearing a swimming trunk with a rash guard. I guess if more experience people think it is a must I can maybe rent one. I do plan on getting one in the future though. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There are a lot of places that will rent you a wet suite for the event if that is an option for you? Edited by dlltfw 2010-08-26 7:17 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Water temps are supposedly going to be in the high-60's. That's not cold enough that you're going to suffer hypothermia in the water or anything for the amount of time you'll be in there. It's not exactly warm either. I'll be coming from Texas so that's friggin' cold to me. I did a race recently in which the water temp was 89 degrees in the lake we swam in. I will be wearing mine. |
