You Young ladies are very inspiring!!!! I live here in Phoenix and ride on the Beeline frequently. The sad reality is this ---- the wind blows, literally. The jet stream here blows systems in from the southwest in the fall and spring (The April IMAZ were beyond breezy) so most of the time the wind is a headwind coming down that part of the Beeline. We dont get a lot of wind from the south except this time of year (monsoon). So, it there is a front change it will be windy but it usually kicks up later in the day so motivation for us all to get out of the swim faster. IMAZ 2010 will be my first time competing here (just did IMSG and the weather could not have been better - so here's to hoping for the same good luck with weather).

it's an awesome feeling... being 40, you got it made.. believe in yourself... never doubt your abilities.. and listen to those who don't believe, because they don't have the guts to try like you do...  my avatar is a pic of me after I crossed the finish line at 11:20 pm.. The guy peeking over my shoulder is my 85 year old father..

It damn well better because after Ironman Wisconsin this year I have my sights set on Tempe for 2011!!  I have been lurking on this thread in anticipationWink

As a side note, I think the days of racing selling out that fast are gone for awhile.  It has slowed down as the economy slowed down, in addition WTC has increased the number of slots.  I think as long as you are prepared at noon the following day to go online and register you should be good for almost all of the races.

Not sure how many slots are being added, but I think the race sold out within an hour online last November...so act quickly.

gerardahughes - 2010-05-31 10:30 AM Will you be able to sign up race day if you are a volunteer, was wanting to do it next year, trying to figure out the best way to get in.

If you volunteer you can sign up the day AFTER the race. They open the sign-up line at 6AM, and people with volunteer t-shirts have first shot at signing up.

I'm doing the Tour de Tucson the Saturday before and was thinking about heading over to try to sign up up afterwards.  Would I still be able to volunteer if I can't make it to Tempe until Sunday morning?

If not, then anyone can just get in line at 6AM and sign up?  Seems not as assured as being able to volunteer, but better than trying to do online?

Thanks in advance.

I signed up in 2008, the morning after the April race for the November 2009 race.. Teh did it funky in 2008 because they dropped the April race.. If you really have your heart set on this one, I would be at Tempe Town Park by about 6 to get in line on Monday, 11/22..  I got there on Monday morning at about 0545 and there were only about 6 people in line..  On that day you got a number assigned to you and a special link to Active.com to sign up on line...  Now, I believe you pay right then and there...

Well I've finally completed my move to Arizona and we're comfortably settled in the town of Prescott.  I'll definitely be going down to IMAZ and will plan to be there as official BT cheerleader and photographer.  As it gets closer, I'll try and get a list of all the names and race numbers and hopefully I can get pictures of as many of you as possible.  That way if you would like a copy, it won't cost you the typical arm-and-a-leg of normal race photos.  I know it's tough to keep track of a couple dozen racers, but I'll do the best I can for action shots.  But the pre-race photo ops are a bit easier!

This totally depends upon what you sign up to do and talking to the volunteer Captain.  For IMCdA this year, I was signed up to help with collecting bike special needs from 0500-0700. Our team captain told us where to be and when, and I was there, got my volunteer t-shirt, did my work (and my goodness people, you really don't need to put the kitchen sink in your special needs bag..really...haha!), and then went on to cheer everyone for the rest of the race. Worked perfectly.  I plan on being at IMAZ to volunteer and cheer and then sign up the next day.
I'm sure you can work it out with volunteer team captain.

Wetsuite choice on race day? I've already asked this question. I want to wear my sleeveless wetsuit BUT due to the coldness of the water (at least in 2009) it was suggested that I wear speed sleeves. I think I would wear a size small which has proved to be in short supply and these sleeves are $50 to $70 once tax and shipping gets added on.

I have also read a review from someone who did not have the ideal size of speed sleeves and suffered from a lot of chaffing that proved to be problematic for the rest of their race.

My new question is this. Did anybody swim in Arizona in 2009 with a sleeveless wetsuit ONLY (no speed sleeves)? Ideally I just want to swim in my longjohn to keep it simple and have the free arm movement that I love in a sleeveless suit.

Is swimming without sleeves just stupid due to the coldness of the water OR did some of the 2009 racers have success using only sleeveless wetsuits. My main concern is being so cold after the swim that I won't be able to function properly in T1. Overall, I seem to handle cold water well and was hoping to just swim sleeveless on race morning.

Any insight and advice is greatly appreciated!!!!

There were few people in sleeveless.  I train through the summers here and when the temps start to drop in October/November it's hard to get used to the low 60 degree water temps. I know quite a few people who had a long T1 because they couldn't warm up. If you have experience swimming in cold water and your body is acclimated to this water temp, I'd say wear your sleeveless.  Otherwise, it's a good idea to wear a full wetsuit.  I remember my hands and feet were numb getting out of the water and I started to get feeling back 10 miles into the bike.

Yeah, actually about 40 minutes. I didn't change in T1 so I guess it's my fault I was cold. Once I got on the Beeline I was fine. This year, I think I'm getting a throw-away jacket to wear on the first part of the bike.
