Hi all-

I'd love to join if you will take another newbie.  I'm a little intimidated to join a group that already has so much history.  But, I'm also really interested in being in a group that has as much traffic as this one historically has.  Okay, let's face it, I come to BT way too much and a fast-moving group would fit my style.

I'm new to the tri world, every part of it.  I am training for my first sprint distance in June.  I'm on week 12 of the 20 week 3x BT olympic plan.  It has been going well.  I'm still nice and slow, but feeling more comfortable.  Six months ago I started slowly running because I was taking a break from my local Y (my son was going through a biting stage, and I thought it was best to find something else to do before he got kicked out!).  Then a little after that a friend mentioned she was looking for some to train with for a tri, and somehow I said I would do it.  Then came my first time swimming laps and my first time riding a bike since childhood...   I'm not a natural athlete, but I do try to work hard to make up for it.

damn, i saw austin and was hoping this was lance.  but louise will work.  welcome!

better?          :-)

much better!  Thanks.

hahaha!!! very good!  glad you're here!    i wasn't a swimmer, biker or runner growing up either.   now i kick a$$!    HAHAHAHA!!!  no  actually i don't.

Sending out a request for both HTFU and sympathy.

Added a new drug to my RA regimen 3 weeks ago.  You've seen the ads on TV - Enbrel.  High hopes for really helping, my doc has been encouraging me to step up to this level of meds for quite a while now.  Problems are:

 1) $$$.  Insurance will cover most, but we're looking $700 per shot, and I need one a week.  Frustrating process getting all of the approvals in line.  The pharmaceutical company sent out the first round for free, but now we're scrambling.

2) 3-6 months before results kick in.....odds are good it will work, but not a guarantee, and that's a huge wait to know one way or the other.

3) Short term side effects that I'm feeling are significant pain at injection, soreness for 2-3 days at injection site; and yukky flu-like symptoms for 24-48 hours post injection.

4) Long-term cons include big increase in cancer rates...plus a real decrease in immune functions.  Scary.

Silly as it sounds, my biggest frustration now is trying to fit life and workouts around the 'feeling crappy' times.  Doc says I won't cause any additional problems training during the yukky times - will just affect how I feel.  But I FEEL like I have the flu.

WAH.

Linda - I'm so sorry to hear this. Those side effects sound awful! I hope they'll ease up as you get used to the medication. Hang in there - you are super tough, and I have a feeling you won't let this slow you down.

velcromom - 2011-04-08 6:34 PM I get a tiny bit faster on every hard group ride.....the humiliation factor helps me!!  Same with group swims, but if the others aren't faster, I'll slack off.

competitive drive can be a beautiful thing!

NAME: Matthew

STORY: This is my second season at tris.  I did 2 sprints, an olympic, aquavelo (IM distance) and 2 tinmans last year and had a blast, except for a midseason hernia that I didn't figure out until the fall, when I went into surgery and then a winter recovery plan.  I had already signed up for IMCDA before figuring out I had a hernia, so I went into IM training without a full base due to my injury downtime, but making the most of it so far.  The fact the mentor had/has a hernia I'm hoping to gain some benefit from that experience so I can stay injury free and make it to the starting line for IMCDA.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, daughter is 2y/o.

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm half way through the 20 week BT Beginner Ironman plan.  Swimming is comfortable, biking is weakest area and run is ok.  Need to build endurance.

2011 RACES:  My first tri is next weekend Rumpus in Bumpass Internation, then Kinetic Tinman in May and Ironman Couer d'Alene end of June.  Rest of season TBD...

WEIGHTLOSS: I like to keep on top of my nutrition, but no real weightloss goals other than improved general fitness.

WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THIS MG?
I was in a mentor group last season and it really helped having lots of group support and I actively support the group throughout the season. I look forward to sharing a season of group success.

Serious swimming question ahead:  Talk to me about your kick and its importance to your swim.....

I asked my Master's coach why she puts so much kicking in our workouts....her response is most triathletes rely too heavily on their wetsuits and kick very little in the pool/OWS as a result.  She believes kicking (flutter, 2 beat, even 6 beat) engage the core and assist in better rotation.  Her suggestion was to maintain a kick even while in OWS.  Normally I barely kick (or at least I don't think I do), but today I really concentrated on it and it did seem to provide better body position and more glide.

What say you?

LOL! I don't kick.

I've tried, but it looks and feels like I'm flailing about, not pretty.  I adopted my own 2 beat kick, and usually I power one kick per stroke. When I went for a swim with the triathletes swim last week, the coach told me that I need to KICK! Flutter kick...and I've tried, and I'm SLOWER when I kick.    My hips and chest is pretty much floating on top, so I never have issues with "sinking legs".   I do kicking drills to strengthen my legs and in hopes that I'll eventually get the "KICK" while swimming...but no dice.  All my power in swimming is from the arms, has nothing to do with the legs....that's just my opinion.

I got a Garmin 310xt  a few months ago and LOVE it!

I found out that all my previous runs were shorter and slower than I had thought though...

I love putting a workout and letting it guide me through rather than having to do any thinking.

My only disappointment in that you have to put it in a swim cap if you want to get accurate GPS readings when swimming.

Happy Sat. AM

Sorry about the hamstring Kyla.  Take a few days and let it heal.  You'll be back at it soon enough.

Linda - I hope things work out w/ the new meds.  Stay strong and feel free to use us for some cheering up or a kick in the a$s. :-)

Race went ok last night despite a cold, rainy evening.  Tony sucked it up and came along at well so date night was a success.  My time was a little slower but still consistent.  23:55 about 7 sec slower than last week.  Those 5ks are still hard.  I accomplish my one goal of running a better route.  I shaved .02 off my mileage.  I'd like to figure the official course by the end of the series.

Finally, welcome all new members.  We are a crazy bunch but we have fun.

And for the Richmond person (sorry can't remember your name now), we will be at Rumpass on Sat. as well.  Tony is racing this year.  I opted not to freeze my butt in the water.  I did the Int. 2 years ago.
