That is a lot of waves! I agree that it is a little weird how the pros go and then the older guys, with the young quicks starting much later.

More importantly, Bass (40-44) gets a 4 min headstart over Holdstock (40-44) and Lambooy (40-44) (and apologies for those of you in our age group that I am missing!!) in the middle-aged smackdown.

You fish will be past me before the first turn buoy.  Maybe even by the 3rd marker buoy...

It's going to be a long day out there.  And then the bike will start.

That's annoying how they split up age groups like that into different waves. One of the fun things about racing is checking out the age of people you pass on their calf. Kinda throws a monkey wrench in things if you are competitive, if you don't all start at same time.

It'll be fun for me to see you guys whiz past me at some point during the race, since I start ahead of the 40ish men!

I am in wave 17. With an hour to wait around, I will have ample time to make a last nervous trip(s) to the Porto johns.

I'm in wave 8 with a bunch of y'all.

Say hello when you pass me on the bike. I'll look a lot like a triathlete, but not performing like one.

Should be a fun day though. I'm looking forward to getting back into the sport.

Do you guys think the swim will be wetsuit permitted? Not wet suit legal (78ish or whatever), but wet suit legal (i.e., 80-something). Considering how cold spring has been, I'm wondering if the water temps are going to be that high, but who knows what a week or two at 90+ will do.

I hope so.

I'm also hoping it gets above 60 soon so I can get in and practice swimming in the lake.  I'm longing for some non-turn long swims

Water temps rose 3 degrees in 1 day! Yea, the premise of wearing a wetsuit is pretty much out of the water!

(pardon the pun)

Looking back at the historical data for June 2 in Jordan Lake, some years it would have been borderline legal, and others it would have been flat out not legal. Jordan Lake is huge, but so is its catchment area, so if it rains 2 inches between Raleigh and Greensboro a couple of days out, all that cold rain water  will  flow into the lake. It will be interesting to watch it. Personally I hope it is not wetsuit legal but I'm in the minority...hehehehe

Louis,

Were you using the WTC rule of 76.1 degrees (not USAT 78) to determine legal or not?

Thanks

Alan

Good point Alan. When I looked I was using the USAT 78 degrees. I seem to recall most June 2nds were in the 78, 79, 80 degree range so def not legal per WTC. I'll go back and double check.

not legal, but still allowed right... per the 82.1 degree rule or whatever. i'm not looking to qualify for anything, just looking to finish. And although I can finish without wetsuit, definitely makes things easier with.

Since we are on the topic of wetsuits, here's something to think about:

Because of the possible wetsuit/non wetsuit issue and the race day logistics, WTC stated ahead of time that (the one and only) IM NYC would be wetsuit legal.

Ironman 70.3 Raleigh will have somewhat similar race day logistics issues (because of the 2 transition areas).  Do you think they would make a similar statement before the race regarding wetsuits?

I believe wetsuits are legal, but will exclude you from any awards, between 76.1 and 83.8deg. Suits are prohibited above 83.8deg

I doubt it. I did a 5150 race last year that was point to point. The temperature for the water was really close to 76 so they gave us an extra plastic bag for T1 so they could transport to T2. It ended up being wetsuit legal but they didn't call it till about an hour before the race start. Obviously I am only guessing here, I sure wouldn't mind the extra help from my wetsuit.

That is AWESOME!

I had searched high and low on the internet and only found about half of that!  So used to googling, totally forgot about plain 'ole asking someone!

Thank you!

It's academic for me as I'm nowhere close to getting on the podium, but it's nice to know that it's been wetsuit non-award legal temps for the last decade!  I need all the help I can get, but wouldn't mind a nice 70-72 for the wetsuit so it's not too hot.
