![]() | ![]() mr2tony - 2012-11-05 10:25 AM GomesBolt - 2012-11-05 9:24 AM How does it make Powell's endorsement look cheap? If someone as high profile as Powell endorsed Romney, the Reps would've put him on TV weeks ago. I think this is news only because 1) Obama has been pushing Colin Powell's endorsement pretty hard in the swing states (even though he endorsed him last time) and 2) there has never been this type of mass endorsement from General Officers of any presidential candidate. This is very abnormal. They've got people from several generations on that list. Multiple Marine Corps Commandants, A few Aces, quite a few big names. This isn't shocking November surprise type news, but it sure does make Obama's Colin Powell endorsement look cheap.
His profile as the former Secretary of State under a Republican Administration has some gravity to it, but he endorsed the same guy last time and I don't think there's any news that he is endorsing Obama again. The list supporting Romney is a list of big names. Like I said, they span generations, there are a few dozen service chiefs, at least 2 Joint Chiefs Chairs, a few Vice Chairs. That's a big list of big names and it has never happened before. That's why it's news.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A bunch of mostly retired war types that virtually no one has ever heard of supporting a hawkish foreign policy prez wanna-be who wants to give them a raise = a big YAWN. Not news and will have zero impact on the election is my take.

Never happened before? That alone makes me suspicious, never mind that the article cited in support of the list is from a conservative web site that is less than a year old. Smells like Republican propaganda to me. |

I hate to hurt the ego of military men, especially generals, but nobody knows who these guys are. Lose the rank in front of the names and I may recognize two or three. The general public who doesn't keep up on current events probably would recognize zero. These are not ``big names.'' |

No, you're most definitely right. That's why I don't just say "ho hum". It's a big deal to get a former General Officer to endorse a politician. They don't do so because most of them are more focused on sitting on charitable or corporate boards or they're in consultancies and don't want to skyline themselves because they do have to work with the administration. These aren't big public names in the public sphere like Colin Powell or Wesley Clark. But they're plenty big names. You can say though that Powell's one claim to fame over and above say a Tommy Franks or a Hugh Shelton (appointed to JCS by Clinton) is that he was the Sec State under Bush (who the current administration blames for everything wrong in the world and country). Getting this number of GOs (500) to sign-on to an ad in a paper (which they paid for) endorsing any political candidate is a pretty significant thing. Not for the votes it'll garner, but for the act itself. If you show me a similar thing from 4 or 8 years ago, great, if you choose to ignore it, fine, but it is significant. |

![]() | ![]() JoshR - 2012-11-05 2:10 PM I'm not a military man, but can you explain why they did this? I can't explain why they did it. What I find really confusing is the timing of such a thing. It's almost like they were aggitated with Colin Powell representing that the Military is behind Obama and they pooled their pennies and pooled their signatures for a full-page "FU" at him. It doesn't make much sense to me. If it were a month ago and they were making the rounds on the pundits, then it would make more sense. Maybe they'll explain over time.

I know Obama's performance is hurting him. this election should be a slam dunk for anyone. But people do not seem to get excited about Romney, and he has problems himself. Ryan was another bone thrown to the far right that did nothing to "gain" votes and probably lost some moderates. I think this election will come out to who shows up at the polls. Lot's of unexcited people will not show up for Obama, but I do not see a lot of swing voters going out of their way for Romney. Obama should have already had his bags packed, but the fact that it is too close to call, and he is the incumbent, tells me we are probably in for 4 more years. Told ya. |

I'm so glad I didn't start this thread.... OK OK, I was totally on the same page so could have just as easily started it. It did come down to the turnout model and I really bought into the idea that the turnout wouldn't be anywhere close to 2008 and would be either even or even a slight R+ model. I was wrong and the national pollsters were right. I think the turnout was around a D+6 and Romney needed a D+2 or better I believe. Congrats to my liberal friends. |

I forget which channel they were discussing it on, but someone said that the reason the D's had a higher turnout is the number of new voters were primarily D's. |
