No racing for me. Good luck to Jayne at the Huff! You'll do great! My biggest accomplishment of the year was falling back in love with swimming. I was on my way to becoming just a runner, but a new masters program got me back in the pool. Of course I still have that little problem with never riding my bike... It's great to see so many new people in the group, and SO many from the great PNW. I'll echo what Suzy said earlier - please put your name in your signature line to help everyone get to know each other! |

Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN SSMinnow - 2012-12-26 5:27 PM padarinsmith - 2012-12-26 3:53 PM What is prolotherapy? I currently tape before every run and stretch like crazy. Check out this link. It works well for some people, including me, but not for others. It basically is an injection of sugar water that causes inflammation in the area to speed healing. I think the key is finding the right doctor to do the injections. Where the doctor injects it matters. It took me 3 sessions spaced several weeks apart to really feel like it was making progress. The taping allowed me to continue to train while I got the injections. I started developing PF this fall, and managed to reverse it by taping, stretching, and paying more attention to my non-running shoe choices. I used to wear flip-flops or go barefoot around the house a lot. I switched to wearing more supportive shoes (in my case, Keene slip-on sandals), and it made a huge difference. Good luck! |

Got back in tonight from a week at my Mom's house in MS. Leaving tomorrow morning for a week in Pittsburgh. Goodbye sunshine, hello snow!! I am excited about Tommy getting to experience snow for the first time. I wanted to run in the snow, but can't find anything going on this weekend or NY day in Pitt, so I guess I'm done 'til 2013. My greatest accomplishment this year was dropping thirty pounds back at the beginning of the year and keeping it off the rest of the year. I am hoping to do it again this year to reach a reasonable weight before November. I really don't want to drag 200# all over PCB. Good luck this weekend, Jayne. |

My greatest accomplishment this season was finally getting enough courage to sign up for a 50k... I let it intimidate me for years, and signing up was the hardest part. The training, and race were the fun part... If you want to do something don't hesitate. We just recently moved from Halifax to Fredericton so I'm familiar with the area. I would love to try the EPIC race myself, but there is another triathlon here in Fredericton on that weekend that I want to try. Good luck with your training and enjoy the mild Nova Scotia winters (we miss them!!) jon |

Veteran 256 Madison,AL | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Good Morning, I dont have any races this weekend. I am planning on doing a 42 mile hill ride on 31 Dec and a 4 mile race on New Year's Day. I was also looking into signing up for a trail run.I havent done one of those before. I have the option to do a 5k or 15k trying to decide wich way to go. I am not really in 9 mile shape but need to get distance up for HIM. My greatest accomplishment would have to be finishing a 10 Miler (not the time i wanted but finished) |

I lost about 10 pounds 1 1/2 years ago and kept it off until just recently. Ah well. I know what diet works best for me and it does not include Christmas cookies! I try to follow a clean diet with very little processed stuff. I leave the goodies for social events that are out of the house. Anyone else want to share how they keep the weight off? Lots of training helps too. lol |

Like you, I try to limit processed foods and I wait at least two hours between eating one thing to the next. My office is my house so I have access to food ALL THE TIME! If I don't watch it, I can sit in front of the MAC with a box or bag of something and eat half of it. At 4'10", that is a recipe for weight gain! |

With the kids on break, I am not so busy and have more time to eat. Lol We will be packing up the 8 tins of cookies to go in the freezer today. They are too accesible sitting on the counter! This is me!! Usually I'm squeezing in a meal that is not quite enough, but gets me to the next snack. But with everyone home and lots of baking going on, there is lots of grazing. I know my body, though -- I'll hop on the scale once the kids are back in school, focus for a week, and I'll be where I was before this holiday indulging. I made my husband take some of the caramel corn I made into work today, so that's gone, phew. And when other kids are over I'm VERY generous with the Christmas cookies right now!!! Eat up, kids! Biggest accomplishment for 2012 was running more miles this year then I ever have in my life, and I think I passed up my old record sometime in November. I'm in a good place with life balance and I'd like to keep it there for awhile. |

Works great at resturants, but I have to really hustle to cut my dinner in half at home before my better half's dinner gets cold. Focus |

Lots of training helps too. lol Hi Margo. For me, I started weight training this year and have dropped pounds/inches a lot easier and quicker than just cardio alone. This is actually the first holiday season where I have lost weight rather than gained. As for my diet, I've started prepping my food for the week in advance. On Sunday, I will hard boil a bunch of eggs, chop up my veggies, cook up a bunch of chicken, etc. and divide it out for my breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks during the week and I always take my breakfast & luch to work with me. That way I have no excuse not to eat well. It has helped tremendously!! Especially the evenings when I go workout after I get home from work and am to tired and hungry to think. |

Member 17 Chehalis, WA | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN I did not do any races this Christmas week, but did a 5K with Cheryl and Michelle on 12/22. (We all did awsome. We have all stayed at our time or increased termendously) My single greatest accomplishment this year would be making to every practice run since I started. I think in the past that is my hardest thing to overcome, not making an excuse or the time to practice. Whether it be the rain (Washington it always rains lol) or having my 3 year old son, which makes it even harder to get out there. I purchased a jogging stroller to help with this situation. (he still doesn't want to sit still in the stroller, he wants to run with mommy. ) My goal this next year is to make an entire 5K without stopping and having to walk. I have been sick the last three runs and have been in need of my inhailer. I really hope this new year brings in good health and even more improvement in my time. One thing I have learned from my last race is to tune out the people around me and not let the hordes of people passing me discourage me or somehow make me increase my speed, but to keep my pace and keep a strong state of mind. (Still working on it) Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and is bringing in the New Year with great goals!! |

I used to wear flip-flops or go barefoot around the house a lot. I switched to wearing more supportive shoes (in my case, Keene slip-on sandals), and it made a huge difference. Good luck! Hi Darin, I have managed my PF into submission with rest, ice, taping, and a lot of foam rolling and trigger point (calves are my main culprit but IT band type rolling of the quads somehow seems to help a great deal). Also, I use a lacrosse ball to roll under my foot before and after running. I think you can use a golf ball but I like the rubbery surface of the lacrosse ball. I would highly recommend not running through any type of pain. I know that seems crazy when you have races scheduled but it is possible to develop and maintain your aerobic fitness with cycling and swimming when you can't run. Once you can wake up and step down on your foot without any pain (or very mild awareness), I'd recommend a nice run/walk strategy. I used that last season for a marathon, 2 half marathons and my HIM run and still had a pretty good outcome on mostly less than 50 miles/month. Yes, per month!!! I echo Julia's suggestion about wearing good shoes in the house. Can't attest to the prolotherapy as I never tried that, but acupuncture helped a little when the inflammation was really severe. Good luck. It's been a long road but laying off running was a big factor in finally getting better. It's nice to see such great chatting in the group. I'm trying to remember everyone's names but am getting older (not as old as Suzy and Linda...but still!) and wish one of our smart, super techy, excel kind of peeps could do a spreadsheet for us???? |

Knee has been iffy, but I'm adding volume slowly and hope to find the joy again soon. I swim 3 days a week with Masters group, ride indoors or out 5 days a week, run 3-4 times a week. My love is the bike. I feel really good in the water, but I've lost that loving feeling about running. 2013 Races: Several Sprints, trying for 3 Oly's and 2 HIM (Lake Stevens and Black Diamond) The calander is open, but I have a few ideas of century+ cycling events I will do. If I can get the run fitness back I will do 4 Half mary's (Mercer Island, Cinco deMayo and Seattle RnR and the Seattle HM in November. Mark--welcome! You have a great story. I look forward to hearing more about how you turned your life around! ^^^look someone as old as me.....woohoo !! |

Back in the pool next week, and maybe some spin classes. Need to work on a plan for 2013. As far as accomplishments, I hit none of my workout distances, and was actually less time training from the year before. Did a lot of weight training so I definitely feel stronger. My greatest accomplishment was taking 30 minutes off my Olympic time biking was a lot stronger. Good luck this weekend Jayne, you will be awesome, make sure you bring your wetsuit |

Chatham Ontario | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Happy Holiday Season everyone. How is everyone doing. After pretty much taking most of this year off for a Knee injury that I suffered from being hit by a car in June. I have finally had surgery on my knee Dec 21 and had it repaired. I am now laying around the house recovering and hoping I can get back at triathlons for 2013 to some level. Probably just aiming at making sure I stay in shape and skipping the plan of a HIM this year. But time will tell. I need to recover properly and make sure that I take this season safely and make sure that my knee recovers. I hope to make a return to this mentor group as well and be more active. Many other reasons left 2012 as a rough year. So I am hoping for a much better 2013 Look forward to hearing and talking to everyone. |
