I understand that your group has some history but there also seems to be a lot of knowledge. There was too much "chatter" in most of the other groups. I couldn't really find a fit anywhere else. I am completely new to triathlons! Boy am I getting tired of saying that. I have been a "runner" for as long as I can remember. Through out high school and my military career I was alway the one keeping up with the males. I am smart enough to know that the type of endurance I am going to need to get though a triathlon is going to be more then I am used to from just running. I have not had a good workout routine since before July 2012 when I had foot surgery (a modified kidner procedure.) Intermittently I began working out but I kept quitting due to pain. According to the doctors, there is not actually anything being injured it is just residual pain from the metal placed and from tendinitis. I will have it regardless. Mentally I just needed to push past it. Having a goal has worked. Here is my goals at this point for this upcoming year: April:1/2 marathon August: IG Triathlon (Sprint Distance) September: IG Triathlon (Sprint Distance) These three races are part of a Triple Crown title. I figured if Im going to do it then I might as well really do it. I might add the Army 10miler in November but I will cross that will be nothing by that point. Right now I am working on getting my mileage up at about a 10:45/mile pace. Strengthening my ankle and foot. Lifting and strengthening my arms, back, and shoulders, and legs. I am about to take a boot camp class to get some cross training. I would like to get in the pool but I have no idea what to do and I 'm afraid I might drowned (I do know how to swim) and I have purchased a bike, although I am scared to death to ride on the road. Respectfully, Crystal |

Respectfully, Crystal Hi Crystal, Welcome to BT! You are most welcome to this group, ALL are. It is interesting to here there is to much “Chatter” out in other groups. This group has a lot of seasoned Tri veterans. It really is a rolling group with what every tri training topic pops up. Many of the members are running their own group or are co-mentoring. I think if you should post a Bio of yourself so the group can know a little about you. Welcome to the group. Swimming we have a lot of talent here on that subject. Getting to the pool and getting wet is the first thing. Building a base swim fitness is some you will need to get started with soon. I suggest going a local pool learning the lap swim schedule then working your schedules to fit it in. Swimming maybe 2x a week to get started then move it up to 3x a week. If you can swim more, than better. Not knowing anything about your swim you will need to see what you can do. Just start by getting comfortable swimming in a lap lane non stop from one end to the other. You can rest at the wall. Knowing the length of the pool and if it’s in meters will help you determine your progress. So if it’s a 25 yard pool try swimming the length. If that is successful rest at the wall then swim back, now that is 50 yards you swam. You got to ask yourself. How tired and how out of wind are you? If you are ok go again, if not recovery at the wall for 1-2 minutes. Repeat until you get 500 yards or more. You’ll progress form there. The bike, do you have a trainer? Can you ride outside in the winter? Spin class at you local gym can help build some bike fitness. You should find a local bike club that does group ride. Explain to them you’re a new ridding on the road and I am sure you will get a lot of help with that. I’ll try to dig up some links for some additional info. Oh btw get a helmet if you don’t have one, you’ll need that anyway |

I agree with him that step one for swimming is to just get to the pool and see where you are at. Good luck, keep us posted and ask any questions you may have.

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Originally posted by rymac 1650TT in the pool today in 24:27. Chopped off 37 seconds in 4 weeks. Never felt this good in the water before and hitting sets I never thought possible 8 weeks ago...pretty cool feeling...just hope it continues. I guess I picked a good year for a bike/swim focus as this has been a nasty cold/snowy winter so far!! Ryan--killer swim improvement. Sorry if I haven't been keeping up, but what have you been doing differently last 2mo? Masters--frequency--program etc.? I too think you'll notice a difference in your running as well. Just some brief notes on where I'm at / what I'm doing. 1) Nutrition. Trying to dump the 5.5kg I gained after IM Japan attempt. Whole foods vegan both for health and weight reduction worked really well for me during IMJ training so I'm back on the veggie wagon. 2) Swim. I'm repeating Sheila T's Swim Speed Workouts progression, this time REALLY paying attention to the personal directions she sends (yeah ... she probably does that for a REASON, duh) and executing all of the above more closely and consistently. I'll also be going to 2-3 coached squad (not Masters ... I wish!) workouts per week, both of them headed up by Olympians (good ones) and Olympics coaches. I am absolutely the slowest person in the slowest lane at both the Bali one and the Perth one. It's fantastic motivation. 3) Bike. Starting general (base) training back up with Jorge's cycling program. I'll also be doing some mountain biking with partners/groups in Indonesia and Perth. 4) Run. Starting BarryP 3-2-1 VERY low, as in 10min/20min/30min! However, I do want to get into RUNNING ... because of continuous major interruptions to training, I've always patchworked with aquajogging, powerwalking, run:walk. 5) Strength. I have arthritis (from one of the tropical illnesses) in a number of major joints so I'll continue being consistent and diligent about this. I do a custom yoga routine. |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Need a suggestion, though I'm not sure an answer exists. I've been sick the past 3 weeks or so, and while I'm through most of it I'm still suffering with congestion, but my issue is an elevated HR. I start a workout 15-20 beats higher than normal, and then I'm hitting my "max" HR on efforts that should only be a Z3/4 effort, so I'm not doing the workouts at the level I would like to see. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Hi Crystal - welcome aboard the SBR Utopia train! The BarryP 3/2/1 running plan that Yanti mentions is one that many, many folks have had great success with in building run mileage back up in a sensible, long-term way especially when coming back from an injury. While I have never done it there are several here in the group that have used it successfully - just be apart with that foot! What resources do you have at your disposal for swimming? As an adult-onset swimmer myself (albeit for about 25 years now) the two biggest things I wish I had done when I started was 1) Get a few lessons and 2) Masters Swim do you have access to either? As far as cycling, while I personally get a great deal of joy out of road riding, you honestly can probably make much bigger gains via a structured indoor cycling plan. As you look for a bike I would also highly recommend investing in a trainer as well if it is in the budget. |

Neil - dont sweat it too much. When I come back from a layoff or prolonged illness I too wind up with my HR (sometimes wildly) uncoupled from my perceived effort - it is perfectly normal. It usually takes about 10~14 days for them to come back in line. I usually just elevate my zones by about 5 BPM in the interim, which is usually not enough to fully compensate but I figure it is better to come back a little conservatively. FWIW if I just ignore HR completely and run by RPE it takes longer for the two to get re-coupled. |

Then I finally went to to a good orthopedic doc who prescribed Deep Tissue Massage and after 6 session over 4 weeks I was good as new AND learned a lot about achilles maintenance to boot. Stay on top of it! Ya. It's a problem that started back in my swimming days with chronic tendinitis issues and then subsequent stiffness issues....need to be less dumb and more proactive about keeping my range of motion. My brother was giving me the "is that as far as I can dorsiflex your foot" line which was very similar to the "I am surprised you can walk in flat shoes" line the last time I saw a sports med when I was swimming. Apparently a part of my on call regimen is going to be stretching. Bringing the yoga mat to the hospital. Oh yaaaa. Overall feels better today. Went to watch the Hyundai Tournament of Champions (golf) with my parents, bro and aunt. Did some stretching while having to stand still and not speak. Oh golf.... |

There's no other explanation for her interest in me (or her program, ha ... actually, it's really not that bad, amazingly effective for not a lot of yardage, but takes some serious focus). Arend by late April? Game on. Especially since he seems to be using the weather as an excuse not to train INDOORS even ... ??? For the fishes, I'll occasionally post some of her comments--they are definitely pointy-end stuff and some of it is in regards to my swimming style/goals/etc. specifically, but it's next-level stuff, and, for the not-so-fishes, at least interesting reading and things to keep in mind. |

Nice bonus set. Solid workout. Little drill, little pace, little speed. I like throwing in IM sets and have been doing them in masters. It keeps things mixed and helps me from getting bored. It does have an injury prevention advantage too (assuming you are using appropriate technique) since you are mixing it up using different muscle groups rather than only doing freestyle all the time. I find it keeps things balanced. |
