How come every house I like costs $1.6 Million?

I blame my teachers....

Because you're idealistic and have a sense of entitlement. Guess what, hoser, you're not the special unique flower your mommy says you are. NOW HTFU and go get a $200,000 house like the rest of us working schmucks. Edit: That scene if Fight Club about why people our age are angry really hit home.

Heh.... but my mom says I deserve a mansion!

When we first started looking, Steph saw this house in the paper that was 1.1 mil.  They were having an open house.  You never see houses like that with an open house (usually by appt only) so we stopped by.  It was awesome.  Then we went on our way and started looking at places in our price range.  Yeah - everything looked like gaarbage.  We went home.

Aikidoman - 2008-05-29 12:43 PM BTW - what the heck happened over the last week?  I have been only doing the public transit system on my vacation so haven't been tracking gas prices, and I get home last night and gas prices are up 50 cents a gallon?  WTF? - I'm paying more than 4 bucks a gallon now for 91 octane.....  Holy carp.  Maybe time to swith to commuting on the motorcycle.....

Yup, it's pretty bad when it costs me $13.xx to put 3 gallons in my motorcycle.

When I turned 16, I could fill my Accord for $13. Ha.

When I turned 16 I could fill my Jeep for $12, and it had a big tank. I remember when I was that age I would put $5 in my tank and it'd last me a week. Wow. I'm old.

I was going to say the same thing.  I had a conversion van and I could put in $5 and get a quarter of a tank.

But ethanol will save us.

With the son she's had to cook and clean for... I'd say she deserves the mansion.

This will date you....

Who else remembers when $1 a gallon was kind of a "standard" benchmark.  Less was nice, and a couple cents more seemed like prices were going up....

I remember that. I started driving in '99. Gas was .99 for a few months, then started going up. When it got to $1.15 I was so mad...

Yep, As I seem to recall, 1 buck was typical till the early 90's.  Then went up to about $2.  Then there was a strange time when it went back down even though everyone said it was going to keep rising.  That happened in 98/99 I think and it was liek the "good old days" when gas was a buck/gal.

That didn't last long and it has just gone up.  Probably due to hostilities in the middle east and greedy people.  Oh well.

Haha ... well when we were going to buy our first house, a new build cookie cutter, on the day of the closing MRS2Tony called me at work crying saying she didn't want that house. So we pulled our offer and our down payment and waited nearly a year until the house we did buy came available.

And Brian, our houses in Omaha and Chicago were $117,000 and $134,900, respectively, so I's definitely ain't livin' large, muchacho. I just hope they've appreciated since we bought them!

Look at what's different about the two. At the top, the page links are above the "Reply" and "New Thread" buttons. At the bottom, they're on the same line, so the bottom has to wrap more frequently.

Wow I paid $135K for my 500-square-foot condo in Chicago. And it's IN downtown, a couple blocks from Michigan Avenue (all the shopping) and Grant Park (where all the concerts and events are) and six blocks from the lake and near some very nice bars and restaurants and shopping.

You're getting ripped off.

Hey misscullen!

Saw the Canadian Embassy in DC and thought of you.  It's a nice building BTW.  Also, the largest Embassy in DC (maybe the country).  Stopped in and asked if they knew you, no luck.

Unfortunatly, some other country is builing a BIGGER building, so you guys won't have that honor for much longer.....

$450K would buy 1.8 houses in my neighborhood.  But it's all relative right?  Housing markets are different, cost of living is different.  I could sell my house here and buy a phat place in my hometown (in Texas).  But we choose to live in the Pacific NW.

i bought my house about the same time my parents sold the house i grew up in. Their house: Two story brick, 2+ car garage, large parking area, driveway, garden, huge yard with fruit trees and lilacs, fenced yard, full basement with fruit cellar. At one point they were renting out the upstairs, so there were two water heaters, two full kitchens, etc.

The house i bought? Two bedroom box, partially finished full basement, small yard, single car garage that needed work.

i paid for my house what my parents got for theirs. Less than 200 miles separate the two houses. So unfair.

you need to move further south.

450K will buy you 3,200 sq ft on the 10th fairway here (that's how much my neighbor is selling his house for)

Over 3000 sq. feet w/1-1/3 acres is close to that market value for my home.  It will be paid off within 10 years. *knocking on wood*

That is for sure... when we were looking here there were many houses over $250k.... and many under $100k... most of those lower cost ones were double wides or mobile homes, etc.

I spent the first 14 years of my life in a mobile home.  I have nothing against them.  BUT we wanted a real house... a good place to live that would appreciate.  But it was fascinating what the value was perceived to be... in similar houses but with different intangibles.
