Being in better shape allows for more hiking/running/biking on trips and are better able to get to more difficult areas. |

Sometimes I am just looking for a race somewhere but then realize that I can just go explore without it being a race, with my own two feet (or bike) or whatever and really make an adventure of it! I could see something really awesome coming from a ironman type skillset. Like, for example, swimming with one of those dry bags (with shoes and clothes) across a channel of water to an island then trail running/hiking up to the top of a peak or something, swimming back then biking to the local brewery. |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees 2015.3 CLOSED (or Poptarts? Pet pics?) And speaking of adventures the logistics of our PCT run next week are quite overwhelming. There are things that are out of my control that I have to roll with like weather and trail closures, forest fires and whatnot. And then, we just lost on of our support people. It's now a week out and it is so much to ask of someone to hike 8 miles with our crap, take care of us, camp then hike 8 miles out. Oh yeah, and take two days off of work. I'm trying not to stress it but I'm just not sure what I am going to do. We have one person doing this particular support leg but 1. I am not sure if it is too much to ask for her to do it solo (or safe) and two, I am unsure if she can carry all of our stuff. I suppose we could pair down to the bare minimum but still, expecting her to do it solo seems inconsiderate.
Sorry...I'm kind of just venting. |

Like, for example, swimming with one of those dry bags (with shoes and clothes) across a channel of water to an island then trail running/hiking up to the top of a peak or something, swimming back then biking to the local brewery. That does work. Slowtwitch has been putting up articles more recently on things like Otillo and similar which will have 4-5 different swim & run segments. While those are events, one could still get some ideas on how to get through such types of adventures. They carry everything with them and go to some very interesting locations. Those would definitely be more unique adventures, though I was thinking more single activity too. I've had little trouble getting used to hiking some very hilly terrain. Going off the beaten path might take a little getting used to, but very possible. Some hikes have had as much climbing in them as the Pikes Peak Ascent did. Could stay on the roads and ride your bike around everywhere too. Might have to check some gearing for really hilly terrain, but that shouldn't take much. Stop when you need or want to just look around. Mostly it's just the ability to be rather active for long periods of time. |

I plan to put together some sort of running hut to hut adventure at some point. Possibly an established route in Europe or one in Colorado. I know people may have a hard time understanding what kind of contest there is between Europe vs Colorado but ever since I was in Australia a long while back and was chatting with a local about how much the US has to offer, it has really made me want to capitalize on the diversity and convenience of domestic sight seeing. |
