tahrens - 2010-01-06 11:41 AM I know I am a little late on some of my comments, but  I've been off line for a few days so everyone bare with me....

George - I like the idea of learning new strokes. Overall it improves your form  and comfort in the water and makes you a better swimmer. Plus swimming improves core strength so why not diversify the muscles used.

SUZY  IS  RUNNING!!!!

Trina - way to go on the 1300yd swim.. Keep working your breathing drills.  If you have to stop that frequently it sounds like more of a breathing issue than an endurance issue.  Just ask Kim. Make sure you are breathing out completly before you turn your head.  Also evaluate how often you breath, every other stroke, every 3rd, every 4th?  Maybe that will help.   And as for what to wear for the first race, I advise going with tri shorts and a top - not a tri suit.  Get a good pair of shorts and then ride in them a few times.  I quickly learned a proper pair of tri shorts should NOT be painful to ride in.  If the saddle hurts - the shorts are bad.  If you are going to rent a wetsuit I highly recommend this site  f2r.com   (Fit 2 Race).  I rented all my suits from them. It is $45 for a full or sleeveless but you get the suit for 29 days!!  They have outstanding customer service and lots of good sales on their used suits.  The first time I rented from them the suit was brand new!!!  The 29 days is super nice in that it allows time to exchange if the fit isn't right and to get lots of practice in it.  They are also renting race wheels!!!

Michelle - I think all stroller runs should count as 2x the distance!!! Way to go girl.

Jenny - so what did you think of Claire?  I am doing some of the same exercises as you.

Dino - skip the workout and rest.

Just got back from a short jaunt to Reno (played some blackjack and ate at a few buffets!) and cannot fathom going through 10+ pages, are there any cliff notes that someone can provide?

Trina,

Tracy is referring to the fact that it took me almost 3 years of swimming to figure out from my new swim coach Allison (5 weeks ago) that I was not breathing all of the air out, thus not enough air was getting in...that would cause me to start sinking sooner, drop my non breathing arm and basically swim very inefficiently!  wow, that was a mouthful.  I am really good at breathing now as I do an extra forced exhale at the moment my mouth is about to break the surface of the water and my leading (non breathing) arm is just gliding ahead, hanging out, waiting patiently for me to take that stroke!  I just had that as a breakthrough these past 2 weeks practicing and focusing on my breathing.  I used to be already done stroking with my non-breathing arm as I looked down from the breath.  Sadly, I did not realize this was a HUGE waste of energy...it allows for zero glide and that is why I was kicking like a crazy person.  I am actually able to do the EVF (early vertical foream) now, and I am getting the kick to coincide with the breath.

*if only i could do this breathing on both sides!* suzy, that's for you! we are waiting for me to improve my rotation before we start the left (my poor) side breathing   Speaking of rotation, last night at my lesson, she gave me a Finis belt to wear that has a little barrel that rests on the small of your back.  As you swim, you listen to it "Click" each time you rotate to either side.  The goal is to have it click equally and then hopefully more forcefully as you pay attention to it.  I felt like I really had to exaggerate the non breathing side to get it to click much at all.  By the end of the lesson, I was really getting it.  We took the belt off, I swam a few lengths and omg, I was literally moving like a little fish through the water. really cool.  Can't wait to practice this new drill (unfortunately without belt) but I think I am starting to get it!

Hope everyone is doing well, I will be once I get that CT USB cable from Racermate

Ohhhhhhh...a new toy I haven't heard of.  The Finis belt sounds very cool and VERY useful.  Officially called the Finish Tech Toc, I now want one. Had to laugh when I looked them up.  They are $50 bucks.  For those of you looking at all the Tri toys and budgets..$50 is the minimum for ANY tri toys.  It never fails.  Might be able to justify it since hubby is now learning to swim too.     Will first call my contact at the Natatorium to see if the university has one I can play with first.   One can hope.

Suzy, your bike is going to be SCHWEET!!!!  I hope it is everything you want it to be.    Glad your friend is doing better too.

Hope everyone is staying warm this weekend.  Well, back to work.

DougRob - 2010-01-07 9:44 AM I did my LAT test this AM on the treadmill. I can officially say that this is not a fun workout! Running at near max capacity for 30 minutes stinks! I got it done and have my HR number for the the last 20 minutes, run at a continuous 8 mph. (155 AVG HR). Now we'll work out my training zones from that.

Many of my training sessions are indeed fun. This one wasn't I had to play mental games with myself. When I wanted to stop or slow down I imagined I was at  the end of a race and was trying to sprint to the finish line. You know that adreniline boost you get when you are at that point in a race? We'll I was trying to leverage that feeling to get over the rough patches. It only worked a couple of times. I guess I can't fool myself too many times. Anyway I am glad it is done for now. I am sure I will have to repeat it in a couple of months.

Doug

Man I do not know what I would do if my HR was that low!  I must just have a high HR while working out, my first marathon, I ran at nearly 180 bpm the whole thing.  I think I averaged 167 or so this past year.

I do the same type of mind games when doing tempo sets.  The other night I was doing a tempo run on the trainer, and felt pretty strong on the 8th one as I was crossing Kona finish line with Chrissie!

Don't forget I am 48 (soon to be 49 years old). Max heart rate decreases with age.

Glad to hear someone else has a high heart rate.  I regularly hit the 180 while running so I've stopped looking at my heart rate.  I thought it was all the cocaine.  Glad to hear that's not the issue.  Kiss

BTW, Suzy, she is awefully purty.  Now to put some fancy ZIPPS on her you'll be all set!!

Birdy, I thought you rented CARS for a living????  Do I even want to know why there is a tricycle at your office?

So the bike saddle saga continues...  This summer I got a Profile Designs Tri saddle - didn't work out so welll for me....  too much pressure on the man bits that caused some numbness.  Started shopping around and finally come to Adamo.  It looked promising.  I tested one from trisports with no problems (probably should have done a long-ish ride though).  Bought one and  I have ridden on it on the trainer for probably 20 hours now...  horrible saddle soreness.  Works well for short rides of about 30-40 minutes, but then the pain and discomfort start and it gets worse as time wears on.  Took it off and put back on the old bontrager yesterday.  Thoughts or ideas anyone?  I know John rides V-Flow and loves it, but what else is out there that is worth trying?

Have you tried steering away from a tri specific saddle?  I was having somewhat similar problems.  I switched to a road saddle and ALL issue's have gone away.

Keeping with Jeff's positive attitude I've made a decision.   I was suppose to be running the Disney Marathon this Sunday but since I can't I've decided to run 2.6 miles in honor of the 26.2.  Anyone want to join me?  We can have a virtual "mini" marathon in honor of all us gimpy athletes.

I want you to know that this is a BIKE!  2 wheels!! I was rather impressed that I was able to cruise around on it.

Used to rent cars.  Still work for a rental car company, but they don't want me dealing w/ the public anymore so they gave me a company car and told me to drive around!

Not me though - Can't even run for more than 0.24 at a time. Maybe I can do 0.262 mi?? LOL! I suck...but hey, i'm gonna get better. Out of all 3 sports, the run is my limiter! Yay me!!

However, I'm doing a 35 mile bike ride, and when I hit the 26.2 miles, I'll sing a Disney song (me being deaf, I can't even hum the Disney Opening credits thing where Tinkerbell hits the Magic Castle, if I can't hear what it sounds like, how the hell am I supposed to hum it?).

Got a bone, or Stardust's favorite - a Bully Stick, to pick with you guys.

I'm working on scheduling my races, and boy do I have a bit of a dilemma!
IronGirl Triathlon is already set and ready to roll. :-)

There's several more but I'm not sure how to schedule them because I know recovery and taper is important to training. Forgive me for the blah blah chit chatter of this post.

There's two tri's before IronGirl that has shorter bike, shorter swim, but same 5k run.  One is in March, the other is in April. Should I consider doing 1 in March? I can't do April because of ADA Tour de Cure 64 mi ride.

In the fall (there's really no summer Tri in LV) - There's Las Vegas Triathlon, Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, and Pumpkinman Triathlon (Silverman Triathlon is in November - Half and Full..no way I'm doing that!).

The problem is they changed the months, so all three of these are scheduled close together.  Lake Las Vegas Tri and Las Vegas tri are 1 week apart.  I was thinking of doing the first one Sprint, and the second Olympic. Both are taken place in September, and both have Oly and Sprint distances. (My orginial plan was to do both, since one was going to take place in August, or so I thought!).

Pumpkinman is in October (I don't know why I thought it was in November). This kinda is at the same time as RTC Viva Bike Vegas (charity ride - 35 miles, 64 mi, or 118 mi) - one week apart, I hope!

I'm at loss of what to do...is one week between races/events enough time?
Here's what I'm thinking - and feel free to chime in -

Don't do any Tris before IronGirl - April is 64 miles for ADA Tour De Cure ride
Focus on training May-September (5 months! damn), especially in cycling.
September do one Sprint- The one on Sept 11th. (The other is on Sept 26th).
***if possible, do Olympic on Sept 26th)***
October do Sprint PumpkinMan Tri -Oct 23rd.
RTC Viva Bike Vegas - Do 118 miles (this is where the training from May-Sept comes in), however, I have NO idea what day - Taken place in October. Last year, the RTC VBV was taken place one week before Pumpkinman.

---OR---

Same as above, but do the Olympic on September 11th instead of Sprint.
Skip Sept 26th triathlon
Olympic Pumpkinman
Skip RTC Viva Bike Vegas or just do 64 or 35 miles instead.

Thanks for any advice!! I'm sure if I was top notch all of these can be doable, but I just wanted to be sure that I'm not setting myself for a lot of issues.  RTC ride, I don't have to register until much later in the season, plus I don't even know WHEN it will take place. But the others, I want to take advantage of the Early Birds. Looks like i"m gonna have to be a USAT member!!  Hope I'm kind of making sense.

I will have to do this on Saturday and my mini marathon will consistent of 2' walking/2' running X5 plus 5' walking plus 15' on the elliptical assuming no issues between now and then...that'll add up to a little over 3 sorta run miles.  Does that qualify me for Boston?  do I get some sort of medal? Not a stupid question - some bike frames have XS on them (ie Trek), without the CM.  I suspect that you have XS, and probably a 44cm frame because of the 650 wheels. I'm 5' and 48 cm frame, and that's like the tallest I can bear (Top tube is BARELY an inch from my hoo has). The best bet is to wait until the entire bike is built then measure it. :-)  It SHOULD say - FRAME SIZE - **** if not, then oh well.

I would think it STILL counts! :-) You will log it, so it counts! Who cares if you didn't RUN the whole thing.

**ps** I secretly would like to see a Petite Triathlons - Only people 5' 3" or shorter are allowed to Tri. :-)***

Tracy - sorry you're not at Disney, but I'll run the 2.6 on Sunday and I'll probably sing a disney song or two (my daughter is having a Tinkerbell party on Saturday)

Suzi - I am so glad to hear about your friend.  Life sometimes throws some crazy stuff at us!  Not too long ago I was  reminded how precious life is, and I have to say not a single day goes by where I don't hug my family, tell them I love them, and thank God for all of our blessings.

There was a question (to the ladies) about what to wear for a race.  I'm sure it's been commented on - I'm way behind  - but here's my .02.  Try on a gazillion tri suits.  Seriously, a gazillion.  And see what you are most comfortable with.  Every manf and style has a different fit.  I don't like the one piece -  I have a long waist and they just don't fit me - but some swear by them.  I personally love Sugio - that is the only manf I have found that I am very comfortalbe in.  Once you get your tri "outfit" wear it in some training sessions.  I made the mistake last year of buying a new tri suit at the expo before my 1/2 distance.  It felt and looked great in the dressing room.  The next day I was uncomfortable for 6 hours.  Never again will I do that!

Sorry for the rest of the posts I have missed.  I hope to keep up

My name is Mark Nibert and I currently live in Dublin, Ohio. I am 29 years old, married w/ one kid (almost 2). I started training for my first tri-athlon last year and was doing pretty good and felt really motivated until 8/20 when I got hit by a car on my bike. The guy ran through a red light, I had the walk sign etc and needless to say it ended up w/ me in an ambulance. I was pretty luck as the most serious injury was a fractured elbow that is now fully healed. I am back in the gym doing some weight training and I am almost back to where I started.

I am 6'5" and about 275 lbs. I have 50 lbs plus to lose and I am excited to get rid of it. I will admit that sometimes food is hard to pass up but I am getting better. I have been an athlete my whole life and my strong points are sprinting which doesnt help a whole lot here. I have experience with running (played soccer). I have a mountain bike (now trashed) but I am hoping to get a good road bike w/ the settlement from being hit. I really suck at swimming and have tried several of the methods suggested here but I just get really tired really quick. I am hoping to get some advice on the swmming portion of it. I hope to do my first tri-athlon this year.

Thanks again for letting me join up so late!

Welcome Mark....there are plenty of former sucky swimmers in the group and some really good ones too!  You will fit right in.  If you want to get a handle on who we are, scan some of the early pages to get the bios of the members.  If not, hang on tight....we post  lot and have a great deal of fun in addition to just talking about triathlon!

PS. Glad to see you are back at it after the car/bike collision.  I got hit by a bike while running last year so no rehab can take a toll on things.

I know that 12 oz is not much, but curls are still technically working out.  If you are an overachiever, you could go straight to the 40oz curls...  You would probably need to lower reps a bit though...

Good idea, Andy.

Thursday night between 8pm and 12am EST I intend to do somewhere  between 6 to 10 sets of 12 ounce curls.
Picked up some Select 55 for tomorrow night.  It's pretty good in case you're wondering.
Go 'Bama (I don't like the SEC, but I like Texas less).

OK I really need to check. Are you really working out with 12 oz weights? Dude that's like lighter than a small can of soup. Are you sure you don't mean 12 pound weights

I know that 12 oz is not much, but curls are still technically working out.  If you are an overachiever, you could go straight to the 40oz curls...  You would probably need to lower reps a bit though...

Mett - 2010-01-07 1:02 PM My name is Mark Nibert and I currently live in Dublin, Ohio.

Welcome Mark.  Use part of the proceeds from the settlement to get a swim coach.  It will make your triathlon life much easier if you get some hands on help from someone.  As for the running, I too was a sprinter and have to work hard at distance running.  I hurt my MCL (knee) back at the end of October and feel like I am starting all over again.  I am using a "run some everyday" plan for Jan to get myself ramped up a bit.  Not much, but trying to add a couple of minutes everyday.  The other thing I would say is that there is no shame in a run/walk pace (go for a 4:1 or 5;1 ratio at a minimum).  I am still working at my pace and generally end up walking some because I blow myself out...
