I think the foam from the beer helped me float in the pool this morning.

It's certainly not torture at all   It can definitely get tough at times during the class, but I always leave feeling refreshed & amazing.

I actually haven't been in a couple weeks, but I really want to get back asap.  At the moment my training isn't very structured, so it's easier to fit in.  Some days I do just yoga & nothing else, I'm ok with an easy ride on the trainer beforehand or a run in the morning & bikram in the afternoon/evening.  I'd really love to incorporate it into my training plan (once I get started on it) at least twice a week, but it's not exactly low cost.  So, we'll see.

So glad to know I'm not the only one who feels awful in camel pose!  No matter how good I feel I get really dizzy in that pose every time.

Stan...great job on making it through your first class and just staying in the room for the full 90 minutes!!  It does get easier

kcarroll - 2010-02-07 3:26 PM
trying1 - 2010-02-07 8:05 AM I had my first bikram yoga class yesterday and did it ever kick my butt. It was my first time doing yoga overall and I can see why people do it for a great workout. My hr rate was high at times, I even felt a little dizzy during some of the poses. I didn't use my water efficiently, I drank it all during the first 45 min and I was completely soaked. Overall it was a great and tough experience. Kelly how do you incorporate this in your training? right now I can't imagine doing this and a s/b/r on the same day. I would be completely dehydrated..

Will be very interested in what Kelly has to say.  I haven't been to Bikram in a while, but did incorporate it into last year's training.  First of all, CONGRATS on staying in the room and not tossing the cookies.  That is all you should hope for during your first 3 sessions.  And it is totally ok to sit down during a pose if you're struggling.  Just sit on the mat and let your HR come back down. Hard for us Type A's but you'll be rocking the whole series of poses before long. Focus on hydration the day before the class.  The day of is too late.  Your body will eventually adjust and you'll need less water during the class.  I always tried to do Bikram on my swim days.  Swim in the morning and Bikram after work.  It usually wound up being 2 days a week, although I would have liked 3.  And I never got past feeling nauseous during camel pose.

Good luck.

Nice job Stan!  I'm not sure I could handle it - me being not flexible and all.

Kim - I know I sure ate a lot yesterday.  I will confess - Eric and I almost ate a whole king cake yesterday.  I had no choice but to run this morning!

On a side note -  Who dat?  Who dat?  Who dat say gonna beat those Saints?  Go Saints!

Guilty as charged. I hadn't had any alcohol since New Year's day and don't think I'll have another beer until after my half mary. I suffered on the run this morning probably because I was dehydrated or maybe it was the nachos?

I feel like I drank last night...although I did not. Also did pretty good in the eating department...very reasonable considering my mom prepared a great feast. Unfortunately, I got a hint of a migraine at the end of my run yesterday and although it never went full-blown, I'm still dealing with the after effects and it is no fun. If there is a bright side, though, I did call in today and am giving myself a little more down time with hopes I can finally get rid of  the whole thing today (most of the time I have to plan for 3 days of misery when I get a migraine).

Happy Tuesday everyone! Just when I thought winter was gone and done with, 40F w/20+mph winds this AM.  It was quite chilly jumping in the water, took the whole warmup to get warm.  I'm guessing most of our northern folks all have indoor pools that they go to? Anyone else swim outside in the winter?

It was 25 here in Dallas and we have indoor pools. At least that is where I swim at. Looking for snow on Thur should be fun.

Surprisingly, the weather wasn't too intolerable on my run this morning...although when I made the neighborhood loop and turned north, the stiff wind in my face would take my breath away for a split second.

Pool time on tap this afternoon. Fortunately it is an "indoor" facility. It's not necessarily warm and toasty in the facility, but it is protected from the elements at least. Getting in and out are always fun, but at least it's not the outdoor pool I started training in last year. Plus there's always the hot tub option post-swim. Smile

All indoor pools up here.  Lakes are all frozen over, so even if you are crazy enough to want to swim outside you can't.  It will probably be April before I can swim outside w/ a suit.  I guessing it would be hard for me to get motivated to go swim if it was 40!

Happy Tuesday!  I definitely swim indoors but over the weekend my boyfriend wanted to go take pictures... He got a fancy camera over the summer and loves taking pictures and then messing around with them in photoshop.  He's taken some really pretty pictures and I'm usually the camera bag/lens cap holder lol.  Anyway we went out to the lake where I'll be swimming for my tri in May.  I've been a little scared of the thought of an OWS for a while and the first thing I see when we get out there is a sign informing me 200 people have drowned in the lake. How very uplifting!  Then we walk out on a little dock and I realize I really don't like open water at all.  I mean it is really pretty scary to me... so once Clemson gets some nicer weather I have a fear to conquer!

I'm in the same boat here.  Indoor pools only.  I'm hoping to get in the lake by mid-April.  It'll still be quite chilly...mid to maybe high 50's.  But I want to at least mentelly prepare myself for the Mooseman swim, which will be about the water temp.

If I can do it - anyone can do it!  I'm certain you will be fine.  In May - will the water be wetsuit legal?

Cool about the bf's hobby.  I always admired people who can see a potential shot in everything!

I've been swimming indoors, but I can't wait to go for an OWS. I also just learned that the road to Lake 288 has been repaved so my bike rides to swim will be much more enjoyable. Looks like it's time for some intervals on some nice new asphalt.

I have to retire my favorite swimsuit today  It has finally seen it's last swim.  It's a sad sad day.  It's my go to suit when I feel like I'm having a fat day (even though the scale is the same ol' same ol').  We have been together for years and years.  Salt water is not near as rough on a swimsuit as chlorine.

For an even more fun swim workout, turn it in to a drag suit...then you never have to say goodbye.

Great suggestion! We used to do this for swimming, put some holes in the suit and wear it on top of your normal suit for some extra drag

I remember the high school team doing that on "drag days" the boys team would wear old stretched out womens speedos over their suits. Great memories.
