Had a great weekend of training, probably had my best run ever yesterday.  Really felt great.

Question for the group.  I have 5 weeks left to my HIM.  Not really following a plan, but it's been 2 week builds/1 week cutbacks, more or less.  If I build again this week, then cutback, that leaves me 3 weeks to the HIM.  one more 2 week build into taper?  Or one final week build, two week taper?  The latter sounds like a lot of taper for a HIM for me.

Thoughts on how to structure the last 5 weeks?

Chris, With your sporadic training taking 2 weeks taper maybe ok. Extra rest before a race is never a bad idea.

maybe I have a different understanding of the word sporadic?

My big worry is staying uninjured (knock wood).  If I do, that will be only the second season went into a big race without injury.  I always thought it went along with the territory

My Bad Chris.  I though your work schedule and travels made your train inconsistent.  I guess I should check logs before I open my big mouth.  Sorry no offence.

When you say “staying uninjured” is that post race?

Several years ago on my first HIM back to racing I pushed too hard in the race.  I ended up with a bad back spasm for the training I did for the race.  Not so much the endurance part but the speed part.

Today is a HTFU day, so would rather go back to bed instead of head to the pool.  Been tired this week, crazy busy at work.  Then I have a 20 min TT on the bike this afternoon.  That should be interesting to see if I can pace it right so I finish strong instead of limping along at the end.

What does everyone else have on tap?

This morning on the bike I did 6x4' intervals at 105%FTP with 45" rest.  I was able to hit about 5 watts higher for each interval from the last time I did these so really happy about that.  The last one I was able to push about 10 watts higher than the previous 5 so it may be time to up the FTP a bit.  I forecast great pain the next time .  Planning a swim later.

Chris:  If you are prone to injury maybe start tapering your run 10 days or so out and then bike/swim 5-7 days out.  Just a thought.

James:  Nice swim workout yesterday.  Always good to get one like that behind you.

Yay!!!  I got in the pool!!!  And actually had a nice workout!!

i modified my swim stroke a bit, shortened it up, made a pretty decent difference, but my turnover is a bit quicker.  Need to keep consistent in the pool, it is free time for me in a race.

Good morning!  So, it's snowing big wet flakes of snow today.

Last night i did a rather short HR test on the bike for which I can't upload the data yet because i am having some computer issues.

DH want do a run test tonight but they are calling for freezing rain this afternoon so i am not sure that it will happen.  I am flexible.  Would like to run and swim but will settle for either.

What i really have to do is call the university rec centre that's across from my work and find out about their masters swim group which would fit into the training plan very well.  They are in the middle of a session but i am hoping we can check it out and join up if we like.

Have a nice TT ride.    I see you already got a swim in so that should be a good day of training.

I have a 1:45 CT ride.

TSimone - 2012-02-29 7:39 AM I didn't feel like swimming yesterday so I swapped my Wednesday bike/run with my Tuesday swim/run. So today I pay the piper. Swim and a 45 min run this evening. Happy training folks. Gotta admit, I'm a bit jealous thinking about Fred motoring through the World Showcase sampling beer from all those different countries. Well, that's what I normally do Epcot...

Get it done you'll be happier after

Supper job on those intervals!

The bike is something I need the most work now.  I am sure it will come together.

Great news on you getting in the pool.  Congrats on improving your stroke.

Is that something you figured out or just tried?

i read Yanti and Adventure Bears post on swim technique, thought i would try something new.  My stroke was a bit faster, but i liked the feeling in the water, and i did not sink as much when i breathed on the right side.

i train on 3-5 strokes per breath, but race on 2.  I tend to pull hard left, so I am trying to balance out the stroke by breathing bilaterally.  I can do it, but i tend to sink a bit when i look right to breath.

Oh, no worries, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something

Staying uninjured is pre race.  Seems every year I have one issue or another that stunts my training.  Usually the run

3300 yds/6.5 mile run last night

4 x 10' at about 95-100% this morning.  Legs were pretty dead, but tonight I get to relax

Hey all,

Looks like I'm going to be posting a bit less for the next couple of weeks as things have become manic at work! However, managed to get a nice long 8.8mile run in this evening bringing Feb's totals to:

Bike:10h 28m  - 227.08 Mi
Run:14h 05m  - 92.27 Mi
Swim:4h 19m 37s  - 13000 M

Considering I was ill for 3 days and missed out on about 10miles of running, I'm pretty happy with thoses numbers. How was everyone else's month?

I am really bummed out about my knee_ is really hurting and I am to the point that it hurts when I walk. I called and made an appointment with the doctor for Monday. Last night I got off the trainer after 45 minutes once I felt a twinge in the knee, I decided to quit at that point. I guess to many miles, to soon, to early!

Good call on making the dr's appointment.  Hopefully it is something you can recover from quickly.  Does it hurt to swim?

Finished my TT.  I've not done one in quite some time.  I avg'd 20.1 mph for the 20 mins, most of that into a head wind.  Too bad I couldn't avg that for say 58 miles and then go run well after.   I am pretty happy with that though.  I felt I was slower, just slogging into the wind and just concentrated on keeping the HR up (in other words effort).

little disappointed in my run volume but all in all ok with the month.  Bike and swim are up from Jan but that was easy given that I was on vacation and had no bike for a week and the pool was closed for 2 weeks in Jan.  Run is down.

February's totals:
Bike:21h 09m 46s  - 327.15 Mi
Run:14h 02m 45s  - 74.82 Mi
Swim:12h 39m 46s  - 29350 Yd
Strength:

2h 05m

Goals for March are just to execute the training.  Volume should be great for two weeks then it'll drop due to taper.  Just want to make it to race day well trained and uninjured.

Take care of that knee and as Kim said good call to get to the doctor.  Question did this happen before or after your bike fit?

Good job on the months training!

It’s important to be happy with what you do.

Epcot in the afternoon is the best.  Cause it does not make as much sense to drink all that beer so early in the day.  Doable, but not the best plan of action.

The shoe thing makes sense Fred.  One of my friends was having trouble with his achiles and after a bit of research he figured out his new shoes where higher up on the ankle then his last pair and so he loosened up the laces and felt immediate relief.  He's off to find a new pair of shoes to run in.  He always ran in the same model but they changed up the shoe.

I'm not going anywhere as long as you continue to keep us Fred.    Your right, this is a good group.  Lots of knowledge and encouragement and just the right amount of HTFU statements.
